what to put in a VFX editor’s reel?

One of the basic fundamental rules, if not the golden rule, of demo reels is to not use someone else’s work. We all know this. So, what can a VFX editor use in their reel when everything visual in a clip is actually done by a team of others (layout artists, 3D artists, lighting and compers…)?

As a VFX editor all my work, everything I contribute to a project, is pretty much unseen in the final product. So what can I use that is both practical and ethical?

I would love to hear your thoughts, especially from people who are in the position where they evaluate demo reels.

I originally come from a picture (video) editorial background in broadcast and indy film, but for past while been in a fulltime VFX job and find that I don’t know what I have to actually show for it (as far as my reel is concerned).

The Men Who Stare At Goats

Just saw Men Who Stare At Goats this weekend….and there was some AMAZING VFX in that film. They took Clooney back 20 years miraculously. Did anyone on here work on the Clooney digital rejuvination? If so can you shed any light on the process? It was the best I’ve seen yet!

Congrats to anyone that worked on it…great job!

My new 3D-Rig

Hello Community,
first sorry about my bad english.
It´s online: my next version of a beamsplitter 3d-rig 2.0 beta.
Have a look at:

http://www.stereoscopic.25frames.de

You´ll see the rig with and without a case.
At this time, the option for rotating the beamsplitter isn´t included, this will be finish at Christmas.
The next version (3.0?) is motorized.
For the preview on the field i´m using a modified videoglass (for every eye a little lcd-monitor, headmounted).

Compositing pros / cons for student project

Hi guys, first post here!

Me and a friend are trying to build a compositor for a project on our computer animation course, and we just wanted to ask you all what you like and dislike about your current compositors? Anything that could be improved, or cool UI features you like, that kind of thing?

Thanks,
Stevie

Is this interactive video object manipulation interesting for VFX peeps?

Stabliize,Paint, unstablize…Question

Hi,
Ok, I have a question that has been driving me nuts for weeks.
Its the old….stabilize,paint unstablize trick.

From what I understand, one technique would be:
Stablize a moving shot, do your wire removal or paint, and then put back the motion.
Ok, So you would…track the shot, (now you have "tracking data")
then use the "tracking data" and reverse or stabilize the shot.
Now the shot is "stable" and now you (for example) paint a patch of grass to cover up the wire .
Then you unstablize and well-la…a perfect wire removal.

So here is my question:
What’s the difference between doing it that way .OR…applying the "tracking data" you got when tracking, and apply it to the grass patch?

I don’t understand the difference?
Thank you,
Lou
