Buck Dews it Again

buckdew

Buck is back again with another installment for their Mountain Dew campaign. This one brings us through a brief history of the product as we follow a Dew man journey through time. Although the concept has become a bit used and abused, Buck dusts it off with their own personal style.

Utilizing cel animation on top of live action and 3d models for reference, Buck brought in Brooklyn based animation house Augenblick Studios to help out with the extensive cel work that needed to be done.

Here is what Orion Tait, CD at Buck NYC had to say about the process:

Footage was used as an animation guide for the main character. Augenblick studios animated the main character,
and our team did the rest (as a hybrid of 2d cel and 3d animation). For the character, we shot Thomas on a treadmill and constructed an edit. We then illustrated style-frames based on stills from that edit (which you can see up on the site).

The edit and style frames then went to Aaron and his team for cel animation. They are very traditional in their approach, which you can really see from their work on superjail. They used the footage as reference to layout key frames, and then started closing the gap with in-betweens, until they got to a fluid 30fps animation. This allowed them to nail the timing and loose look of the illustration and introduce the morphing animation, all while maintaining nice fluid, stylish animation that most rotoscoping lacks.

With every new project Buck releases, they establish themselves as the masters of the pop illustration domain as well as a studio with a knack for high quality production.

The Creative Work Of Ian Kim

iankim

Ian Kim has updated his site with some awesome new work, and we’re extremely happy that he did. Ian’s work is truly inspiring. His abilities take him to a vast range of styles and aesthetics. According to Ian, “The great thing about motion graphics is that every project requires a different style.”

It’s evident from his portfolio that he’s flexible and adaptable to whatever the project at hand may be.  His attention to detail, beautiful use of colors, and intense line work really set his illustrations apart from the norm. Not to mention his nearly perfect attention to perspective and proportions, an area that can be scary for many designers in this industry.

Ian now spends his days rockin’ with the crew from Buck LA. I had a moment to catch up with Ian and ask him about his process.  Here’s what he had to say:

My creative process begins with drawing. Drawing has always been my most immediate way of expressing ideas. I’ve always been into comics and movies, and I think their influence on my work is really evident.

I studied film in school, so with my background in storytelling, I like to think how best to tell a story visually. Since I’ve been working professionally, most of my work is digital, but I love working traditionally. I usually draw everything on paper and try to incorporate traditional elements when I am working on the computer.

I think its great to hear that more artists today want to use a tactile and traditional approach in this digital world. Makes me want to get my pencils out and draw!  Beautiful work, Ian!

Buck’s Cure for Boiron

ossc_buck

Buck’s new spot for flu remedy Oscillococcinum (try saying that with the flu), yet again showcases their mastery of style and catering technical ability. Beautifully crafted environments and character design gush painterly details and blur the line between CG and hand-rendered nicely.

Also worth a gander is their, impressive as usual, R&D and accompanying print artwork for the campaign.

Buck’s Cure for Boiron

Merry Christmas to you
