Questions for Pro-Colorists
Posted in: The PadIt would be my fantasy come true if I ever got a job at ILM. (besides the other fantasy of me & 2 girls on a rock, but that’s another story.)
Anyway, I am very confused about the big studio workflow.
For example, Once a film is complete ( editing, vfx added etc..)
It now needs to be color corrected ( Adjust contrast, make blue eyes bluer, change color of a car, etc)
So my questions are:
1, How many colorists are assigned to the film?
2. Do they break it up into scenes ? (John does the rain scenes, Bob does the night scene, etc)?
3.How much time does it take to for the colorists to complete any given film. Or should I say, How much time does a Big Studio want you to take to finish your scenes?
The reason for my curiosity is because I have been working on a 45 minute
Indy film for 9 months. (don’t laugh)
My job is to do everything except editing. CG planes added, sky replacements, wire & track removals, day 4 night conversions, 3D tracking, 2D tracking, Stabilizing, color correction, and the list goes on… etc…..etc…
So I find myself asking….is this normal? Am I slow as Sh_t?
My last Day 4 night conversion (which was 8 clips) took 6 weeks!
Keep in mind, they broke every rule. Direct sun on the talent, camera pointed at blown out sky, grainy,etc..
So, I would love to hear from the pros,
Thanks,
Lou
