LIGHTS – 光

“A new born light enters the world, but slowly begins to adapt, to fit in, conditioned by expectations, until the light fades away slowly and it’s too late to turn back to it’s true self.” Lights is a simple metaphor that visually examines all those feelings, dreams and possibilities that we unconsciously let go of during our life as we slowly adapt to what surrounds us. Step by step we leave behind our true selves, something that slowly fades away in the background, like a shadow we only half remember.  When our time comes to move on, if we finally look back to what could have been, we may think “what if…” Direction & Design: Alessandro Novelli. THE VISIONARIES: Dustin O'Halloran Part 1

Dustin O’Halloran is one of the best composers in the world. He won an Emmy for the theme tune he created for Amazon’s TV series ‘Transparent’. He has composed the soundtracks for films including Sophia Coppola’s ‘Marie Antoinette’, Drake Doremus’ ‘Breathe In’, ‘Like Crazy’ and ‘Equals’. In 2016, with his friend Hauschka, he was nominated for an Oscar and BAFTA (Best Original Score) for the soundtrack to ‘Lion’.
I filmed Dustin during rehearsal before a special, one-off show at the Barbican in London where he performed with his music ensemble A Winged Victory for the Sullen. The following night, my producer Sinead and I drove to Manchester and back to film them playing their last show of the run at St. Philip’s Church. Part 2 will be coming soon.

Mumbai Comic Con 2017 second day brings alive the crazy comic world

Day two of Mumbai Com Con 2017

Mumbai Comic Con 2017 had a marvelous start on its second day, where streams of fans rushed to the event around 30 to 40 minutes before the gates opened. It was indeed a place of wonder and dreams for comic lovers that comes only once in a year. The volunteers greeted everyone on the entrance with fist bumps and high fives and with a lot of enthusiasm.

Passing on the torch from day one of the Comic Con, day two brought along more surprises and more guest speakers. Animation Xpress team attended the event to share the experiences, sights and sounds of the beautifully decorated hall and a little about the speakers that attended the event.

Sumit kumar and the cartoonist conundrum

Bakarmax founder and owner Sumit kumar spoke about his webcomics Bakarmax where he introduces a new topic every week. All of his comic strips can be found on his website; these are humorous and hence does not focus on superheroes at all. Bakarmax has more Indian oriented type comedy on day to day topics  that can be easily accepted by the public, like State Bank of Comics, Daalman and many more.

Amar Chitra Katha:

There was a live stage session where the Amar Chitra Katha(ACK)  team came and spoke about their 50 glorious years. Editor Reena Puri, art director Savio Mascarenhas, Amar Chitra Katha editor-in-chief Rajani Thindiath were present from the team. They had a trivia session based on their comics where the winners received new ACK issues.

ACK editor-in-chief Rajani Thindiath said, “We have introduced several new characters. We want to ensure that there are as many female characters along with male characters.” The team also discussed about their comic series  Mahabharata as they have already finished the Valmiki’s Ramayana.

Thindiath praised  the female teenage superhero Wingstar that has become a hit. The success of this 13 year old girl whose real name is Mapui is going really strong. She fights against crime but also has homework and prefers to be a regular girl than a superhero.

Savio spoke about the influence he received from the late Anant Pai, fondly called Uncle Pai who is the founder of Amar Chitra Katha. He also explained his work on the Ramayana comic series which was his greatest achievement. Pai reached out to audiences by asking them questions related to the comic genre which Savio found to be very profound. The ACK team also gave a small introduction about how Tinkle was established as well.

AXN India:

AXN had an interactive session on stage where they quizzed the crowd about their popular shows like Sherlock, Viking, Breaking Bad and gifted prizes to fans. In 2016, the brand repositioned itself with the tag line LIVE R.E.D. It’s meant to give a view to the audience about the range of shows AXN has to offer. The new logo and packaging spells out the colour red for this tagline. This new presentation by the channel has helped increase their viewership.

East India Comedy:

There was a huge crowd for East India Comedy co-founder Sahil Shah who entertained the audience with hilarious jokes and his self created sound effects.
Transformers comic book artist Andrew Griffith:

Transformers comic book artist Andrew Griffith:

Comic book artist Andrew Griffith who has designed the Transformers comic book series

was on stage for the next session. He was in Mumbai for the first time and showed his disappointment about the character Bumblebee from Transformers being able to talk these days. Andrew gave some tips to the comic writers as well. He said, “ For a character to be interesting, it should have something original in it, have multiple dimensions and should look modern and confident.”

A session with ‘The Awkward Yeti’ founder Nick Seluk

It was an interesting sight to see two comic founders on stage, one interviewing the other!

