The Newbster! *Help Needed*

Hey guys! I’m new on here but already like the way the site is set up and how helpful you all are. I am of course trying to get started in compositing but literally have no idea where to start. I currently do film work for the Army. I am a camera man, audio, lighting, edit (Final Cut Pro), motion graphics (Apple Motion) and do some other misc. tasks. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good "curriculum" to follow in order to get a good knowledge of compositing and doing VFX. I think my number one goal is to learn Adobe Photoshop as it seems to be the backbone to all visual work. Please let me know if this is where you think I should start and concentrate first. Any and all advice would be extremely helpful to me.

Also, is compositing something you need to go to school for or is it something you can pick up as you go? I would rather not spend the 60k on a degree but I guess if I would have to… crap.

Thanks guys! :splat:

Escape Studios

Hi guys,
i’m moving to london from italy at the beginning of 2010 and i’m really interested in applying at the compositing course at Escape Studios.
Does someone know anything about them?
Is it a good training with good work opportunities?
Thank you!

motion vectors

Hello everybody!
trying to use motion vector pass I’ve got some troubles. Integrated default vector blur has not enough quality http://foto.mail.ru/mail/mr.tsoi/1/2.html
for instance plugin "real smart motion blur" using the same technics in other application has suitable quality http://foto.mail.ru/mail/mr.tsoi/1/3.html
So I’ve dounloaded LM_2DMV.gizmo from www.highend3d.com that gives me this result http://foto.mail.ru/mail/mr.tsoi/1/4.html
as you can see vectors interpretated correctly directions but has sharpen edges
How I can debug this?
thank you

Renderman for Maya LWF

Hi,i just wondering if anyone know how to implement linear workflow in renderman for maya

I have control over the exposure in normal rgb but if i create some channels to outpur exr
the exposure control can´t be added

I know that i need to remove gamma from all textures but i don´t know how to output the image in linear space.

I import the exr in nuke and i have to add a colorspace node after all the suffles and corrections.

Is it unprofessional…

To hand write on a DVD reel?

Personally I hate dvd reels and think they are outdated and look like crap compared to a well encoded H.264. I send a link to my site because the quality is great and it is set to stream well on a decent connection. So why do companies like dvds? Sure you can pop it in the breakroom and let everyone watch them in fast forward…wonderful…why not still ask for VHS then? I care about the quality of the work I show a potential employer..and DVDs look aweful! I burned one today and after looking at the video on my site I felt it was insulting to have something that looked so incredibly mortifying!

So my question is, if a company REQUIRES you to submit your reel in a sub-par format that is DVD does it really matter if you hand write your info on the disc? Seeing as how they don’t care about quality to begin with.

I would almost be more willing and happy to hand someone a cd with an H.264 video on it (maybe even a higher bitrate than on my site) to be able to present it at least in a sharper and more crisp picture. But for some reason they want horrible blurry footage.

I guess I find it funny that I have actually seen a company write…send us a dvd, you should respect your work to be viewed in a format better than a postage stamp! And this was recently! What are you kidding me? Is it that they don’t understand compression and think its 10 years ago or have they not updated their site in 10 years!

I present above dvd quality, 480 24p footage on my site. I abhor DVD.

converting .*exr files via nuke

hi all

I am using Nuke to convert *.exr files (from VRay) to scanline.

so as you would I set up my write node all channels, set my compression, rename the file adding an sl to the name and away we go.

now I have two problems that I run into.

firstly on occasion nuke refuses to read these files and the read node error out..

secondly if for example i exited the comp and later went back to that comp to do further work, when it is re open I get the below error for the write node that did the conversion, this is with all compression types for *.exr files

"write1.file_type : Bad value for compression : LZW"

am running mac osx 10.5.7 and nuke 5.1v5
