First look of Hotel Transylvania’s animated short ‘Puppy!’ revealed

Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) released a first-look image of its upcoming computer animated short, Puppy!, which is based on its Hotel Transylvania franchise.

Nelvana and SPA had announced last week that their new animated series Hotel Transylvania: The Series was going to debut on Disney Channel starting 25 June, 2017. The announcement also said that three animated shorts will be released before the premiere.

However, Puppy! isn’t a part of these three shorts. In this short, the residents of Hotel Transylvania find their world turned upside-down when Drac’s grandson, Dennis gets a monster-sized pet. The short is produced by Hotel Transylvania 1 and 2 alum Michelle Murdocca and directed by Hotel Transylvania helmer Genndy Tartakovsky.

The short will debut at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival next month, and will run in theatres worldwide attached to SPA’s The Emoji Movie (28 July, 2017). Hotel Transylvania 3 is set to release on 22 September, 2018.

Animated series ‘Baahubali: The Lost Legends’ to launch on Colors

The highest grossing film ever in the history of Indian cinema is now set to make its television debut as an animated series. Riding high on the success of the Baahubali franchise, India’s leading entertainment channel Colors announced the acquisition of the broadcast satellite rights to the animated series spin-off called, Baahubali: The Lost Legends which was initially launched digitally on Amazon Prime Video.

This isn’t the first time that an animated series will be seen on a Hindi GEC channel. Last year, Colors took the bold step of broadcasting an animated show created by HopMotion – Chhoti Anandi on Sundays from 10 am to 11 am.

Commenting on the procurement of the rights, Viacom18, COO, Raj Nayak said, “Baahubali has proved to be a landmark film in the history of Indian cinema. Its success is nothing short of a case study for the Indian filmmakers. We at Colors pride ourselves for knowing the pulse of our viewers. Going by the ripples that this masterpiece has generated nationwide, we thought this was the right time to bring to our television audiences the folklores of Baahubali which have been captured stunningly in this animated series.”

The animated series which features all new original stories of the magnum opus from acclaimed filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, Graphic India and Arka Mediaworks is slated for a television launch on Colors soon.

He further added, “Graphic India’s show has tremendous appeal amongst the viewers as it cuts across age groups and stands out in the cluttered environment. Baahubali with its storyline and characters has created an entire ecosystem that can translate beyond the silver screen and make for excellent content in other mediums. The animated version is just an attempt towards that direction and we’re sure it will mesmerise the TV viewers.”

Baahubali: The Lost Legends has been created by S.S. Rajamouli, Sharad Devarajan and Arka Mediaworks, who are the producers, along with series lead writer, Ashwin Pande and Jeevan J. Kang, Graphic’s EVP Creative and the lead character designer for the new animated series.

On this partnership said director, S. S. Rajamouli, “The reach of television as a medium in India is extraordinary, and we’re thrilled to partner with Raj Nayak and Colors to bring the untold stories of the Mahishmati Kingdom to the television audiences. Our creation of the series with Graphic India and Sharad Devarajan was formed on the idea that we could launch an animated series that would go beyond just kids. With the Colors’ distribution platform, we will be able to bring Baahubali – The Lost Legends to the millions of people in India from ages eight to 80.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Arka Mediaworks, CEO, Shobu Yarlagadda said, “We are delighted that Colors is collaborating with Arka Mediaworks and Graphic India to bring the Baahubali animated series to television. The paradigm shift that Baahubali has brought into the entertainment industry is truly inspiring for all of us, and now with Baahubali: The Lost Legends fans of the film can continue to live the journey of Baahubali, Bhallaladeva and all their other favourite characters.”

Said Graphic India, co-founder and CEO, Sharad Devarajan, “The epic storytelling and groundbreaking visuals that S. S. Rajamouli created has captivated millions, and the future of Indian cinema shall now always be defined as ‘before Baahubali’ and ‘after Baahubali’. We are honoured to work with Raj Nayak and the amazing team at Colors to bring these new stories of Baahubali to television audiences across the country.”

Filled with intrigue, betrayal, war, action and adventure, the animated series will take audiences on new adventures beyond the film, as we learn for the first time the events that shaped Baahubali from a young prince into a legendary hero and reveal hidden secrets from the world of Baahubali for its millions of fans.

Assemblage Entertainment’s art director Ramana’s short film ‘Living Idle’ wins international acclaim

Prolific filmmaker Ramana’s live-action short film Living Idle – about a woman’s unconditional love for her husband and family – is fast gaining approval across the globe. It won 26 international awards at various film festivals, the recent one being at Five Continents International Film Festival (FICOCC) in May this year. The film which runs for a duration of seven minutes, revolves around a woman who goes to any extent to fulfil her duty without any expectations or biases towards her oppressors.

Ramana with FICOCC Award

Currently the art director at Assemblage – a Mumbai-based CGI animation production studio – Ramana closely works with Hollywood clients in areas related to visual development, visual scripting and design. Working in the movie business for over 20 years, Ramana has been a part of renowned studios including the likes of DreamWorks Animation and has been mentored by great film-makers such as Shekhar Kapur. Throughout his career, he has worked on films like Puss in Boots, Madagascar, Elizabeth, Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Prince of Persia.

On his film receiving worldwide appreciation, Ramana said, “The most important thing for a creative person to excel at his work is when he is allowed the freedom of expression. This automatically translated into one’s body of work. Working here at Assemblage, I have been given the kind of freedom that a film maker can only dream of!”

Ramana is the latest addition to the award-winning team at Assemblage Entertainment that consists of technocrats, artists and production managers with several years of experience in creating animation productions in collaboration with major Hollywood studios and independent production companies globally.

Congratulating Ramana on his recent success, Assemblage, head of strategy and new business, Arjun Madhavan adds, “Ramana’s ability to translate his creative visualisation into celluloid over a weekend’s worth of a shoot has been very impressive. Kudos to him, the brilliant actors and execution team for pulling this off!”

Living Idle is a symbolic short film that reflects actions have consequences. It is the story of an artist, a creative sculptor of idols that puts life and colour into clusters of mud and clay. Ironically, he fails to add colour to his own world – his family and child. The narrative revolves around how a creation of the sculptor – an idol of Ma Durga – punishes him (by rendering him indisposed and idle) when he crosses all limits of abuse and shows him a life of yearning. The film concludes with a deep dawn of realisation, of how a single action takes away from him his ability to be a prolific sculptor- that of clay and stone and that of his child’s future. The film is embedded with contrasting symbolism, as aptly reflected in its title, most strongly that of the strength of a woman, of a mother, which is representative in Ma Durga’s rendition of Good Over Evil.

The hunger for food, the hunger for physical fulfilment and the hunger for creativity are natural, necessary, and common human instincts. However, an unbalanced, excessive, and uncontrolled desire to fulfill one’s hunger leads to dire consequences, which is the story of Living Idle. The film presents a power packed performance from its two primary characters, Anil Mange and Geetanjali Mishra.
