Let’s talk about those crazy ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ warp shots

QSH0085_CMP_v007.1043

A stand-out moment in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 occurs when Yondu, Kraglin, Rocket and Baby Groot jump through several space portals causing their faces to warp and distend in almost grotesque ways.

Trixter pulled off the scenes by re-creating photoreal digital doubles of Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Kraglin (Sean Gunn) while also deforming 3D models of Rocket and Groot, to hilarious effect. Trixter visual effects supervisor Alessandro Cioffi breaks down the work in this series of images.

QSH0055_CMP_v017.1023
As we were being briefed by [overall visual effects supervisor] Christopher Townsend on the sequence, I must admit it was a tiny bit intimidating. These were close-ups of well-known actors, one of which is the brother of the director James Gunn! So creating a digi-double of these two actors was definitely a challenge.
QSH0087_CMP_v009.1037
We replicated their performances first, one to one. So we had the actors from the plates. We had to re-create digitally the performance, without any difference whatsoever. Once this was done, we then lit and rendered and composited them to make replica in a digital form from the neck up – then we started playing with the deformation.
QSH0095_CMP_v010.1011
The performance was based on a system of blend shapes. We’re talking only about four or five shots, and time was against us, so we preferred building the blend shapes and keyframe animating to replicate the performance. Then we started playing with the deformation. At first, it starts very gently and ramps up to the very end of the sequence, where they go really deformed and wild, almost crazy.
QSH0085_CMP_v007.1043
Our animation supervisor Simone Kraus and the animators came up with this crazy solution and I thought Marvel and Chris were not going to go for it. But James Gunn was so amused that he wanted to push on the craziness. In fact, you see Yondu go really grotesque in his shapes – he becomes almost fluid or rubbery. We also added in some soft tissue simulation around the cheeks and ears to make it appear less stiff.

Talks on VR’s capabilities descend over ‘OTTv Summit Mumbai’

The OTTv Summit Mumbai which was held on 18 Mat, 2017 at Taj Lands End was a brief event with players from the industry making up the list of attendees along with the young enthusiasts.

The panels provided some insights on how the television and digital industry works, its current state and made some projections as well.

They asserted that Television and OTT services will run side by side and one will not obliterate the other, to which there was a difference of opinion. Sony Pictures India, head marketing and analytics digital business, Abhishek Joshi asserted that television is old and has had enough time to grow, OTT platforms, the concept itself is fairly new and it will take time to solidify its place.

Another fact stated was that digital gives the consumer the power to choose, while it’s not much present in the case of television.

After the initial round of panels, the attendees had a decent networking session over lunch and trying out the VR gear presented by the studios around.

Clyde DeSouza

REALVISION, VR filmmaker, Clyde DeSouza took to the stage soon to present a short overview on how VR is advancing and how to monetise it.

He asserted the problem with this quote, “One OTT pie, too many forking it.” He then focused on the perks by which a VR offering can make an OTT platform ‘sticky’, as in keep the users attracted. As Netflix and Hulu already have or are working on their individual VR apps, the speaker was sure that it was the way to go for others as well.

According to him, VR offers emotional engagements and activates empathy with the consumers being transported to that state completely. Thus, even though the price of the HMDs coupled with other factors are holding back the medium from being easily usable, the speaker wants entities to ‘future proof’ their VR content.

Coming to monetisation, he said that news mediums can make it work in real time, by giving the viewers an immersive experience of what they are reporting.

He even proposed the idea of creating these content in India, making it worthy of dubbing and then exporting it to other parts of the world.

The last session about VR discussed the scope of VR properties over OTT platforms. While some were bullish about the fact, others rested their case with speculations, but no one outright denied it.

The panel consisted of Enlighten, CEO and founder, Pranav Ashar; Real Vision (Dubai), VR filmmaker and partner, Clyde DeSouza; Digital Art VRe, managing director and co-founder, Ajay Parge and 360 VRX, VR technologist, Gaurang Shah.

Most of the panelists initiated the session with their individual achievements in the field of VR.

As asserted by the panel, AR devices are still at infant stages and would take a lot of time to be perfected, hence VR would grow by the time. However, both the mediums are completely different and have no competition as such.

Other than this, pilgrimages and tourism can be major sectors where VR can be used was the verdict of the panel.

‘Destiny 2’ to arrive on PC through Blizzard’s dedicated platform

Possibly the biggest news coming along with Destiny 2 reveals was the fact that it would be available on Blizzard’s platform, Blizzard App. The app which was formerly known as Battle.net was recently renamed and hosts Blizzard’s famed titles World of Warcraft, Starcraft II, Diablo III, Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone and its newest IP, Overwatch.

The developers of the game, Bungie, disclosed during the gameplay reveal event that the PC version of the game would be coming through Blizzard’s platform at some point after 8 September which is the slated release date for the game on PS4 and Xbox One.

Speculations were that the game would come on Steam or an independent app from the developers, but Blizzard Entertainment, CEO, Mike Morhaim announced the move at the end of the presentation. The game was initially available over consoles and its move to PC should help the makers create an even stronger player-base, especially when it is releasing on the Blizzard platform alongside aforementioned famed IPs.

Bungie has a 10 year publishing deal with Activision and its IPs releasing over Blizzard platform is possibly because both Bungie and Blizzard are currently under the Activision banner.

Apart from that players were pleased to find the newly revamped clan system, which makes the process much more lucid. Crucible, the game’s competitive (ranked), multiplayer mode will now feature 4 vs 4 battles instead of 6 vs 6.

We will have to wait for further announcements.

‘Black Lightning’ trailer: Meet CW’s newest show where justice walks like thunder, strikes like lightning, and runs in the family

The CW has released the first trailer of Black Lightning, and it is packed with action and drama but unfortunately, will not be a part of the larger DC extended universe that the network has put together.

Played by Cress Williams, Black Lightning is one of DC’s first headlining black superheroes. In the trailer, Jefferson Pierce is shown as a superhero who keeps the streets safe from a gang known as The 100, and is “hope, personified”. But after a particular nasty fight in 2005, he retires and focuses on his life as a father and his career as a Garfield High principal. Fast forward to 2017, and the gang violence hasn’t stopped. When his daughter is threatened, he returns to crime-fighting. Adding to the excitement, seems like the powers run in hid bloodlines, hence his daughter is also seen to manifesting the powers.

The premise of Black Lightning series seems to be heavily adapted from the original Black Lightning: Year One comic series. In the comics, Jefferson Pierce is a teacher at Garfield High School who creates an electronic belt which he uses to fight crime in his impoverished Southside community in Metropolis.

In recent years, The CW has put together an impressive universe based on DC characters which includes ArrowThe FlashLegends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. However, Black Lightning won’t be joining that line-up (for now).

Supergirl was initially separate when it began its life on CBS, but later joined the same universe when it moved to The CW for its second season. Though the producers of these five shows are the same and they are /will air on the same channel, Black Lightning won’t exist in the same universe like the other four. Black Lightning is starting off its life outside of the Arrowverse, but there are chances we might get to hear about the crossover in future (maybe connected via infinite Earth).

Based on the characters from DC, Black Lightning is from Berlanti Productions and Akil Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti, Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil. Black Lightning character was created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden.

Justice, walks like thunder, strikes like lightning, and runs in the family. Justice arrives mid-season.

Here’s the synopsis of the show:

Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighbourhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his Super Hero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn (Christine Adams), suffered. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.
