“Think about money, don’t chase it”: John McKenna’s thoughts on a film-maker’s journey

A persistent question that has been troubling the animation industry since its inception is: how to get the money? Whether it is money for production, marketing or salary, it has been an arduous task to get it. Shedding light on this universal plight at Animation Masters Summit 2017, One Animation studio head John McKenna spoke on ‘Why Care About Money? The Film-maker’s Journey’.

Voicing every artist from the animation industry, McKenna said, “We came into the industry with passion, not with the intention to make money.” He explained that as animation artists, we study the craft, tell stories, connect with the audience and influence people throughout the world. Initially, money seems interesting, but eventually gets boring. But it still is important. “When you come to animation, you want to write, so you need to take money from others,” he stressed.

“I started my career in animation hoping to make great films; now I spend most of the time thinking from where to get the money from,” exclaimed McKenna, who has been in the animation industry for almost 25 years now.

These days, it is possible to find funding. IMDA (Infocomm Media Development Authority) could be a source of grants and subsidies. One can understand their mandate and then approach them. Major broadcasters and digital platforms like Amazon, Netflix and Google are always on the lookout for great content. Bank loans and investors can also be a source of funding.

But how do you get this invested money back? McKenna explained various ways to get your content to the audience and in the process get returns on the investment. Money can be earned through broadcasters, digital strategy and releasing the theatrical in domestic as well as international markets. Creating spin-offs has also been a successful practice. One move that almost every studio resorts to now is licensing and merchandising of the IP; producing apparel, toys, gadgets, accessories and launching mobile apps and games.

He is of the opinion that apart from the story, one also has to look at the quality, marketplace, audience preference, competition and cost to get a green-light on the budget. And a major component is whether the film can make a record at the box-office. “The future of your project is the audience. You have to think of them while working on it.”

Quoting William Goldman, McKenna said, “Nobody knows anything. Not one person in the entire motion picture field knows for a certainty what’s going to work. Every time out it’s a guess and, if you’re lucky, an educated one.” Every movie is a new experiment. As they are making it, the creators don’t know if it will work on not. No one in the industry can predict if the film will be a hit or a flop, and each creation has its own challenges. In these circumstances, he only has to say that “Don’t stop dreaming. Don’t try to make something commercial. Be aware of the money and you will get more made.”

Everyone talks about art, talent and creativity but McKenna addressed the most burning issue. In the end, he had only one advice: Think about the money, don’t chase it.

Fox’s ‘The Gifted’ teaser shows a struggle for survival

The first teaser of Fox’s upcoming X-Men series has been revealed. The project is a piece of collaboration between Matt Nix and X-Men director Bryan Singer.

The Gifted is looks exactly the opposite of what X-Men had shown us. Instead of showing the mutant organisation directly, the show focuses on a suburban couple played by Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker who discover that their children have mutant abilities and have to immediately run to conceal the truth owing to the increasingly hostile government. They soon discover an underground society of mutants and must struggle to survive.

The series comes from 20th Century Fox TV and Marvel TV. Singer will executive produce the show along with Simon Winberg, Jeph Loeb, Jim Chory and Lauren Shuler Donner.

The series also stars Sean Teale (Eclipse / Marcos Diaz), Natalie Alyn Lind (Lauren Strucker), Blair Redford (Thunderbird /John Proudstar), Jamie Chung (Blink /Clarice Fong), Coby Bell (Jace Turner), Emma Dumont (Polaris /Lorna Dane) and Percy Hynes White (Andy Strucker).

The official release date for the series has not been revealed yet, but we might come to know of it soon as the full trailer is slated to go live on 15 May. We’ll keep you updated!

Unity’s Mumbai Roadshow was more interactive than being just a teaching session

Unity successfully concluded its Mumbai Roadshow on 9 May. Even though the climate was not at its pleasant best, it did not deter around 90 enthusiasts from various fields to take part in the event, defying the blistering heat of the city.

People started gathering at the Concord Hall of Juhu’s Ramada Plaza at the stipulated time and soon after the registrations were done and everyone settled down, AnimationXpress, founder, chairman and editor in chief, Anil Wanvari took to the dais and kick-started the event. After the initial welcome address, Unity, regional director South APAC, Quentin Staes-Polet, was invited upon stage to address the attendees. He spoke about how Unity is gaining ground and reaching more masses day by day.

