Tyler, The Creator: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Content advisory: The video above may contain language that is offensive to some.

Dec. 11, 2017 | Sidney Madden — Tyler, The Creator’s Tiny Desk performance was a first for many reasons. It was the Los Angeles rapper’s first time performing at our offices, but moreover, it was the Tiny Desk’s first nighttime performance, a special request from Tyler and his team in order to professionally light the “stage” themselves. Members of Tyler’s lighting crew came to the office a day before to set it up, eventually bathing him and his band in shades of fuchsia, orange and blue — one for each song — during the early evening show.

Flower Boy, Tyler’s latest album, is much like this Tiny Desk performance; a surprising departure from the expected. Four albums in, he has matured as a producer, rapper and human being. Often equated to hip-hop’s class clown, the 26-year-old peels back his own mask of immaturity to reveal a young adult grappling with anxiety, fear and uncertainty of self.

After he was done, Tyler did something of a modified mic-drop, throwing his tambourine in celebration of what he and his band had accomplished. Always one to stay casually connected with his fans, Tyler made time — nearly an hour after the performance was done —- to pose for photos, sign merch and crack jokes with (and on) everyone around him.

Are you planning for FMX yet?

fmx2018

I first heard about FMX in 2011, just as I started writing full-time about visual effects. I went there – it’s in Stuttgart – and was immediately hooked. There’s a ton of super-cool visual effects, animation and CG presentations.

You could go to JUST THOSE all week if you wanted to. But why the conference is even better is the breadth of other things going on: recruitment, AR/VR/tech demos, in-depth software/hardware talks, screenings – and maybe the best thing: people. I’ve made a whole bunch of friends there who I probably see only once a year. And you get to meet a lot of industry members and artists. It’s worth it just for that.

Six-odd years later, I’m now on the Program Board for FMX, and I’ll be running a track at the conference in April 2018 called ‘Then & Now.’ I’ll talk more about what this will ultimately involve soon, but the first announced speaker in that track is the amazing Phil Tippett. That might give you a bit of insight into what Then & Now is all about.

Tippett_StarshipTroopers

Things start at FMX on April 24, 2018, which is definitely not very far away in terms of planning ahead. Find out more about some of the announced sessions in this press release, and keep an eye on fmx.de for more announcements.

Hope to see you there!

Mosta signs deals with India, China, Japan for ‘BoBoiBoy’

Malaysia’s animation content developer Monsta, famously known for the hit animated 3D series, BoBoiBoy, announced its new international partnerships in China and India, at the studio’s press conference, which took place with the support of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Web TV Asia.

According to an exclusive acquisition deal, China’s Tencent Video, the dominant video streaming platform, will bring BoBoiBoy into the China market with WebTVAsia as BoBoiBoy’s distribution and localisation partner. All three seasons of the TV series and the feature film BoBoiBoy The Movie will be fully dubbed into mainland Mandarin language. The acquisition deal is worth seven figures in renminbi (RMB).

WebTVAsia group CEO Fred Chong said, “It is a major breakthrough for a top Malaysian animation IP to enter China, one of the world’s biggest markets with a highly popular video platform like Tencent. As a Malaysian company ourselves, we are proud to bridge this connection and look forward to a successful partnership in years to come.”

Monsta also announced its acquisition deal with Disney Channel India to broadcast the BoBoiBoy series and movie in four languages – Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and English – to the whole Indian sub-continent along with Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Seychelles and Sri Lanka.

BoBoiBoy’s Tencent deal

Monsta CEO Nizam Razak said, “It has always been our dream to export not only our content but also our Malaysian culture to the world. Now this dream is a reality as millions of viewers from across the world are enjoying our animated shows with our Malaysian identity.”

Furthermore, Monsta acquired a merchandising deal with Japan’s Takara Tomy to produce the BoBoiBoy Galaxy TOMICA toy series which was released to the Malaysian market this year, and also partnered with Gameloft to produce BoBoiBoy Galaxy Run, a mobile game on both Android and iOS.

With the release of BoBoiBoy in China and India, Monsta hopes that the brand will become more popular with kids internationally and open up new opportunities for the Malaysian animation industry.

Disney may acquire minority ownership of BOOM! Studios from Fox deal

The news about Disney acquiring Twenty-First Century Fox, continues to remain the top story around the world. The announcement revealed that the deal for Fox assets is $52.4 billion in stock. We are all aware of the various assets that Disney will own soon, which will also include entertainment properties like X-Men, Avatar, Fantastic Four, Deadpool, The Simpsons, FX Networks and National Geographic.

