Cake signs deal with Cartoon Network for ‘Angelo Rules’ S4

Leading kids’ entertainment specialist Cake has announced a deal with Cartoon Network for a fourth season of multi-award winning comedy hit series Angelo Rules.

The forthcoming series of 52 x 11 minutes will premiere on Cartoon Network (as well as other Turner Kids channels in select markets) in EMEA and APAC in 2018 and promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats with new plot twists, on-trend technology including virtual reality, crowdfunding, Skype and social media as well as introducing brand new characters, who add a fun new dynamic to Angelo’s gang.

Cake CCO and managing director Ed Galton said, “Angelo Rules has broadcast continuously on Cartoon Network since launch and we are thrilled to team up with them once again on the fourth series, which we will be launching internationally at MIPCOM this year.”

Angelo Rules revolves around 11-year-old Angelo, a sweet-talking genius with a knack for getting out of trouble and became an instant hit when it debuted in 2010. Aimed at six to 12 year olds, it has aired in over 100 countries and has been widely recognised within the animation industry, receiving a Pulcinella Award at the 2010 Cartoons on the Bay Festival for the best kids TV series. Three mobile (Android and iOS) games: Angelo Rules – A Busy Day, Angelo Skate Away and Angelo Run and several mini games accompany the series.

Based on the French series of books Comment Faire Enrager, Angelo Rules is a Teamto-Cake co-production with TeleTOON+ in collaboration with France Televisions and Super RTL, written by Sylvie de Mathuisieulx and illustrated by Sebastien Diologent.

Xilam signs broadcast deals for ‘Oggy’ and ‘Zig & Sharko’ in Russia and CIS

Xilam, the French animation production company, has signed a raft of broadcast deals with networks across Russia and CIS for its hit animated properties Oggy and the Cockroaches and Zig & Sharko.

New broadcast licensees for seasons five, six and seven of Oggy and the Cockroaches include: Ukraine’s PlusPlus, Kanal 2 in Estonia and LNK in Lithuania. Seasons three and four of the series have also been sold to ViaPlay in the Baltics and MTG Viasat for its channel TV3 in Latvia. These acquisitions add to the existing deals for seasons three and four of Oggy and the Cockroaches with PlusPlus and Carousel TV in Russia, where the series currently airs every weekday.

Estonia’s Kanal 2 and Lithuania’s LNK are also on board for season two of Zig & Sharko, while ViaPlay in the Baltics recently purchased seasons one and two of the series and season one has been sold to TV3 in Latvia. Existing deals in the region include Carousel TV in Russia, which currently airs season two of the series.

Xilam Animation executive vice president of development and global sales Morgann Favennec said, “Russia and the CIS territories are an important part of our international roll out for Oggy and the Cockroaches and Zig & Sharko for both broadcast and consumer products. These latest deals highlight how these properties have both enduring appeal and are poised to win a new generation of fans.”

First aired in 1998, Oggy and the Cockroaches follows the prankish misadventures and confrontations between a chubby cat named Oggy and three pesky roaches. The series is distributed in more than 160 countries around the world and is watched in 600 million homes.

Zig & Sharko follows the comedic chronicles of a hungry hyena’s futile schemes to take a bite out of a beautiful, naive and theoretically delicious mermaid named Marina, who is under the protection of a tough-as-nails shark. The 2D series is created and directed by Olivier Jean-Marie and produced by Marc du Pontavice.

Gearbox’s ‘Battleborn’ to cease updates after fall season

It has been a rather quiet journey for Gearbox’s Battleborn and as it seems, the game would be taking its leave this fall as well. The game’s creative director, Randy Varnell took to the forums to write a post informing the players that the game will have no further updates after the fall season.

Even though the servers will remain up “for the foreseeable future”, the game will receive no further updates.

“As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall Update. Details of any future changes or news will be made on our forums or through social media, so keep your radars on.

Never fear! Battleborn is here to stay. Nothing is changing with Battleborn, and the servers will be up and active for the foreseeable future. We announced the Fall Update for the game at PAX including some new skins, themed around some of your favourite Borderlands characters! That update will also include some updated title art (more full bar titles!) for the more significant challenges in the game, as well as some additional Finisher Boosts and Taunts. Also, there are minor balance changes in that patch.”

Varnell will be shifting to a ‘highly anticipated, unannounced project’ from Gearbox Studios.

“Although I’m sad my time on Battleborn is coming to a close, I’m happy to announce that I will play a significant role on this highly anticipated but unannounced game, and I’m sure you’ll be hearing some from me again in the future regarding Gearbox games.”

Battleborn is a first person role-playing game with MOBA elements which released around the same time Blizzard’s highly anticipated shooter Overwatch released. Battleborn even went free-to-play at the beginning of June, but still missed the mark in attracting players. Although it received pretty decent reviews, the game was lost in the shelves with other titles taking over. While the servers will be up, the game having no updates means it is likely that eventually the title will end up barren.

IBC, which annually awards the latest innovations in media and technology, recognised VOOT’s pioneering initiative in giving mobile web users an app like experience in consuming digital video.

VOOT was the only online video service that was shortlisted for the awards, along with other leading organisations, amongst 190 plus entries from around the world.  VOOT won the award at a prestigious ceremony in Amsterdam yesterday.

VOOT is the first video platform in the world to have launched a progressive web app (PWA) product and that includes offline page caching functionality, fast loading, responsive interface and push notifications. VOOT was an early adopter of this technology which led to a huge jump in users and video watch-time on its mobile web. Speaking about the awards, Viacom 18 Digital Ventures COO Gaurav Gandhi added, “To win the IBC 2017 Innovation Award for content distribution is a huge honour for us at VOOT. In the video steaming business, both content and technology play an equally important role. While Viacom 18 is well known for pioneering efforts and leadership in the content business, it is indeed great to have our company feature on the global technology leaderboard as well. In this business particularly, partnerships and alliances are key to achieving big milestones and we would like to thank the team at Google for providing us support in our PWA.”
