Luma Pictures is an artist-run feature film visual effects studio located a block from the beach in Santa Monica, California. We are currently searching for a Jr/Mid System Administrator to fill some of our tech needs.

The position:
You will be working amongst some of the most talented visual effects artists, but in the IT department, in a small team of dedicated employees. Primary tasks of the IT department are keeping the artists working and keeping the pipeline running smoothly, as well as security and scalability implementations.

Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will be able to contribute to many aspects of our production network; including user support, OS management and scripting. The precise tasks can vary depending on what you bring to the table, but some of the outstanding responsibilities are:
-manage and troubleshoot hardware and software issues on user workstations running Mac, Linux and occasionally Windows
-BASH and/or Python scripting to increase production in our area of supporting the artists
-assisting with other items such as power issues, building issues, and other general Issues
-ethernet cabling, power cabling, server setups and take downs, deployments

Qualifications:
-knowledge of OSX, CentOS/RHEL, Fedora including software management and deployment
-knowledge of and some experience with networking concepts and network implementations
-basic knowledge of DNS, LDAP, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SSH, RDP and other common protocols
-proactive, curious, energetic, troubleshooter
-strong desire and ability to learn and apply new knowledge and techniques
-able to lift a server or other similarly weighted item from time to time, independently

Bonuses:

MPC Vancouver: Mid Level Rigging TD

Position Summary:

MPC Vancouver is looking for experienced Film VFX Rigging TDs to join our team in 2011.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Uses an array of commercial and proprietary tools to create character rigs
· Design control mechanism’s that are simple and intuitive
· Work in conjunction with the modelling department and animation department to create photorealistic characters
· Integration of characters and rigs into the production pipeline.
· Create User Interfaces and tools that assist animators
· Works in partnership with R&D programmers, Animators, Lighting TD’s to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard
· Provide support to character rigs throughout production
· Write scripts that automate character production

Requirements:

· Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to character rigging and animation, with a show reel to back this up
· Understanding of puppet and control philosophy
· Excellent understanding of anatomy, volumes and masses, dynamics and character motion
· Experience in feature film/broadcast visual effects production
· Good understanding of the entire visual effects process, from shooting to modelling to texturing, animation and rendering
· Good computer skills, particularly with UNIX/Linux command line interface
· MEL programming essential
· Maya API C++ programming also a plus
· At least 3 years less than 5 year relevant experience.

MPC Vancouver: Mid level Digital Matte Painter/ Environment TD

Position Summary:

With an emphasis on the aesthetics and techniques of photorealistic image creation, the DMP artist will be responsible for painting photo real environments, elements and textures for matching into live action plates or to stand on their own as DMP plates. These Digital Matte Painting’s may also be used in a 3D environment and may be mapped onto 3D objects.

DMPs can be created from scratch or sampled from photos, scanned reference or any other artwork necessary to create new objects or to match the surfaces of existing live action. A strong understanding and sympathy for real world materials and lighting is essential and must be demonstrated in the work on your reel. DMP artists may work closely with the modelling and shading artists and therefore must have a basic knowledge of the practices of each discipline.

· Ability to demonstrate proficiency in creating photo-realistic DMPs required
· Assisting and developing the look of a shot or sequence with the supervision team
· Work alongside the production team to establish schedules and technical requirements
· Works in partnership with shadier developer’s, lighters and compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard

Requirements:

· Proven experience in feature film/broadcast visual effects production
· Thorough working knowledge of Photoshop, with an understanding of Nuke and Maya
· Experience working in a Linux environment
· Strong artistic skills
· A traditional arts background with an emphasis on photo-realistic work and environments would be an advantage
· A good understanding of the entire visual effects process is also needed
· At least 3 to 4 years of relevant experience

Position Summary:

MPC Vancouver are looking for experienced film VFX Compositors to join our team in 2011.

Duties and Responsibilities:
· Tackling the compositing of shots effectively
· Briefing junior compositors when the dividing of shots into tasks (e.g. roto-scoping) is required
· Delivering final shots that are creatively and technically excellent

Requirements:
· Experience with Nuke is essential
· Experience working in a Linux environment
· Good understanding of photography and film, and how the interactions of light, lenses and film emulsions make up the image
· Some understanding of the whole digital film pipeline, from scanner to film recorder

MPC Vancouver : VFX Editorial Assistant

Position Summary:

The VFX Editorial Assistant’s primarily role is to manage all Data I/O for the film Editorial Department. They are responsible for the movement, management and logging of all data to and from the Editorial Department. Within this, support for the VFX Editors in reviews (FCP and 2k), client sessions and reel making are just as important.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Transferring, either manually or automatically, all scans that arrive via FTP or drive on to the system.
· Ensure quality control of all scans that are uploaded to the system by referencing against turnover sheets to see any duplicates, extras or missing incorrect scans and then be able to flag this with the Head of Editorial/Production
· Generate dailies from the scans, and of any reference QuickTime generated internally or delivered from the clients and measure quality control
· Set frames and rename for DI purposes to the convention defined by the client and upload to the FTP checking whether the frames are graded/ungraded dependant upon what is required
· Responsible for uploading all reference material in a suitable format to the system, manually or via the Hub
· Manage all Film data, including setting naming conventions when loading scans, referencing all new shots and scenes
· Archive, delete, copy, move requests will be placed by I/O into the Wrangler queues and managed
· Reel requirements vary but include Monthlies and cutting film department showreels
· Cut final and technical breakdown reels for each show upon completion and see through to the final 2k conform
· Aid or lead in the creation of all other PR materials, podcasts and job specific/bespoke reels
·Creation and management of stockpile of disks on standby for output to CD/DVD’s and assist with client deliveries via disk and tape

Requirements:
· Ability to use and manage Linux, PC Windows and Mac
· Proficiency in Final Cut Pro
· Carry out tasks unsupervised
· Team player, good communication skills, attention to detail, flexible

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Proficiency in creating photo-realistic DMPs
· Assisting and developing the look of a shot or sequence with the supervision team
· Work alongside the production team to establish schedules and technical requirements
· Works in partnership with look-dev artists, lighters and compositors to ensure that the shots are delivered to the very highest standard
· Design and construct Maya and Nuke environment scenes to develop and animate the 3D digital matte paintings, according with the visual and technical standards defined with the Environment Lead
· Check and release the renders, or the Nuke scripts for the comp department to gather
· Regularly release dailies so that progress on a shot can be assessed
· Attend dailies sessions and obtain feedback from supervisors
· Report any day-to-day problems or concerns to the lead Environment TD on the show and any software issues to the appropriate support list
· Work with the Environment HOD to improve the feature set and stability of our tool set
· Improve his or her knowledge and understanding of MPC’s Environment tool set and pipeline
· Needs to be proactive and fairly autonomous
· Act as a mentor to Junior and Mid-Level DMP artists in the department, aiding them in developing their creative and technical abilities and knowledge
· Adequately document Environment practical methods, and ensure that documentation is available centrally for use by the 3D DMP Department as a whole

Requirements:

· Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop
· Knowledge of traditional art skills and techniques: composition, color, lighting; drawing, painting, photography
· Basic understanding of Renderman compliant renders and LINUX
· Deep understanding of UV texturing and camera mapping techniques
· Autodesk Maya: Basic knowledge of hard surface modelling and general software interface
· Good knowledge of The Foundry Nuke (or any other node based compositing software)
· Capacity to work collaboratively with other Matte Painters, Technical Directors and Compositors
· Excellent learning and communication skills
· Strong organizational and follow through skills with the ability to handle complex projects within a fast paced, dynamic, deadline driven environment, according to leads and supervisors expectations
