Forza Motorsport 4 (Xbox 360 Gameplay)

Forza Motorsport 4 is a racing simulation game developed by Turn 10 Studios and published by Microsoft Studios for the Xbox 360. It is the fourth installment in the Forza Motorsport series, and was released in North America on October 11, 2011 and in Europe on October 14, 2011. It is the first title in the series to support the Kinect sensor alongside the traditional controller-based gameplay.

New to the series is the Autovista mode, a mode in which players can view precise details such as engine parts and interior gauges on a select number of cars. It features a partnership with BBC’s Top Gear as well as its American counterpart. Jeremy Clarkson, presenter for Top Gear, provides commentary in the game’s Autovista mode. Other partnerships include a two year agreement with the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). Over 500 cars and 26 tracks are included.

The game received universal acclaim from critics. Aggregate websites GameRankings and Metacritic report scores of 90.50% and 91 out of 100, respectively. Metacritic also reports eight perfect scores from various media outlets. Critics praised the enhanced vehicle physics, updated visuals, and strong sound design. Several reviewers also gave high marks for the Forza 4’s Autovista mode. Some critics expressed frustration with Kinect features, and others also felt that the game was not enough of an innovation from its predecessor, Forza Motorsport 3. These critics did, however, concede that the game was a vast improvement over Forza 3.

Forza Motorsport 4 is racing video game, and the fourth in the Forza Motorsport series. Like Sony’s Gran Turismo franchise, Forza games are racing simulations; heavy emphasis is placed on making the cars drive and look as realistic as possible. Races are conducted on closed circuit tracks. 500 cars are featured in the core game experience, ranging from everyday cars to race cars.

Players can utilize Kinect to look into a corner using a new head tracking feature. This allows them to look toward the apex of a corner or at nearby cars. The controller or steering wheel is used to control the car while Kinect is used independently for viewing around the driver. Players can also use Kinect as a game controller. In this setting the game automatically accelerates and decelerates the player’s vehicle utilizing a modified version of the feature known as Auto Brake in Forza Motorsport 3. The steering is controlled by placing the players arms out as if controlling an invisible steering wheel. Kinect will allow the player to use voice commands to start races and navigate menus.

New to the Forza series is a feature known as Autovista. It is designed to allow players to walk around and explore inside cars. This feature allows players to view minute details such as brake pads, engine components, and interior details. The player can point at certain features, such as headlights, wheels and the engine for further information about them via audio recording. It can be controlled via Kinect or a game controller. Only 24 cars in the game support the Autovista feature, as it is primarily for sports cars, classic cars, and dream cars. The graphics used to create these cars are formed using image-based lighting which allowed the developers to create perfect reflections, and would better immerse the car in the environment both when racing on a track or in the garage or Top Gear studio when viewing a car.

As in Forza 3 there is a career mode for players to complete, which sees players racing at multiple locations around the world. This is known as World Tour Mode in Forza 4, previously known as Season Play in Forza 3. However, one new feature that appears in Forza 4 is the game’s ability to adapt the difficulty as the player progresses through the career, and collect a trend of data to see how well they perform. This allows AI drivers to change and upgrade their cars automatically to suit the player’s driving abilities. There are several types of races besides the standard format. Forza 4 includes the original bumper-to-bumper races, but also has drift, autocross, and multiple-heat races. Unlike in Forza 3 where players had no choice over which car they received after leveling up, in Forza 4 players are now able to choose one out of several cars as a prize, which are automatically upgraded to the high end of their class. Players are able to import their Forza Motorsport 3 profiles into Forza Motorsport 4. This gives them the ability to transfer a certain amount of in-game credits and gifted cars into their new garage. The amount allowed transferred is based on how long they have played the game and how many cars and credits they have. Players have the option to create car clubs and share cars in their garages within that club. Previous games in the series were limited to eight cars on the track, however Forza 4 supports 16 player racing online, and two players offline.

Mercury Filmworks expands management team and promotes key executives

With media partners like Disney, Netflix and Amazon clamoring for more content and with over 10 projects in the delivery pipeline along with the newly created Lighthouse Studios, Mercury Filmworks, one of Canada’s most prolific independent animation studios, is expanding its management team, promoting several key executives and hiring new staff.  The announcement was made today by Mercury Filmworks CEO Clint Eland.

“We are very grateful that our media partners continue to see Mercury Filmworks as a provider of top-tier animation content.” explains Eland. “Over the past year our company has been able to increase its development and production committments, creating a robust pipeline that requires a deeper bench of both creative and business executives to support it. To ensure our projects continue to surpass expectations and maintain Mercury Filmworks’ leadership position, we are expanding our management team.”

A rich but carefully curated production slate, which includes five original series in various stages of development, will carry Mercury Filmworks through 2018. Additionally, the company is currently collaborating with partners on a slate of animated projects, including four series with long-time partner Disney Television Animation; two high-profile series for Amazon Studios; a highly-anticipated series with Silvergate Media for Netflix; and a number of special projects with Marvel.

Mercury Filmworks’ expansion started earlier this year when the company joined forces with Academy Award nominated animation studio Cartoon Saloon to create Lighthouse Studios—a 2D focused animation studio located in Kilkenny, Ireland that operates independently from Cartoon Saloon and Mercury Filmworks, but works in collaboration with both companies.

