best and worst vfx/animation companies

Hi I was just wondering what are the worst and best companies to work for? I have one company in particular, Stereo D. At my last gig, some former artists that worked there said they were bad to work for. They said some of the supervisors had ego trips. I was just wondering if anyone had similar experiences, or know of any other "terrible" studios. Sometimes its not all about the money. It is about a pleasant work environment where you work on awesome projects, meet new colleagues, and not have to work 14 hour days! That is just my opinion. Anyone feel free to share your two cents on this matter.

The Price of Prestige

VFX Soldier put up a good post about the price of prestige in vfx. Give it a read here!

Quote:

The visual effects business is one of the most bizarre professional industries to work in because some of the most prestigious and successful companies in our industry are the ones that pay the lowest.

In my last article I wrote about vfx salaries at many facilities and how I found it a bit odd that companies like Pixar Animation paid salaries sometimes 20-30% lower than other facilities.

I also wrote about how many new artists in the industry work unpaid internships and some are even willing to pay to work and get some experience. Some vfx facilities prey on that notion while others prey on the notion that they are the most prestigious place to work and therefore you should take a pay cut for the honor.

I call this the price of prestige.

Help needed – Facial Expressions / Talking

Hi,

We are at the end stage of our Pizza Cats project. There are about 5 shots left that need to be done. Im not really an animator. There is a shot wheren the characters looks at the camera and winks. When I animate it it just looks to static. I want to ask if someone wants to help me out a bit. It should not take to much time. I’ve done some preperations to the model already.

I really hope someone wants to help. So we can finnaly round up the project.

Here is a still from the short.

Thanks in advance,
Maarten

i know its silly….

Guys i am an artist with 3 years of exprience in vfx, i know that i can rip the shots from DVD for my showreel but i am not at all interested to do that, i have fallen for a shot in a French movie, so my query is can i use that single shot and work on it to show my skills and add a huge watermark of that movie name on that shot with credits. Is it legal doing this…I know asking this is a bit silly but before i go ahead i wanted few suggestions of experienced artists. Thanks in advance

BC High Technology Professional

Hey all,

Just wondering how many vfx artists are stationed in Vancouver and if so, how many of you have come across the "High technology professional" tag in their contract. Seems like this only favors the studio, artists get overtime after 10 hours. From my understanding some studios in the Vancouver area are using this classification and some aren’t. Any input to clarify or to hear your thoughts about this act would be appreciated.

Cinema 4D’s PyroCluster Revealed
http://www.cmivfx.com/productpages/p…uster_Revealed

PyroCluster is the volumetric shading module for Cinema 4d. Pyrocluster enables photorealistic volumetric effects such as fire and smoke, as well as Hollywood-style explosions (think gasoline bomb) and stylized science (and science fiction) ‘energy’ effects like force fields, beams of electricity, and wormholes. It is a fully featured, yet extremely easy to use module, and it is fully integrated within Cinema 4d, unlike many of the other third party volumetric plug-ins available.

Deep Versatility
Learn about the volume tracer and a few ways to drastically speed your Pyrocluster renders. Delve into each of the different tabs within the Pyrocluster materials: control puff radius, luminosity, color, and alpha within the age effects, distance effects, and cylindrical distance effects. Learn the basics of the illumination and shadows tabs to help control light as well as self, cast, and received shadows. Use the noise tab to create an infinite number of different ‘shapes’ of noise, and of course animate them. Combining the ‘gradient’ style of animation with keyframing, Pyrocluster is incredibly versatile and powerful, allowing many different solutions and ways of working that with a little practice, anyone can become very comfortable with.

Time is of the Essence
An important concept within many different modules is to modify presets. By taking a preset as a starting point, it becomes infinitely easier to achieve a given look, style, or interaction and can save significant setup time, and in the fast paced (and getting faster) worlds of visual effects and motion graphics, these time savings can be invaluable. Combined with thinking particles, the sky is the limit when it comes to interaction, level of detail, and realism, so if you’re new to Cinema 4d, or Pyrocluster, or have been looking to add an easy-to-use volumetrics module to your quiver of skills, this video is most definitely for you!
