It’s official! ‘IT’ sequel gets a release date

A still from ‘IT’

The spine-chilling horror that Andres Muschietti’s IT cast on its viewers is still afresh in the bones, courtesy the blood-thirsty clown of a monster Pennywise (with that hellish smirk) who took the horror genre into the stratosphere.

So whilst the movie continues to smash (box-office) records to smithereens, the makers have already confirmed the release of its sequel!

Production house New Line Cinema and distributors Warner Bros. Pictures have set 6 September 2019 as the release date for IT 2.

Given the resoundingly rave reviews that the first installment garnered from all quarters, a sequel was inevitable. In fact, as you must be apprised of, IT recorded the highest opening ever for a horror film, and is firmly on course to also become the highest grossing movie of the genre, of all time.

Pennywise lurking through a sewage

So for all the clamors and cacophony to watch the sewage-dwelling clown once again on the big screen, rejoice! He’s officially coming back to tug at your fear receptors.

Although the cast hasn’t been confirmed just yet, we’d definitely love to see Bill Skarsgard reprising the role of Pennywise, for there’s no one else who could replicate the kind of terror that he inflicted upon us.

Andres Muschietti is expected to be back on the director’s seat, while producers Barbara Muschietti, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg are expected to return as well.

Gary Dauberman, who wrote the screenplay for IT, has reportedly begun working on the script for the sequel.

‘Fatak Patak’ TV feature series to use merchandise as integral part

In line with successful global kids franchises like Pokemon, which uses toys as integral part of the story telling, India now has its very own franchise, Fatak Patak!

Nihodo Media, an Indo-Japanese IP company announced the launch of its new animated TV feature series called Fatak Patak to be enjoyed this festive season on Hungama. The franchise has been developed to provide children with a complete experience of the animated characters on television along with the opportunity to own and play with the toys in real time thereby making it one of the first kids franchise to use toys and gameplay as an integral part to content in India.

“A key desire and motivation behind this movie and toyline has been to provide Indian Kids with their own indigenous IP,” Nihodo Media CEO Suhas Sundar said while commenting about the launch. “Though there have been a slew of great content and innovation in kids’ entertainment in the past few years, with the exception of a handful, most of the toys that dominate retail shelves are based on foreign IPs and toylines. In this regard, Indian kids have been grossly overlooked and targeted toylines for Indian children are almost an afterthought. We wanted to change this status quo and give Indian kids their own world, their own toyline that can be fuelled further by their imagination. This toyline has been developed keeping the Indian kid in mind and hopefully we would be able to capture their imagination with both the Fatak Patak show as well as the toys”.

Dream Theatre is managing the licensing and merchandising for this franchise and toys are distributed by their subsidiary company- Play Planet.

Dream Theatre founder and CEO Jiggy George exclaims, “Fatak Patak could very well go on to become India’s answer to iconic brands like Beyblade or Pokemon! With high quality content to engage fans on TV and character led toys to engage them off-air, this property could set the trend for kids entertainment in our country!”

Fatak Patak is a four-part animated TV feature series about mysterious Alienoids with incredible powers from outer space competing in the Alienoid Wrestling League. The main protagonists, Sher Singh and his Alienoid Gabru will be seen in pursuit of the championship and their adventures along the way in the Fatak Patak World.

It is set in India with indigenous story lines and localised content that the target audience can relate to. The Alienoids appearing on the show will also be available as collectibles with pro-wrestling inspired features and elements of strategy for the kids to engage in gameplay. This is a unique undertaking as it is the first time the toyline and gameplay have been produced at the same time. The toyline will be released simultaneously along with the TV feature series.

“We are thrilled to premiere the Fatak Patak TV feature series on Hungama,” said Disney India VP and head (media networks & interactive) Abhishek Maheshwari. “It is very exciting that the series will be launched simultaneously with the toys as it will give kids the opportunity to have a complete experience of the characters and the storyline. We hope the kids enjoy both the TV feature series as well as the toys being launched.”

