If you want to learn more about this topic, start your googling with these keywords:
Solar window: a window that functions like an ordinary window but also generates power like a solar panel

Nanoparticle (also called nanopowder or nanocluster or nanocrystal): a microscopic particle with at least one dimension less than 100 nm. These tiny objects often have characteristics that differ from larger versions of the same material.

Quantum dots (QD): tiny nanoparticles of some kind of semiconducting material, only several nanometers in size, so small that their optical and electronic properties differ from those of larger particles. The QDs embedded in solar windows can absorb radiation largely in short wavelengths and re-emit in longer wavelengths; useful for capturing solar energy and successfully transferring it to the solar cells on the edges of the pane.

Total internal reflection: a phenomenon in which a wave hits a medium boundary at such an angle that it doesn’t pass through to the other side

Meaningless Conversations in Beautiful Environments

Against a backdrop of magnificent landscapes and epic tableaus, banal conversations take place between characters who are comically oblivious to their surroundings.

Quickshots: Making ‘Valerian’s’ Doghan Daguis talk together as one

romeo_shots_kid_0220_v11.1039

The Doghan Daguis are a trio of comical characters appearing in Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. They were created in CG by Weta Digital. On set, full-sized maquettes were filmed and then scanned to help craft the digital versions. Three performers also acted out the roles in performance capture marker suits.

One of the characters’ interesting traits is the ability to finish each other’s sentences, but it was a challenge for Weta Digital to differentiate between each speaker and make sure the audience knew who was talking. Weta Digital’s visual effects supervisor Martin Hill discusses how they pulled that aspect of the character off.

Martin Hill: To really read the vocals rolling across from one character to another, we generally, rather than amping up the character who was actually talking, we commuted the characters who weren’t talking. We generally closed their mouths down a little bit more and would not move their head around so much. It made it very much more clear who was performing at any one time.

Quite often, to make the characters more fun, to make them within the comic book world, we would alter their jaw during a shot so we could get the dental fricatives sounds, the ’th’ sounds so we can actually see their teeth.

Now, obviously, they’ve got these really long snouts. When they are facing one way or another to camera, they would generally talk on the side of their mouth that was facing camera, which is kind of an unphysical contrivance, but the trick there is always making it look natural, not making it look cartoony, making it feel like you are not noticing that you’re putting all of these cheeks and they’re not obvious things that they’re just all these nuances build the performance and make it more fun to watch.

OptiTrack Delivers Missing Links for Arcade VR at SIGGRAPH 2017

At SIGGRAPH 2017, OptiTrack is showcasing the first automated, all-in-one tracking solution for location based entertainment VR, marking a massive leap forward in both the quality of the experiences and also the usability for single and multi-site deployments of out-of-home VR.

Continuing its commitment to make motion tracking for immersive VR experiences as plug-and-play as possible, OptiTrack is showcasing two key advancements in their wide-area VR tracking at SIGGRAPH 2017. These advancements mark a massive leap forward in both the quality of the experiences and also the usability for single and multi-site deployments of out-of-home VR.

Full-Body Motion Tracking – Designed to deliver accurately moving avatars for each of the participants in a multiplayer VR game, the latest release from OptiTrack delivers a low latency, real-time stream of every player’s position, orientation and skeletal pose in the entire playing area. Now participants will see other players through their VR HMDs, significantly enhancing multi-user experiences. OptiTrack active “pucks” are attached to the hands and feet of each participant, delivering real time animation for each player present in the experience. The pucks are small (3.75” x 3.75”) and lightweight (3 ounces), powered with a rechargeable battery and are designed for the rigors of VR arcades.

Self Calibrating Tracking Systems – Significantly reducing the day to day operational complexity, as well as the staffing expertise required to run even the largest VR arcades, OptiTrack’s continuous calibration removes the need for the “wand wave” that has been a daily component of motion capture and tracking systems for over 30 years. No calibration maintenance is required following initial installation, and there is no longer a deterioration of the calibration over time. It simply produces the very best accuracy that OptiTrack is well known for 100 per cent of the time.

OptiTrack CSO Brian Nilles said,“Full-body motion tracking and self calibrating OptiTrack systems have been at the very top of the list for all of our VR arcade customers. The lack of a full-body tracking solution has been a glaring problem for consumers, who with today’s VR experiences often see no avatar at all, or at best, a crude animation of others’ activity in the play area. This market needed a high quality human tracking solution – with very little additional hardware on each participant, which makes OptiTrack Active the world’s first all-in-one tracking solution for out-of-home VR.”

He added,“The introduction of self calibrating OptiTrack systems is a huge benefit for all of our customers, but is vitally important to location-based VR because it dramatically reduces the time and steps to prepare the experience each day, and of course, can now be operated by arcade staff rather than experienced technicians.”

To see OptiTrack’s latest in VR advancements in action, stop by SIGGRAPH booth 731 August 1-3, 2017 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. OptiTrack, a Leyard Company, has established itself as the worldwide leader in 3D tracking systems by delivering the very best in 3D precision, low latency output, easy to use workflows, and a host of developer tools.
