Speaker line-up for Gnomon Live Australia 2017 has been announced

Gnomon has announced the speaker line-up for Gnomon Live Australia 2017, a specially curated program of CG masterclasses and live demos. Taking place in Melbourne and Sydney in March and April, the two-city, two-weekend event will give local artists a chance to meet industry legends like Avatar, creature designer, Neville Page and Star Citizen, art director, Josh Herman, along with leading Australian studios Animal Logic, Plastic Wax and PlaySide Studios among others.

First held in Melbourne in 2016, Gnomon Live is returning to Australia, with attendees of the inaugural event describing its combination of technical insights and networking opportunities as “truly one of the most valuable learning experiences” and “something the Australian industry has been needing for a long time”, as well as “an opportunity to talk to industry veterans and obtain crucial information (for career development).”

This year’s show will again give attendees a chance to see industry techniques first hand, as artists share their experiences working on feature films, AAA and mobile games, commercials, and VR and AR experiences. Speakers include Neville Page who has worked as creature designer for movies including Avatar and Star Trek; character art director at Cloud Imperium Games, Josh Herman; environment artist at Naughty Dog, Brian Recktenwald; entertainment art director at Magnopus, Alex Nice; director and visual effects artist Miguel Ortega, who recently completed work on the acclaimed short The Ningyo; and Tran Ma, a character and environment artist whose credits include Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Alice in Wonderland.

Gnomon Live
The masterclass program is curated by Alex Alvarez who is the founder and president of Gnomon. Described by Fast Company magazine as a visionary who has helped change the face of computer graphics education, Alvarez is responsible for creating both leading international training institution Gnomon – School of Visual Effects, Games and Animation, named School of the Year at the 2014 and 2015 CG Student Awards, and The Gnomon Workshop, which provides professional online training for CG artists.

“We are excited to be returning to Australia in 2017 for Gnomon Live, with a new group of extremely talented industry artists,” said Alvarez. “This is a unique opportunity that we are all grateful for, and hope to bring some valuable knowledge, techniques and inspiration to the students and professionals who join us. With such a range of experience amongst the presenters – characters, creatures, environments, film and games – I can’t wait to also learn from my peers, while meeting new like-minded artists from the other side of the globe.”

The international speaker line-up will be complemented by a series of panel discussions highlighting opportunities and challenges for artists in the Australian CG industry. Firms taking part include Animal Logic, responsible for the animation and visual effects of the Oscar and BAFTA Award-winning films Happy Feet and The LEGO Movie; Plastic Wax, creators of cinematics for AAA games franchises including Gears of War and Civilization; and mobile games developer PlaySide Studios; alongside the Australian studios of international visual effects companies Luma Pictures, Method Studios, and Firemonkeys, the Melbourne studio of international video game developer Electronic Arts.

The panel discussions are curated by Australian nonprofit organisation ‘The Design Foundation’, responsible for the noted international Ideas on Design program of events. “As Gnomon begins its 20th year with the announcement of its first bachelor of fine arts, it is a great opportunity to be able to share more of what Gnomon has learned over the past two decades, evolving alongside the phenomenal advancements in the computer graphics industry,” said The Design Foundation, director and manager, Kristin McCourtie . “Working closely with leading studios, their considered development over this time has resulted in training programs that position Gnomon as the benchmark for computer graphics education in the world. Gnomon Live Australia is brought to our region with support and endorsement from government, philanthropic, and industry partners. We are pleased to be working with Collie Print Trust, Screen NSW, Film Victoria, Wacom, Chaos Group, and media partners ArtStation and CG Channel.”

Gnomon Live Australia takes place at Melbourne’s Abbotsford Convent on 31 March to 2 April, 2017 and at Sydney’s Factory Theatre on 7 to 9 April, 2017.

Day 3 of Orbit Live 2017: Animated shorts & workshops mould students; ‘Industry Conclave’ observes discussion on future of M&E industry; Awards Night hosted

After the two hectic days at Arena Animation’s Orbit Live 2017, the seminars and events all culminated into a third day (4 February, 2017) filled with workshops and ended on a high festive note with the Awards Night.

NFTS UK, director, Nik Powell screened three animated shorts which were made by the students of his film school and went on to win awards. One of the animated shorts was ‘Miss Todd’ – a stop-motion, musical animation about the first woman in the world to build and design an airplane. The film is inspired by the real life story of an American woman E. Lillian Todd. Though there’s no evidence to prove if she had flown a plane or not, the film showed a happy ending of the woman soaring high in the sky in her own plane. “We’re about human stories and like stories based on humour,” Powell said after the screening. He was of the view that their films worked because all of them had a human touch.

