Trinity Behind ‘Baahubali’ Magic

Success has no shortcuts – it may be an old cliché’ but something which is quite relevant in our times. An abundance of talent sure helps but there have been too many tales where the path to brilliance have been crippled by the failure to put in the effort needed to convert the dreams into reality.

The few who strive forward with their focus and determination intact get to enjoy the fruits of their hard work but rarely do few get to witness a number of such individuals hailing from the same family. But that’s exactly what ace Telugu music director MM Keeravani, movie director SS Rajamouli and Radeon Technologies (AMD), SVP,and chief architect, Raja Koduri  – all hailing from the same Telugu family in Kovvur, Andhra Pradesh – have managed to do, achieving international recognition in their respective fields of music, art and technology.

MM Keeravani

Keeravani is the eldest of the three and has been a mainstay in the Telugu movie industry primarily as a music director as well as a playback singer. He got his big break with Mouli’s 1990 film Manasu Mamatha before Ram Gopal Varma’s Kshana Kshanam which truly established him as a name to be reckoned with.

A veteran who has worked in over 200 movies, made a successful entry into other Indian languages as well with evergreen hits like Tum Mile, Dil Khile from the movie Criminal, and Sisirikala from the Malayalam movie Devaragam to name a few.

The 55-year-old won the National award for Best Music Direction for the movie Annamayya and has also won six Filmfare Awards, nine state Nandi awards and a Tamil Nadu State Film Award.

Rajamouli stands out in the Indian movie industry as a director who dared to venture into the unknown with the fantasy genre. While other directors opted to play it safe with the tried and tested storylines, the man who grew up enthralled by the characters in the Amar Chithra Katha, has come a long way from the time he started out in the industry, directing soap operas.

SS Rajamouli

While blockbusters like Magadheera and Marayada Ramanaa made the Indian movie buffs to take notice of his brilliance, Rajamouli’s 2012 movie Eega transcended regional boundaries and gave him international acclaim.

Baahubali: The Beginning went one notch further and the attention to detail and the finesse with which Rajamouli expressed the larger than life characters was such a joy to watch. No matter which story he chooses to narrate, he has always ensured that the movie-going experience remains a truly memorable one for fans.

The extensive use of technology has been one of the reasons for the same and Rajamouli has always been able to seek the help of his cousin Raja Koduri, a pioneer in the field of computer graphics with more than 20 years of hands-on experience.

At ATI, Koduri worked as the principal architect of the R300 GPU – the world’s first DirectX 9-cable graphics card, before he moved on to Apple as it’s director of graphics architecture overseeing their rapid growth in the sectors of high-DPI displays and fast GPU hardware.

Raja Kadouri

In between, he served as the Graphics CTO at AMD and left Apple to return to the Sunnyvale-based company as a corporate VP of visual computing in 2013. He has been entrusted with the responsibility of both the GPU hardware and software – a very rare happening in the industry that both these are catered to the same person. But then, it’s not often that a visionary like Koduri, is born.

Always ready to accept any challenge, Koduri has overseen a remarkable turnaround in AMD’s fortunes and is building on his dream to build a Pixar-like company in India – something AMD was more than happy to oblige to with Koduri’s role as chief technical advisor to the board of directors for Makuta Visual Effects.

It’s amazing when you look back at the laurels the three brothers have brought to their family, with the promise of plenty more to come. What the talented trio could achieve can be witnessed in the recently released movie Baahubali: The Conclusion as Keeravani, Rajamouli and Koduri joined hands together for the epic bilingual movie.

Keeravani’s music has generated quite a buzz, while Bb360 – a 360-degree camera designed by Koduri – will provide viewers experience the effect of 360 video and virtual reality like never before helping Rajamouli tell the mythological tale exactly the way he wanted to.

It is heartening to see three brothers who are masters of their genre working in tandem and perhaps, a movie of such an epic proportion would not have been complete without this underlying bond of brotherhood behind the scenes.

Academy Pictures and Disney celebrate 75th anniversary of ‘Bambi’ with a reunion of the stars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Walt Disney classic with a screening and reunion of the film’s stars on Monday, 15 May, 2017 at Beverly Hills, California.

Special guests of the event included Donnie Dunagan (voice of young Bambi), Peter Behn (voice of young Thumper), Disney legend and animator Andreas Deja (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin) and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ production designer Paul Felix. A tribute was given to the famous Disney artist Tyrus Wong, who was the original artist who created the minimalist background painting style used in Bambi. Host  Leonard Maltin gave the audience a behind the scenes look into the Studio’s process and passion behind the animated feature while Felix said how Wong had inspired him as an artist.

