Good College for Animation & Visual Effects

Hello everyone!

Currently a Jr. in high school, 73 Average, 1600 on first SAT (Will be taking a second one) and I’m interested upon getting into Animation and Visual effects. I have grown to love movies and the CGI work that goes into them. It’s something that makes me want to do and look upon my finished work and be proud about.

I was very interested in the Academy of Art University BUT it’s in California…:(

Yes, I can’t go to a college that’s across the country.
I’m currently in New York and my parents want me to go somewhere that’s in driving distance. I don’t want to stay in NY but I can’t go somewhere that requires a plane ride away.

So I’m in need of help from you guys.

I’m looking for a good school that doesn’t really look into my grades for requirements of getting into the school, like Academy of Art which look for students that have potential and has a GREAT program for Animation & Visual Effects.

Plan on taking a program for it and then graduating and working at Disney, Industrial Light or some company that works into CGI for movies.

So if you guys can help recommend a good college that I might be able to get into with a great program for animation and visual effects. It would be great! Again, It can’t be somewhere far away.

:thanks:

Is it possible to get workpermit in US after shortterm courses???

I am actually planning to join Gnomon or Escape Studios(LA) short term composting course which will be for about 3 Months.

But what are the chances of getting to stay there after the course because from what I have heard most of the jobs is LA are contract basis or freelance.

So,how can I get a work permit if I am freelancing other than marrying a US girl:p.

Please, could some body throw some light on this issue.

Thanks

Question about the workflow of a Roto/Cleanup artist

I’m a student working my way to becoming a Compositor. And as such, I’m building my showreel aimed at big companies such as MPC or Framestore etc, aiming to start in Roto/Cleanup.

My question was in regards to what a Roto artist is allowed to do in order to pull a matte. For example, if there is a section of the footage that can easily be luma keyed, is he allowed to do so? It’s just that I’ve seen a few compositors getting snotty about roto artists cutting corners like that, and wondered if a roto artist really is just living and dying by the bezier, when some more creative ways of pulling a matte may well work.

Just wanted to know so that I don’t do roto shots on my showreel using ‘shortcuts’, if they’re not encouraged.

Best job for me?

So here is my situation. I want to write/direct scifi/fantasy adventure films one day. I am still very young (21) and I’m not sure how to best get to my final destination. I’m hoping some of the wise elders of reddit could help me out with some advice.

While I work on my writing (and hope to get one bought one day) I need a job to pay the bills and whatnot. I am in a situation right now where I have a job that pays decently but I hate what I’m doing there and would rather be working in films/tv to some extent. So I am looking for something new, I have the luxury of being able to apply for jobs (and train myself in the meantime) without being rushed.. so I’d like to stay away from jobs as a waiter, retail, etc. I would prefer to be where I am now, not enjoying what I do than in a retail place… if that makes sense.

I also plan on making my own shorts and whatnot while I write, but

I’d like a job that is in the film business and might be a backdoor way into the career I want. For the record, I love animation and visual effects as well, so those aren’t just options that I am throwing in there, I do have a passion for it.

Some of the jobs I have thought about are:

  • Visual Effects Artist — Being in VFX I could do the effects for my own films, get to know some artists and work my way up in that field. I have noticed a trend in a lot of VFX Supervisors moving over to directing. Neil Blomkamp, Eric Brevig, Stefen Fangmeier and the Strause Brothers to name a few.
  • Animator — Some of the best directors out there came up in animation before jumping into live action (Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, Robert Rodriguez) and being able to do an animated film by myself would be cool someday, and relatively cheap to do. Almost all directors of animated features came from an animation background.
  • Editor — I’ve seen a lot of editors making the jump to directing, and it’s working with story as well. Plus, getting to network with producers and directors would be helpful as well.
  • Development Assistant / General Assistant — I have to be honest, I don’t know much about this type of position. But I do know that it gets you reading scripts and doing coverage, which can never be bad… and meeting a lot of people.
  • Writers Assistant — Working on a TV show in a writers room would definitely teach me a lot, and I heard that they often give their assistants a freelance assignment once a season when they have to.

