Stas Santimov: The Collector

Described as “an experimental hybrid of animation and illustration,” Stas Santimov’s “The Collector” uses looping vignettes of a creepy character to tell its surreal story.

Santimov’s portfolio of animation and illustration work has a hand-wrought, slightly neurotic edge that hearkens back to the glory days Ukrainian animation.

LEGO: Everything is NOT Awesome

UPDATE: This video has been removed from Vimeo, just as it was removed from YouTube prior to that, due to a takedown request from Warner Bros.

What begins as a delightful frozen moment (pardon the pun) in the Arctic turns into an unnatural disaster in this PSA from Greenpeace urging Lego to reconsider its ties to oil giant Shell.

According to Greenpeace:

Shell’s global advertising deal with Lego is part of a carefully thought-out strategy by Shell to buy friends who can make its controversial Arctic drilling plans look acceptable and misleadingly associate it with positive values. Lego is one of the most beloved and admired toy companies in the world, and Shell knows that this deal will not only increase profits, but also improve the reputation of a company known for recklessly threatening the fragile arctic ecosystem.

The spot’s soundtrack is an ironically downtempo version of the infectious “Everything is Awesome” anthem from The Lego Movie.

This Land Is Mine

Against the current backdrop of continuing attacks on Gaza, Nina Paley’s “This Land Is Mine” is the sort of acerbic satire that leaves a mark after its initial sting. It was released over a year ago but has resurfaced as timely commentary, going viral once again.

Technically speaking, it’s a simple animation played out with characters that look as if they were lifted from a Greecian urn. The short is part of a larger project planned by Paley:

I envisioned This Land Is Mine as the last scene of my potential-possible-maybe- feature film, Seder-Masochism, but it’s the first (and so far only) scene I’ve animated. As the Bible says, “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

And if you’re curious about the soundtrack:

This Land Is Mine is a PARODY of “The Exodus Song.” That music was sort of the soundtrack of American zionism in the 1960′s and 70′s. It was supposed to express Jewish entitlement to Israel. By putting the song in the mouth of every warring party, I’m critiquing the original song.

Ostensibly, the short is a critique of Israel’s current stance, but it goes far beyond our present moment in history, critiquing the use of “divinely ordained” force throughout time. It’s a prime example of an argument that can best be made with animation, which allows for the imaginative collapse of divisions in time and place without the expense or production time of live action.

What Kind of Man

It’s a film about balance and contentment. About loving something and having to let it go. What Kind of Man, follows Nate Brinkley, a career football player that gets the life knocked into him. The stakes aren’t high. It’s the everyday moments that take heart and consistency to overcome where I found wisdom and a place to reflect. I’d like to someday be in a place where I’m not just looking for the large obstacles I may need to overcome, but to see the dozen small ones I’m oblivious to. If you find a shred of inspiration or wisdom within, please share. Comments and criticisms welcome.
