3D tracking device?

Hello everyone,

I have been think about this for a while now and wanted to get your thoughts on this:

Would it be possible to build some kind of device that you can strap to the camera and that records the full 3D motion of the camera?

I know that devices like the iphone contain an accelerometer that can record at least the rotation of the device, although I think the data of such a recording is not accurate enough for our purpose (for a 4k picture I think you would, depending on the lens, need a accuracy of 0.005 degree). But are there accelerometer like devices that are more accurate? Also is there something that can record the movement to a accuracylevel that would be useful?

On the other hand I think a rough 3D track of the shot (by that I mean a path that is not spot on, say for some 1-5% off, created by an iphone app or something you strap to the camera) could be very useful information for the starting point of the full spot on 3D tracking of the shot.

What is everyone thought on this? If it would be possible it would be a great tool!

Anxious to hear from you all!

Greetings!
Kasper

Workstation layout issues

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for some help regarding workstation layout, and minimizing an overuse injury I’ve sustained.

I work for a TV station as a broadcast designer, and since being here have been working all day, everyday at the desk.

I pushed it too hard and now have a neck/back overuse injury relating to posture, and have a compo case running, seeing physio etc.

Biggest problem we have is fixing the workstation so as to minimise stress on my body (for everyones benefit) and as use the tablet alot, the mouse also, and obviously the keyboard, it’s hard finding that balance.

So here is an image of my workstation (it’s always this clean, honest ;))

I’m a right handed pen user, have switched the mouse to my left, and use AE and 3D apps mostly, so left hand on keyboard for modifier keys etc.

This drawer we have had fit is causing me to have to lift my left arm all the time and is causing new stress.

HR is suggesting we go with a cutdown keyboard (no number pad) and have stuff (L to R) mouse, keyboard, tablet

Any suggestions on a better layout? Any tips or advice?

Thanks alot!

Dan

Research: The past, present and future of the VFX industry

Hi all!

I am currently studying for a bachelor in Digital Visual Effects at Teesside University in Middlesbrough, UK. As part of my final year, I’m taking a course module called Studio Practice & Business where we are supposed to research the business side of the industry we’re hoping to get into.

In my case, I’m looking at the state of the VFX industry and how it has changed over the past five to ten years. In particular, I am looking at:

1. How the VFX industry have changed over the past five to ten years (some numbers would be great, but trends are perfectly ok):
– Size of VFX facilities
– Number of facilities
– Size of budgets
– Average number of shots
– Location of VFX facilities
– Size of VFX workforce
– Etc.

2. How technology has changed the industry in recent years, such as the introduction of the RED camera, the move to stereoscopic workflows, how cheaper equipment allows for smaller more specialised companies etc.

3. Preproduction vs postproduction. Are VFX facilities more involved in preproduction now compared to earlier and if that is the case, why?

4. The industry in the UK compared to the US and/or the rest of the world

5. How VFX companies promotes themselves to clients

6. What changes we are likely to see in the VFX industry in the not too distant future

7. Ways for a graduate student to get a job in the industry today (runner, roto artist, match mover, etc.)

To answer these questions I both need to do primary and secondary research. Secondary meaning research via the internet, publications, libraries etc. Primary meaning some sort of interview (face to face, telephone, Skype, email, forums).

I by no means expect people to do the research for me, but if anyone would have the time to either talk a little about the state of the industry (be it bullet points on the list above or not) or point me in the direction of some sources, it would be greatly appreciated.

New technology

Hey guys!

I just saw this video and I am still baffled by it!

Very cool stuff, cant wait for it to become a reality (hopefully)

And even more importantly, how do you think this could be translated to the VFX world?

What happened to Foundry’s Forge application?

Anyone know what happened to Foundry’s dust and dirt removal software Forge?

Last I remember version 2 was released in Aug 2008 and now it’s gone from their website "Products" menu.

http://www.vfxtalk.com/forum/foundry…ed-t16220.html

I’m wondering if another company bought the technology and no announcement was made.

Version 1.1 v3 is still available in the FTP archive for some reason along with its manual.

Pro Juice TV Series – We want your work!!

Hey Everyone,

We’re going into Pre-Production on the first TV series of Pro Juice and we need your help. We might be based in Melbourne but we’re looking to the world for both content and broadcasters. Check out below how you can be involved.

Animators/Designers/Editors

We’re looking for 12 animated stings to use throughout the series. What are stings? Well they can be anything you like. But basically they’re short (2-7 second) animations that we can use between segments to add some dynamism to the show and to show off the creative work of all you ‘guerrilla’ producers out there. We don’t mind if its 2D, 3D, stop motion or cut-out animation. So long as its original, fresh and very cool.

Music Videos

We’re on the lookout for 6 music videos to feature in the series. So if you’ve produced/directed/edited/animated a great music video lately, we want to see it. We want videos with great stories, striking visual effects, simple ideas or one-shot wonders.

Short Films / Experimental Works

We’re also on the lookout for 6 short films or experimental videos to feature in the series. So if you’ve produced/directed/edited/animated a great video lately, we want to see it. We want videos with great stories, striking visual effects, simple ideas or one-shot wonders…

What Else Do You Need To Know

For all the info you need and to check out Pro Juice online videos check out here:
