Studio Ghibli’s ‘The Red Turtle’ trailer displays simple animation with a mysterious story

When you are bombarded with advanced animation from all around, sometimes ‘Simplicity’ takes over the wheel. Amidst the new technical style of animation, often something simple startles you and nourishes your visual experience.

Studio Ghibli‘s co-production The Red Turtle has the same effect as it proclaims nothing but Simplicity. The first trailer of the film released displays the traditional style of 2D animation with the minimum use of colours and simple characterisation.

Based on the adversity of nature, the protagonist gets stranded to an unknown island. Man can adapt to any environment when it comes to fighting the battle of survival. So does the protagonist as he finds ways and means to live and survive on the island.

However, to his demise the huge red turtle breaks through the raft and destroys all possibilities of survival. The story takes a significant turn as suddenly a girl emerges from the water out of nowhere. When a man and woman meet, the emotion of love is propelled vividly. The duo go ahead to make a family leading to a small kid on the isolated land.

The island probably becomes the home for the family as their kid grows up playing around and living a cheerful life immersed in the beauty of nature. But hold on, nature has its own beauty and its own atrocities too.

The merry life of the characters takes an unexpected leap as nature doesn’t seem quite happy with them. Will they still fight the battle of survival? Can they or anyone for the matter stand against the power of nature? Moreover, what is the mystery of the red turtle? One can probably speculate that the girl is the red turtle for she emerges from the water just out of the blue and has resemblance of red hair too. (Just a speculation though)

Produced by Why Not Productions and Wild Bunch in association with Studio Ghibli, the film directed by Michaël Dudok de Wit will open the 40th Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June this year.

French video game distributor who had allegedly leaked PS4, Neo 4K denies claims of having any information

With Sony already announcing that they will be releasing their VR device for PS4, PS VR in October this year, the speculations about an upgraded edition of PS4 has also been doing rounds throughout the community.

A post from a major French video game distributor, Innelec Multimedia, had instigated the speculation further as their press release on a stock website named Boursier.com claimed that ‘Neo 4K’ was likely to hit the shelves sometime during the first half of the company’s fiscal year, which is April, 2016 to March, 2017, meaning the product should be released somewhere during September 2016.

PSVR

Now, that being said, it actually sounded like a possibility. As Sony is all set to launch its VR device into the market, the company might very well be looking forward to an enhanced console to support the system. The Neo 4K supposedly features a better hardware system with an improvised GPU, CPU and memory. Also, reportedly the games have to be ‘Neo ready’ by October, although they will be required to run on the original one.

There has been no communication from the side of Sony regarding the connection, but the timings of the release of the products seem too good to be a coincidence.

Although, in a recent update on the issue on afjv.com, Innelec Multimedia released a statement shifting from their earlier claims saying:

“Innelec denies any official information about the launch of a PS4K Neo. It is possible that during the 2016 / 2017 fiscal developments exist on the current PS4 (but) for the moment we have no information about the nature of them.”

Although, there is still no clarity about the facts, the expectations are still high. We will just have to wait for a while and find out.

Overwatch beta review: Refreshing gameplay with polished yet simple detailing adds up to an absolutely brilliant experience

Blizzard’s upcoming first person shooter, which was scheduled for a closure on 9 May, Overwatch recently concluded its open beta on 10 May and according to the developers, they received an overwhelming 9.7 million players trying out the beta version, so much so, that they even extended it by a day as a “thank you gesture”. The game will be Blizzard’s first IP in a long (really long) time. The game is built upon the spoils of Blizzard’s scraped project Titan and will be the company’s first shooter game.

So, how does Overwatch actually fair against expectations? After trying the game (on PC), here’s what I feel about it.

Interface

The first thing that grabs your attention and attracts you to the games is its simplicity in accessibility; just clicking on the ‘Play’ button from the battle.net will take you inside the game. Once you are inside the game, the options are highlighted pretty clearly, just choose what you please, click and voila! No framing, no delays. Just like any other game, your friends are listed on the ‘social’ and other options include your choice of game mode and more. While you pick your character in a match, the interface drops hints (which are not really subtle) that helps you in coming up with a balanced team. Stressing on the point again, the screen looks absolutely clear, bright and vibrant without a single complicated tributary network of options.

Characters

Now, this is where Blizzard’s Overwatch takes a stand to rise above all. The game currently has 21 unique, playable characters to choose from and each one of them is absolutely different from the other. From Tracer, the time jumping adventure to Zenyatta, an orb wielding robo-monk (YES!), the 21 characters are segregated into four classes: defence, offence, support and tank. Each character has a couple of basic spells, one ultimate spell apart from their basic attacks (an alternate basic attack for some) and each of them brings something unique to the table.
The trailers might seem a bit cartoonish for some, but once you start playing, you will realise that the game is nothing like that. Every character has been detailed carefully keeping every aspect of it in mind. You can clearly differentiate and recognise each of them after just a few tries. Everyone has a different mode of attack, which furthers strengthens their individuality.

Overwatch 2 (2)

Lighting and Sound

As mentioned already, each character is different, thus each ability and attack sounds different, making it easy even for a new player to recognise. The sound helps you keep a track of enemy’s ability, availability and positioning; all of it with a pretty subtle background score. As for the lighting effects, yes that has been done well too, except for some parts maybe, where it just gets a bit too bright and the shading could be amended a little.

Gameplay

Overwatch shifts its paradigm from your traditional shooters like Call of Duty or Counter Strike. Over here since the re-spawn time is not much; the goal is not just about eliminating the enemy (which is fun though) but sticking to the objective. Further shifting from its contemporary shooters, who resort to 5 vs 5 gameplay, Overwatch has a 6 vs 6 player mode. Although the game takes its cue from the famed multiplayer shooter, Team Fortress 2 it is much more fun to play. The key to win the game here is sticking to the objective rather than the kills (but trust me, it is absolute mayhem throughout the map, always).

