My 2010 demo reel
Posted in: Community Critiques & ReviewsMy name is Luke Pammant, I’m a student at the Art Instiute of Colorado. I found out about the CG Whiz competition on the Escape studio’s website and figured I’d should give it a shot. I’ve spent a ton of hours of the past 2 weeks getting this reel together. The dinosaur, hand disintegration and the car shot were all done in those 2 weeks too. I plan on using this as a professional reel when I graduate in March of next year so I could do with all the critique’s I can get.

Unlike it´s many predecessors, Scott´s movie is not a light hearted chronicle of the ‘merrymen’ outsmarting the sheriff of Nottingham but is a gritty action packed period piece. The amazing special effects used in the making of this film combined with an original tale and notable acting take Scott´s adaptation to a much higher level than any previous rendition.

Centurion seems to have been well received….lots of fight scenes and garish blood spiced up with a terrifically staged ambush-with-rolling-
fireballs that seems to have ticked all the boxes. An Epic without the Epic
budget of Gladiator some may say. A distinctive visual experience that makes for a very strong anti-war statement even though it is gratuitously violent at the same time.

This film seems to have had mixed reviews some hinted at the fact that it jumped on the coat tails of movies such as Lord Of The Rings but didn’t do such a good job. Other critics remarked that the CGI monsters were too complicated and with simplification would have been more frightening. A remake is always a tough thing to succeed at and especially as this is such a classic story as old as the hills. The 3D element didn’t help either and many reviewers advised the public not to waste their money on the extra entrance fee because the last minute choice to make the film in 3D caused the badly choreographed battle scenes to be difficult to follow, making the viewer dizzy.

However, he’s not the only superhero out there – the fearless and highly-trained father-daughter crime-fighting duo, Big Daddy and Hit Girl have been slowly but surely taking down the criminal empire of local Mafioso, Frank D’Amico. And, as Kick-Ass gets drawn into their no-holds-barred world of bullets and bloodletting with Frank’s son, Chris, now reborn as Kick-Ass’s arch-nemesis, Red Mist – the stage is set for a final showdown between the forces of good and evil – in which the DIY hero will have to live up to his name. Dave Lizewski is a social misfit, a natural-born geek, a true nobody at his high school and he is invisible to all the girls. He has two good friends, Toddy and Marty, and spends his time at the local comic book store. He is in love with a girl called Katie Deauxma but she barely notices his existence. One day, after a conversation about superheroes at the local comic book café, Dave and Toddy are robbed and Dave decides that he is going to be a superhero and fight crime. He orders a Diving wet suit off the internet and starts training to become a real crime fighter.
After a few weeks of training, Dave sees the two men who robbed him trying to break into a car so Dave puts on his suit and confronts them. He tries to fight the men but ends up being brutally stabbed; and as he stumbles around after the thugs run away, he is hit by a car. Clinging to life in the back of an ambulance, he begs the paramedic to hide his suit. As he ends up arriving at the hospital completely naked, rumours start up around town about what exactly happened to him before his accident happened.
A few months later, Dave is almost as good as new. He is full of metal plates and has numerous frayed nerve endings which grant him a higher pain threshold. He returns to school and is surprised to find that the true love of his life, Katie, is now talking to him. His friend Marty explains that Katie likes lame ducks and that due to rumours following the accident, the entire school now thinks that Dave is a gay prostitute. Despite the setbacks, Dave is still determined to be a superhero and sets up a MySpace account so that people can contact him and give him cases. One night, while looking for a cat, Dave fights off three attackers beating a defenceless man in front of a diner. Some of the diner patrons record the fight on video and posts it on YouTube. The power of social networking kicks in, and Daves alter ego, Kick Ass, becomes an internet phenomenon.
Thus Dave Lizewski embarks on a life as a super-hero, albeit a super-hero with no powers. His life changes forever as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, embattles an array of violent characters, and encounters other vigilantes in the shape of an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo: Hit Girl; and her father, Big Daddy.
Kick-Ass was heralded as a humourous, entertaining, rollercoaster of a superhero movie ……. with a big difference. Have you seen Kick-Ass? did you agree with all the hype and the positive reviews? post below with your critique, we would love to hear your thoughts.
But, the geek in me wanted to check it out frame by frame to see how the big players do it and I was shocked to find a few very dodgy frames. Now as far as I know it’s still in post production and these things could be ironed out, but why include them if they’re not perfect?
Check out the part where the snake attacks Harry starting at 2545 and there seems to be some bad work there. 2566, 67, and 68 are strange and 2576 and 2580 are particularily bad.
When you watch it at normal speed it’s not really noticable but it’s definately there and that was the one shot that didn’t sit well with me on the first watch.
Is this a gross oversight or something that still needs to be repaired?
Hope I don’t get anyone in trouble, but as a huge fan of the series I’d want to see it done right.
I am new to the website and VFX in general. I am actually working on a project for school where I need to create a smoke trail. I have my first round of testing pretty close to done, but I need a critique on it. What I am trying to achieve and I am finding it difficult to do so, is to make the trail go on for longer but with out it dissipating to fast.
Here is the effect i am going for it starts at 3:49 where the smoke trail comes out from voldemort