Brown Paperbag creator Shailesh Gopalan questioned The Awkward Yeti founder Nick Seluk about his work and more.He revealed about his inspiration for the “Blue Yeti” character saying, “the Yeti is simply an exaggeration of my own personality. I choose it as it funny and cool. I  like to observe people and I spend hours researching the way people speak.”

His ideas have a very organic thought that backs it up, added Nick Seluk. He used to work as a graphic designer in corporate for ten years but was dissatisfied. He wanted to start something of his own, so he left his job and started working on his very own comic book.

“ That idea stayed with me for six months and finally I began writing at a coffee shop. The moment I wrote, it immediately lifted my heart.” Gopalan mentioned that just like Seluk, he derived his ideas by observing his surroundings. For creating comics, he usually does a rough sketch of it and then converts them digitally using Photoshop. Seluk also admitted using Photoshop to make his work look visually attractive since his drawings are sloppy in the rough sketches.

Be YouNick Session:

Be YouNick Team

The next session was with the popular youtubers “Be YouNick” team known for their funny videos had come for the first time to Comic Con. Be YouNick CEO Nikunj Lotia  introduced the rest of his team and gave a background of how the team formed. Lotia discussed about some of the videos they have on YouTube like the Parody of Escobar which was a hit.

Pro-cosplayer Nicole Marie Jean and Michael

Pro-cosplayer Nicole Marie Jean and Michael

Pro-cosplayers Nicole Marie Jean in a black and white costume and Michael in Sandman’s attire arrived on stage for the next session; Jean said “It’s fun creating costumes rather  than buying them. I have created 150 different costumes in eight years. It takes a lot of efforts but it’s a learning experience and I have slowly evolved into creating more advanced costumes.” This was the second day of Mumbai Comic Con 2017 in a nutshell!

Even while the day started to conclude, the Comic Con hall was still lit up with all kinds of merchandises based on characters from Minions, Batman, Frozen, Starwars, Game of Thrones  like ties, cups, notebooks, figurines, masks, USB drives, notebooks and the list goes on. Batman was one of the most sold out among them due to its huge fan following. Not to forget the cosplayers dressed up in characters like Nightwing, Spiderman, Batman, Ironman, Lara Croft, Thor, Joker, Black Widow who made the Mumbai Con alive till the end.  We will wait for the next year’s Comic Con with the same eagerness as you guys!

‘Rampage’ trailer: Yet another simian-inflicted cataclysm loaded with CG and VFX

After King Kong, Kong: Skull Island, and Planet of the Apes series, Hollywood’s obsession with apes is all set to turn over a new chapter as Warner Bros. launch the trailer of their upcoming sci-fi thriller Rampage.

Starring Dwayne Johnson in the titular role, the movie treads similar lines of Peter Jackson’s 2005 sleeper hit King Kong, if the trailer is anything to go by.

The clip begins with the Fast and Furious star along with his allies embarking on a jungle safari when they bump into a giant albino silverback gorilla emerging out of the dense bushes, which has a striking resemblance to the Solovar character of The Flash TV series.

A failed genetic experiment turns the gorilla into a humongous, raging creature that runs amok through the country, smashing everything on the way to smithereens. Johnson and his team are now tasked with finding an anecdote to stop the catastrophe and also save his friend’s life.

The visual effects, done by Hydraulx and Weta Digital, are eye-catching if not totally awe-inspiring. The destruction scenes are as grandiose as one may see in any other Hollywood movie, and has director Brad Preyton (San Andreas fame) written all over it. And not to mention the ginormous aquatic creature, supposedly a croc, that peers through the ground and adds to the terror, that is so evident on Johnson’ face at the sight of it.

A Warner Bros. Pictures distribution, Rampage is a New Line Cinema production and is set to run riot in cinemas from 20 April 2018 onwards.

ABAI signs MoU with Game Developers’ Association of Australia to encourage India-Australia gaming corridor

The AVGC B2B Summit at Bengaluru concluded its first edition with the complete list of dignitaries on stage. While ABAI president Biren Ghose addressed the attendees, he shared a development with the audience right before departure.

ABAI signed a MoU (memorandum of understanding) with the Game Developers’ Association of Australia (GDAA) which aims at building a corridor between the Australian and Indian game development communities. The agreement was signed between ABAI president Biren Ghose and GDAA CEO Tony Reed.

The MoU aims at bringing the communities closer by looking into exchange programs, co-production and co-development opportunities. According to it, ABAI will also be looking for knowledge and tips from GDAA on creating a gaming event like the famous The Arcade, in Australia.

Tony Reed and Biren Ghose

In turn, ABAI will be connecting with knowledge about initiatives of its own, like the proposed Center of Excellence.