But that’s not the only thing that seems to be happening in this deal. On 15 June 2017, Fox announced a strategic investment in acquiring a significant minority stakes with BOOM! Studios.  Though Boom! may not have the same market share as Marvel, it does have plenty of original content which can be further improved in the coming years.

Boom! Studios, famously know as the publisher for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic book series is another asset that will give Disney an edge. If Disney chooses to merge them with Marvel, it may be a possibility but it’s still too early to know.  The studio also had a first-look deal with Twentieth Century fox for television rights since 2014. Currently it’s not confirmed whether the takeover also includes Boom! Studios.

BOOM! VP of marketing Arune Singh is not worried about the merge as he hopes that things will remain the same in their day-to-day operations. The company has worked with Disney in the past before it took over Marvel by licensing several of its properties.  Therefore, he confirmed that they are very calm about the whole deal.

Localisation takes center stage in Dhaka-based Mindfisher Games’ upcoming title

“Excellent localisation of the content!” was the initial thought that crossed my mind when I saw Mukti Camp at NGDC this year.

Just like its previous edition, this year’s NGDC also brought together a varied set of game developers and enthusiasts alike. Mindfisher Games, a Dhaka, Bangaladesh based studio also made their debut at India’s largest game dev conference.

A quick dekko at their website gave me the little idea of the kind of games they have in the past, or are currently creating. “We make midcore and casual mobile games for South Asia. We have more than five million downloads and five Apple features! Based in Dhaka, Bangladesh- we are a team of 27! Now (we’re) making Mukti Camp a sequel to our popular Heroes of 71 Series!” The game is set in the backdrop of Bangaladesh’s liberation war of 1971 and is inspired by mobile games somewhat like Clash of Clans.

Zamilur Rashid

Speaking to AnimationXpress, Mindfisher Games CEO Zamilur Rashid stated, “It was a great experience as it was the first time in NGDC for us, all the way from Dhaka, Bangladesh. We have had more than 200 visits at our stall in the three days of the event. We had received appreciations from industry experts and even 15 to 20 key persons.”

The studio’s site also reads, “We are the first Game Studio in Bangladesh to raise foreign direct investment (FDI). We have raised $235,000, to develop Mukti Camp. We have merged Gameover Studio; five times Apple featured studio, to ensure we have the brightest talents of Bangladesh.”

Now the new team of 28 is apparently working relentlessly to make sure the initial version of Mukti Camp launches on 16 December 2017. Subsequently, they plan to release the next version on 26 March 2018.

Says Rashid, “We have heard about NGDC since two years. We wanted to attend it last year as well, but could not because of visa issues. This year we made it an agenda to come, hence had prepared for it since the last two months prior to the event.”

He further mentioned, “Firstly, Bangladesh game dev scene is just coming up. There are only a handful of good studios, so we wanted to check if the games we make are good enough in other markets. It seems we have passed that hurdle with a positive response at this year’s NGDC. We even plan to repackage the game for other regions and hence were looking at partners from India, including studios which can help us with the artwork.”

Concluding his thoughts with a take on the Indian gaming scene, the studio head said, “The whole Indian scenario is much more mature than Bangladesh and much more optimistic. In Bangladesh we have raw talents and programmers but the industry is yet to mature and spread. We plan to visit NGDC next year as well.”

Korea's humanoid robot 'HUBO' joins PyeongChang Olympic torch relay

올림픽 성화봉송, ICT 구간 시작, ‘휴보’도 주자로 뛴다

With less than 2 months to the start of the Pyeongchang games… the olympic torch relay continues despite the subzero temperatures.
One of the latest runner to carry to flame fears no cold even being out there in his birthday suit.
It’s none other than Hubo the robot from Korea’s science and technology university.
Lee Ji-won files this report from Daejeon.
From Jeju’s haenyeo, or women divers, to Korea’s legendary warship, the Turtle Ship,… the Olympic torch has been carried around the country by some unique means.
And in Daejeon, robots joined the relay.
On the 41st day of the Olympic Torch Relay, the humanoid robot HUBO and a team of robotics scientists kicked off the third theme of the torch relay, Information Technology, at the country’s technology research hub, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in the western city of Daejeon on Monday.
HUBO won the DARPA Robotics Challenge in 2015, and during Monday’s relay, it re-enacted one of its award winning moves.
Demonstrating its ability to use tools,… the robot broke through a wall and handed over the Olympic flame to its developer Professor Oh Jun-ho.