Following the screening, there were six hour-long workshops conducted simultaneously by the international experts. These workshops included 3D Photography by Xes Vila, 3D Fractals in Animation and VFX by Patryk Kizny, Stop Motion Animation by Damian Perea, CG/Live Action Integration by Paul Noble and 3D Animated Performance by Penny Holton.

Orbit Live had also conducted an ‘Industry Conclave’ on the future of media and entertainment, which was inaugurated by Aptech, director, Anuj Kakar. Kakar gave a brief on Aptech and thanked all the industry professionals for being present at the event. Highlighting Aptech’s role in helping students interact with professionals on the working and future prospects of the industry, he said, “We help the students realise their interests.” Gurnani Media founder, Anand Gurnani hosted the five panel discussions of the conclave.

The panel discussions observed during the day were ‘Virtual Augmented and Mixed Reality: New Frontiers in Entertainment’, ‘Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning in Media Entertainment’, ‘VC (Venture Capitalist) Perspective on Technology Intersecting Media Entertainment’, ‘Defining New Age Consumers and Consumption Patterns in Media and Entertainment’ and on ‘Emerging Trends to watch out for in Animation, VFX and Gaming’.

After an enlightening conclave which ended with the high tea, the stage was set for the awards night of Orbit Live 2017. Performers geared up to put their best foot forward and the students waited anxiously for the winners to be announced. Trophies for ‘Pride of Indian Animation’, ‘Hall of VFX Fame’, ‘VFX of the Year’, ‘Guru of Indian Animation’ and many more categories were awarded to the Indian artists. The legendary voice-actor of India – Chetan Shashital – was honoured with ‘Excellence in Voice Acting’ award. The crowd switched from bursts of laughter to sheer admiration as the voice maestro enacted voices of some of his most famous characters including Darth Vader for the Hindi dubbed Star Wars, Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse.

The Russian band of girls called Silver Strings gave an electrifying performance by playing the international tunes along with few Indian numbers.  This was followed by student awards. A glimpse of an upcoming project initiated by Vaibhav More which has been powered by Arena Animation got premiered  on the Award night. The project will capture the spirit of the unknown artists of India and will take us through their lives. The awards night ended with a vote of thanks.

The third day came to end with exhilaration and a tinge of sadness. Students were set to go back with bountiful of knowledge and inspiration from the speakers. However, before leaving, on the next day which is 5 February, 2017, recruitment drive was conducted wherein some of the top studios came-in to recruit the crème-de-la-crème students of Arena animation.

Bidding their final adieus, all the masters had one single message to share: “Be passionate about everything that you do. You are sure to find success.” It takes a lot of determination to make a mark in this field and a lot of dedication to adhere to that determination.

‘Iron Fist’ arrives to conclude ‘The Defenders’ roster

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and now, rounding up things for The Defenders would be Iron Fist.

Marvel tweeted out the trailer for Netflix’s Iron Fist which will be the last title before the aforementioned four merge in The Defenders. The teaser for the series was launched back in October, 2015 during New York Comic Con.

The new trailer gives us an insight about the protagonist, Danny Rand, played by Finn Jones. According to the backdrop, Danny was a mere 10 year-old who hailed from the elite class of New York. His father founded Rand Enterprises, however things take a turn for the worse as the little boy and his family face a plane crash in which the whole family is presumed dead.

The teenager however, miraculously survives and ventures into the mythical city of K’un-L’un. It is here, Danny learns martial arts and more. The trailer then fast forwards 15 years, Danny returns to Rand Enterprises, New York, bare foot. Now, he wants to carry forward his father’s legacy with Rand Enterprises, but in order to pursue that, he must first purge the system from some dangerous threats who are infiltrating the company internally.

Danny has also gained some mystic superpowers and they are possibly rested in his right fist and hence the name.

Iron Fist features Finn Jones, Rosario Dawson, Jessica Henwick and is the fourth installment in Marvel and Netflix’s five-part television series from the MCU. The concluding chapter, The Defenders, will be released later this year.

Iron Fist is slated for a 17 March premiere on Netflix.

Love Me Now

Music is “Love Me Now” by John Legend.

When I open up my eyes
Inspiration all around
I feel so alive
And I know it in my heart
Something magical is about to start
I’m holding this feeling till it’s gone
So I’m gonna love you now, like it’s all I have
A whole world of dreams we can explore
The moment is crying out
I want you to love me now
Love me now, feel me now
Oh just look around, oh
Love me now, feel me now
Can you feel it coming down, oh
Love me now
I see the color in each moment of life