I am also open to other ideas, I’m sure I have missed some good opportunities. I just need a fallback, you know? Just not sure what fallback to go with as I’m fairly new to this industry.

tl;dr: I am looking for a new job that I’d like to lend itself to a feature film writing/directing career down the road. What is the best job for me while I write my own scripts, direct my own shorts but need income to pay the bills. What job would you recommend I go after, given that I have the luxury of time and don’t need to rush into anything, and I have a passion for visual effects and animation?

Jr. Compositor Commercial. Need Help !

Hi,

i would really appreciate your input. I have 1 year experience working basically as a 2D Generalist for TV. Did everything from Roto/Paint to 3D Tracking and Set Extensions. (Did everythin in After Effects) I really enjoyed the work, despite the long hours etc.

Unfortunately there was no real possibility for growth, so i quit. I maybe able to get into a big commercial facility as a jr. compositor. I have the chance to learn Nuke/Flame amongst other things.
My problem is i do not know anything about commercial work and i´m a bit sceptical as i really enjoyed doing tv/film stuff. On the other hand this seems to be a big chance for me and at the end its compositing is it? I don´t know, with tv/film work i can really imaging what im doing as there are plenty making ofs etc. I kinda associate commercials more with motion design and 3D. I´m aware that companys like mpc/the mill to features as well as commercials, this job though would be in a "commercials only" company.

Is there a big difference doing commercials? I guess the pace is different, but is there anything major, or anything specifically to consider ? I would really look forward to any kind of insight and pointers. I feel a bit lost at the moment and need to decide in the next few days.

Thank you for your time.

how to create stingy fluid?

hi there.

i`m new here and this post maybe wrong here but
i want to ask how to create stingy fluid.

i`m creating smoke using maya fluid and some smoke works good.
but oneday , the director came and saw my smoke , and order me:

"top edge of this smoke on crashing effect should be stingy."

if you cannot understand above , it may be may expression is bad or something.
to make explanation short , ordered smoke is this youtube of 0:09-0:15 ;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IJY2…eature=related

i`ve never seen stingy smoke effect like this on real smoke.
i`ve thought that animetic smoke does not exist on real .
so althought i could not create stingy smoke by maya fluid , anyone would not blame me.
because maya fluid is physical base fluid simulator, then ,
smoke action that real smoke never act wont be created by maya fluid.
but sadly i found this:

4th photo is what i want to create.
when real smoke acts like this, i should create it.
but i wandered about it.

how to create it?

Visual Effects Animator Salary? (eta to pay off loan)

hey guys,

I wanna know around how much a visual effects animator makes in LA.. (.. just like an average estimate i guess). The reason i ask is cuz im 20 and planning to take a 3 yr course at Gnomon that is gonna cost around 65,000… I wanna know if i should even do this. Like, if i did, would it take like my whole life to pay off the loan ill probably take out, you know? or if its worth it for the sake of education in the end. any thoughts? thanks!

(this is more about the money side of things. I pretty much know about evry school there is at this point but they’re all effin pricey.)

VFX SCHOOLvs Online vs dvd’s vs books vs.. anything else…

Hello world.
[I already posted a similar thread but this one should hopefully answer all…]

I studied art/architecture for about 2+ yrs before I realized what I wanted to do from the start= VFX. Unfortunately, it was a pretty crappy school for vfx and film (ASU) and I really didn’t learn anything relevant that could benefit me in the field, aside from some basic 2D and 3D design. So Im pretty much starting from scratch again… but its all good cuz I’m barely 20 and haven’t wasted too much of my life… ha.

I have the drive to work, but don’t know where to start. I feel the need for some traditional education in drawing and design since I didnt get much of it at ASU. After, I obviously need to learn the digital side of things….but, I am also Middle-class, and cant afford schools slapping 80k receipt on my forehead unless I get a loan.. but idk if thats a good idea either so..

So my question (preferably for someone already working or finishing schooling):

How did you do it? ……………..or WHAT did you do to be where you are today?

Did you spend thousands to go to school? (if you did, ok, but was it WORTH IT though? do you have a job now?) It is easy to pay off schooling once you have a job? Did you learn in your room by yourself and now you are working on the next iron man? Did you go to a normal school then did some other stuff???????

Any stories that fit my circumstances are welcome! It would be really encouraging! doesnt have to be long either.. just tell me how effective it was ! 🙂 thanks!
