How vfx is shot

With a very thin line separating a real scene from a vfx scene, many times it is really difficult to say which was done in vfx and how. I have visited some good sites which give the ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots of vfx scenes, but these are at a very high and professional level. It rarely explains one how this was shot (exept for a few ‘making of …’ movies).

When you work in a production environment, you are automatically exposed to these and pick up your strings right away. But for an ametuer and freelancer, it becomes very difficult to get the right scene and to open it up to understand the ‘how’.

Any suggestions???

Choosing RAM DIMMS for Fusion/Compositing.

Hi.

What do I look for when upgrading DDR2 RAM in my workstation? Faster RAM or more RAM? For instance 8GB of PC8500 or 16GB of PC6400? Any other specifications I have to look out for?

Movimento or alternatives?

Sine Autodesk acquired Realviz, have they kept Movimento going? There’s still a page on the Autodesk site;

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet…12&id=11868979

but the program doesn’t appear in their product lists?

If it’s dead, is there a decent alternative, off the shelf?

Valentino: The Last Emperor

I guess I sorta slept on this past festival season so I might be behind on this one– but it looks like a must see.

Valentino: The Last Emperor is a feature-length film on the legendary designer Valentino Garavani in the wake of his exit in 2008 from the company he founded in Rome more than 45 years ago. Produced and directed by Matt Tyrnauer, Special Correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine, the film is an intimate, engaging and very funny fly-on-the-wall exploration of the singular world of one of Italy’s richest and most famous men. The film documents the colorful and dramatic closing act of Valentino’s celebrated career, tells the story of his extraordinary life and work, and also explores the larger themes affecting the fashion business today. But at the heart of the film is the unique relationship between Valentino and his business partner and companion of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti.”

Not really sure how to classify this percussive amalgamation from London based Friend, but I hope it signifies the ushering in of more music that makes me yearn for cherry blossom lined streets and Pocky. “Doki” is from Friend’s debut EP “Shima”.