To support its continuing growth, Mercury Filmworks reorganises its leadership team with a series of promotions and hires effective immediately:

Current Vice Presidents Sandra Green and Nicole St. Pierre are promoted to Senior Vice President, Finance and Senior Vice President, Business & Legal, respectively. Both will continue to report directly to Eland and oversee the legal, business and finance operations of the growing company, as well as supporting operations for Lighthouse Studios.  Green has been with Mercury Filmworks since 2004 and played a key role in creating a stable company with strong financial performance, and prior to Mercury Filmworks in 2007, St. Pierre worked as an independent entertainment lawyer and producer.

Jefferson Allen

Mercury Filmwork’s head of studio Jefferson Allen, charged with overseeing the Ottawa studio’s production pipeline is promoted to Vice President, Studio Operations, expanding his areas of responsibility to include oversight of all general production and studio operations, reporting to Eland.  One of the original group of artists hired in Mercury Filmwork’s Vancouver studio in 1998, Allen rose through the studio ranks through artistic and technical positions before being named Head of Studio in 2015.

Supervising Producer Chantal Ling rises to the newly created role of Vice President, Original Series and Co-Productions, tasked with collaborating with broadcasters and partners on the development, financing, and production of series and co-productions, as well as supporting the management team at Lighthouse Studios. She will collaborate with Mercury Filmworks’ Head of Development Travis Williams, Chief Creative Officer Jerry Popowich, and Eland, to whom she will report.

Ling, who joined Mercury Filmworks in 2012 from a post as Executive Vice President of Amberwood Entertainment, will continue to leverage her extensive professional network and nearly two decades of experience (which earned her five Gemini Award nominations and a Gemini Award for best direction in an animated series) to create critically-acclaimed series for both Mercury Filmworks and it’s co-production partners.

Chantal Ling

Joining the team at Mercury Filmworks, Tara Pollock comes on board in the newly created role of studio manager. Reporting to newly appointed VP of studio operations Jefferson Allen, Pollock will also work closely with chief creative officer Jerry Popowich, who continues to oversee studio culture and talent development activities. Pollock brings a wealth of human resource management experience to her new position, and will be charged with managing artist recruitment, onboarding, benefits, sponsorship, events, and ongoing employee training and development activities.

Why you must be excited about ‘American Made’

Just as Hollywood business continues to gather steam with the box-office success of IT and Kingsman following a long, sluggish spell, superstar Tom Cruise readies to condense it with his latest outing, American Made.

Based on a true story, the crime-action film sees the 55-year old returning to his beat – gut-wrenching, exhilarating action adventure, pulling off some deathly stunts which is so a child’s play for him.

American Made may be the sole English release right now on 29 September, 2017, but there are reasons more compelling than that to watch it in a cinema house. Here’s some.

Because it’s Tom Cruise!

Come on, one just cannot dislike Cruise. The actor is one of the most likeable there is, winning hearts ever since he entered the fray over three decades ago, and even the neutrals cannot resist watching his movies.

Mission Impossible series, Rain Man, Minority Report, Jack Reacher, War of the Worlds etc. are some of his evergreen films that never fail to give the screaming abdabs everytime you watch them. But it isn’t only in the story, but the performance delivered by Cruise that makes it all the more gripping.

Whether it’s taking a leap from the world’s tallest building Bhurj Khalifa, or hanging on to a gigantic aeroplane during the take-off, or evading bulletshots by whizzing down on a bike through trails of flame, there’s nothing that Cruise hasn’t done to take our breath away.

And even as the Ol’ Father Time catches up with him, he shows no signs of stopping!

The mere fact that American Made stars Tom Cruise in the lead should be reason enough for you to head to the theatres.

Stunning visual effects

Tom Cruise means (a lot of) action, and (a lot of) action means (heavy) visual effects!

Director Doug Liam (The Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith) is no new to fiery explosions, aerial sequences, or mountain-top leaps. And with American Made, the film-maker returns to his thriving zone after a long hiatus.

The VFX for the movie are done by Mr.X, supervised by Craig Calvert and Scott Riopelle. The Toronto-based studios have weighed in with some flawless effects – planes flown over seas, Cruise crash landing, the firecrackers, house exploding, car bust-ups, and who knows what else!

So make sure you hold on to your seats thoughout the course, for this is going to leave you in splits.

Intriguing plot-line

In case you weren’t aware already, American Made is based on the life of Barry Seal, a former Trans World Airlines pilot who turned into a drug smuggler for the ruthless Colombian drug trafficking organisation, Madellin Cartel, in the late 1970s.

Barry Seal

Seal began smuggling small quantities of marijuana in 1976, but later flew hoards of cocaine across the border and into Mexico. On being apprehended in 1979, he became an undercover informant for the DEA to avoid the jail sentence.

The cat was later out of the bag, and Pablo Escobar, the head of the cartel, sent hitmen to assassinate him for double-crossing, bringing the undercover operation to an abrupt end.

Now go watch Tom Cruise lift the story up from the history pages.

American Made is written by Gary Spinelli and will be released by Universal Pictures.
