OFFF Main Titles 2013: Mr. Emilton’s Cabinet of Curiosities

OFFF 2013 Main Titles by From Form from OFFF, let’s feed the future on Vimeo.

There’s always much anticipation towards the new Offf Barcelona titles. At least, for me there is. With companies like The Mill, Post Panic, Upperfirst and Brosmind it almost seems like unfair compition to begin with. Not that there’s anything to win, but you definately want to show what you are worth.

This years title is made in a colaboration between dutch based design studio From Form and Part of Something.

They decided to take a step back. No over the top VFX, insane 3D animations and fast paced editing. Purely focussing on the narrative, telling an inspiring story about a man and his journey and the need to be curious.

The names of the speakers merged with the memorabilia and souvenirs of all his journeys. It’s not new to put the names of the speakers on objects, 2 years ago Post Panic did that for the same Festival. But the combination of a good storyline, nice camera angles and almost everything in-camera make this a piece to remember.

The superfine audio is done by
Ben Lukas Boysen, as is becoming a tradition for the Offf festival. Also take note of the subtle cello track in the background.

The Mill NY: 2010 OFFF Opening Titles

The Mill NY was commissioned to do the OFFF opening titles this year, and took the opportunity to debut their integrated design and animation team. The languid journey they take us on through the forty-five titles for this years OFFF conference displays the immense potential this new division of the Mill has, especially considering the production resources they have at their disposal.

Mill NY staff Jeff Stevens (Design Director), Boo Wong (Senior Design & Content Producer) and Colin Pearsall (Executive Producer/Content) were all kind enough to answer a few questions about this piece and the new division of the Mill.

Splicing up biological elements and reforming them to create brand new species to illustrate the beauty that results from the exchange of ideas at a conference like OFFF is splendid and must have been a joy to work with as a theme…or at least that’s my take on it. Regardless, what led you to your concept and how did you go about developing it?

Jeff Stevens: The original, over arching concept was strength vs beauty and the affinity that each has for the other. At the same time, I wanted to create something that was abstract yet ‘seemingly’ natural. So, creating an environment that was underwater mixed with air began to take shape. Texture was important to me, so when Kim began illustrating, the contours and rawness of materials started to create a landscape and pattern for all of our characters. The best part was that nothing needed to be real. We could have suggested more reality but I think the blend of species, environment, and biomechanics perfectly summed up that affinity I was looking for.

Prologue: OFFF 2009 Titles

ilya-new

Prologue’s Ilya Abulhanov designed and directed this title sequence for the 2009 OFFF festival in Oeiras, Portugal.

Starring a mysterious cast clad in para-military gear, the sequence feels like the pre-amble to a guerrilla warfare strike in the not-so-distant future. The quirky costumes and desolate landscapes are the real focus here, mixing elements of Half-Life, Star Wars and the Mujahideen. Ilya does a nice job balancing the sparse cinematographic compositions with solid type and understated graphics.

As always, HECQ delivered an outstanding soundtrack that extends the ambience of the visuals and builds tension throughout the project.

Onesize: OFFF 2009 Sponsor Titles

As festival season makes its way around the globe, we are hit with an annual slew of exceptional, experimental (no pun intended) work from some of our most talented shops and individuals.

This time around we’ve got Onesize coming strong with the Sponsor Titles for OFFF Lisbon, 2009. This ambitious, 8 minute piece walks us through a countless number of classic and unexpected 3D type experiments. I encourage you to stick around until the end!

An Eastern-Block archival video vibe sets the mood, while an impressive cameo from Onesize’s own Head of 3D (Harm van Zon) brings narrative and humor to what could have become another piece of derivative shape/type-porn.

Be sure to check out some of behind-the-scenes extras as well.