Concluding his brief introductory address, it was time for the global evangelist, Matthew Muller to take on the stage. After introducing himself, he put light on how Unity came into being and how it is changing the way content is created, or more precisely, how Unity is making it easier for the creators.

It was Muller’s first time in India and he had already visited a few studios, he informed. Unity currently has around 1.5 million active users worldwide and Muller; field engineer for Unity notified the attendees on big projects that Unity was involved in – like the recently released movie ‘Passengers’.

The first section of the event revolved around the genre of film making and how real-time rendering through Unity has made the process much easier. Citing one of its own creations as an example, he showcased ‘Adam’ and gave an overview to the audience on how the feature came into being. With more than a quarter million dollars spent on the demo of Adam, around eight people worked on it for around a year, as no one was working full-time on it.

Muller focused on the fact that why Unity is becoming the go-to-name for people in the industry, as they received a huge number of positive responses and enquiries from big studios of the film industry after the demo of Adam was released.

The speaker also talked about the animated short titled ‘The Gift’ and how Unity assisted the creators while production. Apart from that, before concluding the ‘Cinematics with Unity’ section, the speaker also highlighted ‘Mr. Cartoon’ which is a 13×2 animated episodic series on France TV.

Matthew Muller

Now, the topic shifted to gaming and people from the industry present in the attendees were all ears to the speaker. He started off by briefing about the Look Dev Tool which can be used to balance the environment in real time, further focusing on Setup: Linear and Gamma imagery, and the differences between them, how all images are linear firsthand and are much more photo realistic. He also went on to mention on how Unity has 4 render loops.

Focusing on camera techniques, he demonstrated the ‘fly camera’ which can be controlled by right clicking and using the buttons W, S, A and D and also on how to work on free camera.

Soon the speaker decided to make the session even more interactive than it already was. It was a game where he would show effects on the screen and the audience had to guess which effect is being used and the list included lens flare, lens dirt, tone mapping, bloom, motion blur and more. He spoke about lighting, ambient, direct, indirect light and more, while also informing how to control volumetric lighting on fog and object independently. Finally, he talked about Sequencer, the Experimental build 5.6, which is currently in beta and will be officially released in 2017.

The fruitful event came to an end with Muller answering questions from the audience, however the event had completely been interactive, rather than one sided. There was also a VR headset (HTC Vive) present at the event for the audience to experience virtual reality. Attendees were treated with finger food and beverages interspersed with a networking session.

Bullfighting from another age?

FLAC (Federation of Leagues Against Corridas) in France is raising awareness about the cruelty of bullfighting with a commercial featuring a velociraptor. FLAC and its fourteen partner associations ask the question, “Do you think this practice belongs to another age?”, and call on viewers to sign a petition to get bullfighting banned. The film begins with the taunting and killing of a velociraptor, suggesting that bull fighting belongs in the dinosaur era. The second half features archival footage from the corrida (bullfighting) culture of southern France and Spain. The answer to the film’s question is “No it doesn’t. It still exists”.

Bullfighting Dinosaur

The film’s release in French, Spanish, Basque and English, was timed to coincide with the French Presidential election and the run-up to the legislative elections. A recent poll, conducted by FIFG / AAFC in March 2017, shows that 7 out of 10 French people are in favor of banning bullfighting. A French civil code law, passed in February 2015, recognises the animal as a sensitive being that can suffer. Section 521-1 of the Criminal Code severely punishes serious and cruelty to animals, though paragraph 7 permits bullfighting performances with killing when “uninterrupted local tradition” can be invoked.

Bullfighting From Another Age Credits

The Bullfighting campaign was developed at BETC Paris by executive creative director Stephane Xiberras, creative directors Benjamin Le Breton and Arnaud Assouline, head of activation strategy Julien Leveque, working with Thierry Hely at FLAC Anticorrida.

Filming was shot by director Jean Michel Drechsler via Unit Image.

Sound was produced at Yellow Cab Studios.