Disney Animation tweeted Felix’s comment, “Bambi is still the basis of everything we do” and Behn’s comment, “I’m so touched to be involved in something that’s lasted almost as long as I have!”

Bambi joins the Walt Disney Signature Collection with a variety of new bonus material, including recordings of Walt Disney discussing the challenges and triumphs during the production of the film, deleted scenes and characters, stories and effects that Bambi had on the studio, other films and artists, and much more. Bambi will also take its place in the collection alongside three other great achievements in storytelling- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty and the Beast and Pinocchio.

Based on the novel Bambi: A Life in the Woods by Felix Salten, Bambi is the story of a young fawn that loses his mother to a hunter’s bullet but ultimately matures into a leader. His forest friends, Thumper and Flower, are among the most memorable characters in animation history.

The Disney Studio spent five years in production on Bambi due to its exquisite hand-drawn artwork and attention to detail, and used the multiplane camera to give the film its depth of images.

Dearest Bambi: Happy 75 years!

Qantas Feels Like Home Again

Qantas is running the third series in the Feels Like Home brand campaign, promoting the the build-up to the Perth-London service being launched in March 2018. Two commercials tell the real stories of people living in Australia and the UK, brought together for emotional reunions by Qantas. The Charlton family in Perth are reunited with their grandmother in the UK. Imogen travels to London for a reunion with her boyfriend Michael. The Qantas Feels Like Home campaign features the 787-9 Dreamliner, the new aircraft that will serve the new Kangaroo route between Perth and London, connecting Australia and the UK with a direct flight.

The Feels Like Home Stories

The Charlton family; Anna, Michael, and their girls live in Perth, while Anna’s mum Jackie lives in Bristol, UK, where Anna was born. Anna and Michael met in Europe while WA native Michael was travelling, and the couple moved permanently to Australia, where they had their two children. Jackie has a very close relationship with the family despite the distance, with plenty of video chats, phone calls and parcels but misses her daughter and grandchildren. Michael surprises Anna with flights home for the family to see her mum in the UK.

Imogen and Michael met at University in their hometown of Brisbane. When Michael moved to London for work in 2016, Imogen remained in Australia to complete her studies for a further 12 months. Michael surprises Imogen with a trip back to Australia after a long time apart. In a lovely turn of events, since completing the shoot Imogen has moved to London, where the couple now live and work.

Behind the Campaign

Qantas’ Group Executive for Brand, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Olivia Wirth, said the build-up to the Perth-London service was the perfect opportunity to evolve the Qantas Feels Like Home campaign.

“The Kangaroo Route to the UK has had special meaning for Australian travellers since Qantas first flew to London the 1940s. With this new series of Feels Like Home, we wanted to capture the memories and emotions that Australians associate with the Kangaroo Route, but also look ahead to a new era with our non-stop Perth-London flights. We think it does a beautiful job of exploring the significance of linking Australians directly to the UK for the first time, focusing on real people and experiences. Qantas invests heavily in promoting Australia as a tourist destination and the campaign, which is also running in the UK, also shows some of the fantastic places travelers can visit in Western Australia in a single hop.”

Qantas worked with creative agency The Monkeys to develop the series. Justin Drape, The Monkeys’ co-founder and Chief Creative Officer, said the new campaign built on the homecoming stories that features in the first two Qantas Feels Like Home Again series.

“The late Neil Lawrence, Mark Molloy and the Qantas team started this campaign with beautiful emotional stories that have resonated with all Australians who travel. With the Charlton family and Imogen’s and Michael’s story, we wanted to continue this type of storytelling while also showing what it means to be able to fly directly between Australia and London.

FAQs:

Q. Why isn’t ‘Off to the Vet’ available in full on YouTube?
A. ‘Off to the Vet’ film production and crowdfunding campaign was a huge undertaking for the Simon’s Cat Team. Our hope is to produce more long form, full colour content for our fans but without having to turn to them through crowdfunding again. The film was completed in 2015 and submitted it to a selection of international film festivals over the following months. During this time it was exclusively available to all funders that contributed via our private production blog. The feedback we have received from our funders has been overwhelming positive and we hope they are extremely proud of making the film a possibility. If you are a funder and have any questions regarding the campaign please contact us at igg@simonscat.com

Q. What software do you use?
A. Simon’s Cat is made using Adobe Flash / TV Paint animation software.

Q. Why does it take so long to make each Simon’s Cat film?
A. Even though the films are made on computer software, they are still hand-animated in a traditional manner, frame to frame. It usually takes between 12 and 25 drawings to create 1 second of a Simon’s Cat film.

Q. Where can I buy Simon’s Cat merchandise?
A. You can purchase Simon’s Cat products from the official web shop: http://www.simonscat.com/Shop
