Learning VFX for a Director?
Posted in: The PadI want to direct films that involve heavy VFX. Pirates of the Caribbean, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, How the Grinch Stole Christmas… etc. Adventure/Fantasy films.
Anyway, I’ve always had an interest in learning visual effects but I wanted to get some feedback from the community…
Is learning VFX and starting a career as a Visual Effects Artist be worth it for an aspiring Director? Or should I just focus my energy on writing and directing some low budget indie films to try to get attention from the big guys?
I’ve noticed a trend in how many effects artists are becoming directors (Eric Brevig, Stefen Fangmeier, Neil Blomkamp, Garath Edwards).
If I was to go the low budget indie route, whats the best genre to start in if I want to get to Fantasy films one day? Fantasy in itself is a bigger budget beast, but I feel like starting in comedy or drama would be like taking the rocky road uphill… is there a better start?
