What makes it so great?
Animators love the culture of collaboration and openness. Studio has upped releases from two a year to five every two years. Coming in 2010: How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek Forever After, and Megamind.

The volcano issue

Yowsa! How many of you people are being affected by the happenings on Iceland? I am myself going to London to work next week, but it’s looking…not too good. Hopefully he falls back to sleep though.

For those who haven’t heard; Volcano on Iceland=Tons of ashes=planes can’t fly properly=we then get a guru meditation!

difference – make sure your web compression is tidy before uploading. . .

difference

Another ridiculous one I decided to make while checking h264 encoded versions of renders in QuickTime Player 7 for compression differences before uploading them to the web.

Lines up QuickTime Player 7 windows, and automatically cycles between them so you can easily check for visual differences.

Enjoy.

Anyone here apply to the Vizlab? (TAMU)

I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything about decisions. I’m pretty much going insane waiting for the mail each day, staring at my inbox, and checking the online application status.

The weirdest thing you’ve ever comped

Title says it all. Could be anything. Anything you were required to comp, key, roto, model, animate, etc. that made you have one of those "wtf" moments while working on it.

I’ll get things started by sharing mine. So far, the weirdest thing was I had to key out two transvestites on a green screen, and comp them in a wedding chapel. But they were fighting with each other with major bitchy attitudes*. By far one of the weirdest things I’ve been asked to comp (so far…. haha).

Curious to see what others have had to do in the past. Looking forward to the replies. 😎

*note: they had stubble, poorly slapped on make up and lipstick and mascara. *shudder*

Animation Final Year Project help

Hey guys, sorry if this is in the wrong place, but i wanted to reach out to everyone involved in the vfx industry, not just animators… (you’ll see why in a minute).

Basically i have made a short video of some animations that i would like you to compare. there are two short jump-kick animations, and a couple of questions.

It would be GREAT if you could help… as it’ll give me a lot more to speak about with first hand feedback from people IN the relevant industry.

So here it is…

Please leave answers either in here, or in video comments.

(sorry if any of this is against rules, i don’t think it is? )

Thankyou muchly! 🙂

Automated Roto Is Upon Us

Well maybe the title is a little strong. But, the new roto brush in After Effects CS5 is certainly impressive.

Looking forwards to giving it a go. See how effective it is in reality.

Skip to about 22:30 to see his final matte from the tool. The edges defo need some work but the hair detail is pretty good.

Certainly seems good enough to create quick grading masks.

projector_v2 – mac os x app to easily create and change project folders and icons

I got sick and tired of duplicating template projects and messing around with icons after the fact. So I made this little applescript app to help with the process:

There is a demo video on the site. Let me know if its useful!

Automatic Stereoscopic Conversion plugin…

I’m trying to decide if I should continue development on this plugin I’ve been messing around with. Now, I don’t really like the whole idea of studios rushing 3d conversions at the last minute to get on the 3D bandwagaon (Clash). but at the same time, I can’t help but think there are lots of people out there that would want to use this tool.

I attacehd some test renders of the quality. Keep in mind these were generated automatically. No roto, or manual positioning of layers in Z space. Do you guys think there’s a demand for this? Curious to hear people’s opinion about it. Thanks