Currently there are 12 maps which feature multiple varieties of objectives, like assault, escort and control. From tastefully cherry tree-decorated Hanamura to snow clad Volskaya Industries, each map has something new to offer, fabricated in a way to fit the play styles of every character. The initial tutorial pretty much covers the basics of the game and lets you jump straight into a match.

Overwatch 2 (1)

Concerns

Although, Overwatch is an absolutely refreshing game to get your hands on, there are few things that raise concerns. Firstly, the leaver-busting system of the game did not look in place. Players kept quitting matches in between games, leaving their team in problem, while Blizzard’s MOBA, Heroes of the Storm substitutes the leaver with an AI player, there is nothing of that sort in Overwatch, neither does it seem like a strict leaver-penalty system is in place (yet). I hope Blizzard adds it with the launch. Secondly, as mentioned by a lot of players, the modes of the game ‘might’ be a bit imbalanced, which makes defending quite a bit easier than attacking. Thirdly, the game, in the beta had no signs of ranked or competitive gameplay, which might disappoint some players who want to play with other players of same skill level to earn ranking. Hopefully Blizzard will implement this sooner or later (the sooner the better, though). Lastly, the game is devoid of any single-player / co-op campaign mode, like one of Overwatch’s contemporary Battleborn has.

Final thoughts

Despite of some (very minute) drawbacks, Overwatch definitely stands out as an immersive, fun to play game (which becomes more enjoyable with friends). The game servers are pretty sound, providing a stable game indulgence. The revenue policy for the game seems to be a one-time-pay, wherein once you have purchased it, the future content (heroes, maps etc) that will be released would be accessible at free of cost, which actually sounds really good. The matches have time limits, thus making them short with amazing experiences.

So, if you want to try out an action packed, multiplayer online shooter with cyborg ninjas, Russian snipers and shotgun wielding evil fiends going absolutely berserk throughout, you should definitely get your hands on the game as it’s worth every penny. Overwatch is scheduled to release on PC, PS4 and Xbox on 24 May, 2016.

TFC Game Lab – A dedicated space for game developers to work and collaborate to open in Delhi

Delhi game developers are in for a treat. Starting tomorrow 15 May, a new space will be one of the bright spots to locate game developers working and collaborating on games and ideas. TFC Game Lab is a collaboration between The Founders Café, Lucid Labs founder Chirag Chopra and AppRoarr founder Jaskaran Singh. We talk to Chirag and Jaskaran to find out about the new place and what’s in store for the game developers.

“TFC Game Lab is an initiative to support and promote the indie game developers of India. We aim to become one stop shop for game dev entrepreneurs by providing an unique co-working space to game developers, promoting collaboration and helping them create their next big thing with support like game funds, hardware, publisher tie-ups and mentorships,” says Chirag.

How does one approach them for a space at the Game Lab and what plans are on offer?

“Right now we are offering couple of plans to people who are interested in becoming a part of TFC Game Lab. We are inviting game devs to come and pitch their ideas to us and we’ll help them with funds, publisher tie-ups, resources, collaboration. The idea is to create a holistic ecosystem of talented game devs who can prosper with collaboration and resources offered by TFC Game Lab,” expresses Jaskaran.

TFC-2

TFC Game Lab is built with the motto ‘For the Indies, By the Indies’ and four studios have already booked the space and Chirag is expecting more after the launch party. Chirag says that TFC Game Lab right now has space for 20 to 25 people but plans to scale up as they get more registrations.

“We are not trying to fill the space with just any dev, we want to build a community of talented studios and individuals who have potential to make awesome games. Quality over quantity,” ends Chirag.

TFC Game Lab will open its door with a launch party tomorrow. The attendees will be in for fun and play time with a number of games lined up: both on consoles and smartphones. One can also experience Virtual Reality (VR) at the party and network with fellow game developers.

Truth Detector Radio

89FM, one of Brazil’s leading radio stations, has developed Truth Detector Radio (Detector de Verdades), an innovative new approach to one of the world’s oldest forms of electronic media. This innovation accompanies the release of a new interview format with proprietary dynamics and content: “Truth Detector,” a Radio Talk show in which listeners can see on their radio dial if the person being interviewed is lying or telling the truth. The program works like this: a list of guests has accepted the challenge of being interviewed while they are connected to a polygraph – equipment used by the police to find out whether people are telling the truth. With Radio Data System technology, the listener will see in real time the words ‘true’ or ‘lie’ on the radio dial. Controversial personalities from a host of different backgrounds such as show business, fashion, health and music, among others, accepted the challenge of having their answers analyzed as true or false.

Truth Detector Radio

“This is proprietary and highly innovative content for 89FM, giving our listeners a new kind of entertainment, and bringing them close to what interviewees are thinking,” says Luiz Gustavo Vieira, da 89FM.

“The Truth Detector” blends technology, entertainment and content, offering innovation to agency clients as well as to the end customer, the listener,” says Aricio Fortes, Vice President for Creation at DM9DDB, the agency that created the project.

Truth Detector Radio Credits

The Truth Detector Radio campaign was developed at DM9DDB, Sao Paulo, by chief creative officers Aricio Fortes, Marco Versolato, executive creative director Paulo Coelho, creative directors Leo Macias and Zico Farina, art director Rafael Segri and copywriter Filipe Medici.

Filming was shot by directors Fernando Grostein Andrade and Raoni Rodrigues via Spray Filmes. Sound was produced at B, A, Start!
