Light painting effect shots from ‘The Stolen Wings’

THE STOLEN WINGS is my latest short film as director and the 2nd project to use the in-camera technique of light painting to bring its visual effects to life.

Short Fantasy Film – ‘The Stolen Wings’

THE STOLEN WINGS is a short fantasy film with lots of in-camera visual effects. Shot on location in Co Wexford, Ireland, the film is about a babysitter who makes up an elaborate fairy tale to keep a little girl entertained… but is she all she seems?

Comments welcome

PFTrack Export Issues

Alright, got a weird one here.

So we’re undistorting some DPX plates in PFTrack, and wanting to re-distort them in Nuke with 3D elements included, using the STMap method. Pretty standard stuff, and we’ve got the workflow down, but for some reason PFTrack seems to be spitting out 8 bit images.

To explain: We create a UV ramp in Nuke (oversized to match the undistorted plates), render it to an EXR, and import it into PFTrack. Then we apply our inverted distortion coefficients to the ramp, and it all looks good. Up until this point, everything is going swimmingly. However, when we try to export this re-distortion ramp from PFTrack to an EXR to apply it in Nuke, the whole thing goes tits-up.

The EXR that comes out of PFTrack claims to be float; the metadata says it’s float, Photoshop says it’s float, but the pixel data is definitely 8 bit. As a consequence, trying to use it as any kind of STMap input results in horrible blocking artifacts.

So my question is, basically, is there a way to get PFTrack to process/export at anything higher than 8 bit? Anyone else every run into this issue?

Tip for reducing smoke a video

I have this shot that has a lot of smoke floating in it in some parts of the picture. Any tips on how to reduce it a little?

Custom hot keys Nuke v5.2v1 Mac OS X

Does anyone know how one can assign custom short cuts in Nuke. As I understand it, you have to modify / create a menu.py text document. However I can’t seem to find any instructions which relate specifically to short cut modification.

I simply wish to assign ~ or shift+~ to open the Node Graph.

Here’s hoping the Foundry implement a GUI short cut modifier in the not too distant future.

Thank you for any help,

Anthony