Both the parties will also be connecting on a government level, on a state basis.

Apart from Reed, two other Australian developers, League of Geeks co-founder and director Blake Mizzi and Mighty Serious CEO Al Gibb, were also present at the event.

Looks like ABAI would be looking forward to organise a stand-alone gaming event like The Arcade sometime in the future.

Bengaluru AVGC B2B Summit concludes its first edition with prospects of a bigger and better next one!

After two days of sessions, pitches and networking, the Bengaluru B2B AVGC Summit called the curtains on this year’s edition with a promise to return bigger and better.

The second day of the event at ITC Windsor Manor showed the same intensity from the buyers and sellers, just like day one. With consistent number of pitches from indigenous participants throughout the day, the buyers seem to be content as well.

So much so, that Jetpack Distribution’s Dominic Gardiner, during his session titled New Paradigms of Distribution announced that he plans to take with him at least two shows from India this time. During his session, Gardiner spoke about the distribution process with the five steps- publicity, pitch, contract, deliver and collect. According to him, to find a good distributor, you must look into a number of factors including, their catalogue compatibility with your offerings, asking for projections, terms of business and most importantly, looking for a good track record from the potential distributor. Concluding his sessions on the thoughts of what has changed and what has not in the field of distribution, he explained that even though the technology has changed giving entry to new buyers, screens and marketing tactics, what haven’t changed are the basics, like face to face business, B2B markets and legal contracts, to name a few.

Talking about the event, Turner’s Zia Bales said this was her first time in India and she felt extremely welcomed and enjoyed the pitches, while League of Geeks’ Blake Mizzi said he would definitely like to hear more stories from the Indian creators.

Technicolor’s Alison Warner, during her session, delved into a case study of the show, The Deep, which aired in 130 territories over various networks. She explained how they built a 360 degree brand around it and even though the show was aimed at kids, the parents loved it too, fetching the show an informal title of a family program. From video games to themed sections at water parks and toys, they have tried to maximise the brand presence for visibility.

An interesting talk by Mighty Serious’ Al Gibb started with his appreciation for the hosting country and the organisers. Going into the topic, the Australia-based developer explained the kind of games they make and what can be done further. He stressed on the point that no matter which government comes into power, they should always support the industry going further. Talking about their upcoming project to combat homophobia, in association with the state of Victoria, Australia, the CEO explained how they are working with behavioural researchers and universities to create a program, rather a game, to help people make better decisions on the topic.

Speaking to some of the sellers during lunch gave us the idea that even though not all their pitches were successful, they got valuable feedback and learnt a lot from the buyers, who were experienced in their respective fields.

A session moderated by Biren Ghose brought together some of the foreign delegates in an attempt to provide attendees with tips and tricks to pitch better. Suggestions included checking the shows that a broadcaster airs to get an idea if your offering fits in the scene and being relaxed and making a conversation, not just a robotic pitch. While the delegates engaged in some fun demo pitching sessions, all the attendees including the buyers and the sellers converged in the hall for the final leg of the show.

All the buyers were called upon the stage to share their feedback on the event, to which one statement resonated from everyone: “The event was very well organised.” Thanking ABAI for their initiatives, the buyers praised the content that they had seen in the past two days and seemed enthusiastic to return again.

Srinivas Bindiganavale

With that, Biren Ghose took to lead to share the road for ABAI, going forward. He said, going forward in 2017, they would be looking forward to local and international engagement and would further attempt to take digital into the more rural areas. The ABAI president also announced that the ministry has given a greenlight for the continuation for the B2B event, so you can expect another edition, officially.

Also mentioning that they have had feedbacks about the market not being for production houses and studios, they promised to segregate the market and bring about opportunities for the aforementioned parties as well. Going by Ghose’s words Bengaluru GAFX will likely see mentoring sessions for pitches as well.

With the buyers and sellers thanking each other, it was time for curtain call. The MoU was signed between ABAI and Game Developers’ Association of Australia (GDAA) to promote India-Australia gaming corridor and was received with much applause. Thus, the two day event had come to a fruitful end showing prospect of a better next edition.

Sharing parting thoughts, the event’s organiser Srinivas Bindiganavale expressed, “The response to this pioneering event was phenomenal. We would like to express our appreciation for the whole-hearted participation from both the buyers and sellers in this Summit. The Summit was an overwhelming success with over 450 sessions, 120 plus sellers and 20 plus distinguished buyers from all over the world providing great knowledge, feedback and encouragement; and the social interactions with our community of creators and producers was as valuable. We look forward to creating more such platforms often to fuel growth to the original content IP creators of our country.”