Hungama will air this animated TV feature series exclusively as a part of the Fatak Patak Movie Festival every Sunday from 17 September to 8 October at 10 am.

Framestore colourist Edwin Metternich relocates to Chicago office

Edwin Metternich

Framestore is proud to extend their global colour department to their newly opened Chicago office with the relocation of colourist Edwin Metternich. The Chicago team has been steadily growing with a series of high calibre appointments since opening in May 2017.

Edwin joined Framestore as a runner in 2007, moving quickly into the colour team as an assistant and progressing into grading after only a couple of short years. Edwin’s admirable work ethic has developed into a strong reel and a dedicated following of clients. He has been an integral part of the colour department in London and is excited to join Framestore’s newest office.

He has worked on a multitude of projects including Framestore’s first video game VFX job Guitar Hero Live and The Eye for Audi and frequent collaborations with award-winning agencies and production companies. He was acknowledged by Little Black Book as a top colourist to watch in 2015 and nominated for the Kinsale Sharks best colourist in a short film in 2016 and best colourist in a music video in 2017.

Blood Cells

His range of work also broadens to a selection of independent film projects, notably Blood Cells for British directing duo Joseph Bull and Luke Seomore, Jangbar with turner-nominated artist Zarina Bhimji, and BAFTA award-winning British short film, Operator. He has passionately collaborated with a collection of highly talented directors and has a strong client base including brands such as Speedo, Absolut, Barclays, and Microsoft. He will be missed by his loyal following of clients in London.

“Finding a talented colourist to help launch a new office and represent a brand like Framestore is certainly a tall order. The goal was to find someone who speaks the unique language of colour and possesses both the skillset and the personality to communicate effectively with clients; someone who brings a level of talent that would attract people to our Framestore offering and most importantly, someone who would continue to inspire and lead our team internally as we grow. To say we ‘lucked out’ to have Edwin officially join us is an understatement,” says Framestore executive producer Krystina Wilson.

Metternich says, “I am genuinely humbled by the welcome Krystina and the team here have shown me. I can’t wait to start repaying some of that faith. I have bold aspirations for colour in Chicago. We are creating an atmosphere where inspiration and creativity flourish. In my short time here I have discovered a vibrant, relaxed and stimulating city, full of humour and hard-workers. I’m looking forward to collaborating with new commercial clients from Chicago and across the Midwest.”

Redchillies VFX bags award for ‘Phillauri’ at Jagran Film Festival 2017

Having bagged the best VFX award for Fan at the prestigious IIFA earlier this year, Red Chillies VFX added another feather to their cap with a similar accolade at the Jagran Film Festival 2017.

Anshai Lal’s fantasy-comedy Phillauri was bestowed with the award for the best visual effects at the eight edition of the world’ largest travelling film festival. Red Chillies VFX supervisor and producer duo Harry Hingorani and Keitan Yadav collected the prize for their impeccable work with the effects.

Red Chillies VFX Chief Creative Officer Harry Hingorani

Beaming with jubilation, the duo said in unanimity, “We are extremely proud to be associated with Phillauri. It was a challenging project especially to make Anushka Sharma look like a ghost. Anshai Lal has this script for the past two years, and we saw how passionate he was about this story. So keeping this in mind, even though the resources were limited, we gave it an international look with never seen before VFX.”

Acknowledging the immense efforts that the rest of the team made, they said, “Kudos to our entire team of artists who worked day in and day out to give such a spectacular output.”

Quite naturally, the amazing accomplishment triggered a host of congratulatory wishes, as the duo say, “Clean Slate Films and director Anshai all congratulated us for this win.”

“We would also like to thank Fox Star Studios for giving us this opportunity and having faith in us, which helped us deliver such a great film.”

The star-studded closing ceremony of the eighth Jagran Film Festival saw many famous Bollywood personalities, both on-screen and off-screen, walk away with awards and accolades for their invaluable contribution to the Indian cinema. A special jury was constituted to frame the best talent in Bollywood and this included deciding awards under 38 special categories for the JFF Hall of Fame.
