Optimising a card setup

I have a shot where I’m trying to fake a dust trail on the ground from a crashing fighterjet.

Sorry, I can’t put up my script so I’ll describe it as best as I can.

My basic set up is –

2d rendering of ground and also one of the jet,
Bring in camera and proxy geo from 3DSMax (Oh, a huge kudos to whoever wrote that Nuke’Em script, what a lifesaver!)
use stock footage of dust to put onto cards and line up in 3d space.

Is there any limit to the amount of cards to use?

I have 5 sequences of dust and I’ve done some retiming on them (to slow them down) and a few other things (grade, blur etc) and then rerendered them and then I’ve plugged them straight into a large amount of cards. I have about 50 cards and some of them I have edited using bicubics to loose a bit of the flat feel. Should I project instead of just pluggin them in? That would be a hell of a lot of cameras and I would think that would slow the script down even more.

My script was starting to get a bis messy so I started to group the cards to keep track of them and then plug several scene nodes into one main scene before the scanline render node. Is this bad? Should I just use one scene node? Or use a copy (or a clone) of the camera for each smaller scene?

Also, I have used Retime nodes to offset the starting of each of the dust sequences for each card, should I use a timeoffset node instead?

I have to try and optimise this scene as it keeps bloody crashing on me and I really, REALLY, want to finish this shot tomorrow as it’s driving me mad! 😡 (And no finished shot will mean no beer for me tomorrow night, and by god after this week I could do with a few!)

Phew!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Depth of field

HI people:] i have another cuestion about composition in NUKE – how can i use a DEPTH pass in nuke for create depth of field effect in my shot. I don´t know if exist specific node for this:radar: . :thanks:

BLEND MODES inside NUKE ?

hi fellas, anyone know why the blend modes inside nuke is totally different with any other comp apps? coz i never found this before. instead of colour space , even i tried there`s slightlyh different. I have image Graphic (A)–multiply on top of BG(shot)–B, but different result , and it`s not whut i expected.

Python access to multiple views

Im pretty new to python and nuke scripting and am trying to gain access to a read nodes ‘file’ knob, which I can do fine, but if there are multiple views setup (for stereo) im not sure how to get the different values, or tell if a knob is split.
Cheers;

Discussion; Nuke import UI

While enjoying using Nuke, I’m suprised at the hardcore line cmd nature of the import UI. To get just simple DIR lists seems a little rigid to me.

And the font import element in the text node is nothing more than a windows fontfile list – it’s like something from the Middle Ages (note to self: check if they had computers in Middle Ages)

I’m not expecting the imort userface of c/f/f/i* (to me one of the useful and elegant file importers, with added scrubbing) nor do I expect to flip through fonts in an interactive way (dont I? Why don’t I ??… it’s not unreasonable…) – okay, actually, I do now, here in 2010, expect to flip through fonts in an interactive update way.

And to pre-empt answers of
‘Well, pipeline compositors only need DIR UI’s because all their footage is on a server", well, thats fine, but my pipeline consists of two, and both of us like to at least see – if not scrub thru – a shot before loading it, especially when all the file names are just a bunch of frame references, and it’s late, and it was a bad idea to open a beer just to see us through the last few shots.

and as for…

"Only motion graphics programs need font utilities"
Well, either you have a text node or you don’t. And if you do have a text node, don’t force me to open up a $20 font viewer to do the job a $3000 compositor just can’t handle!

Seriously, Im a nuke newbie, so am I missing something? Is there a secret UI friendly button I haven’t hit? Does everyone just use a third party script as standard?

Or does the latest compositing kid on the block really want to make me feel like I’m 20 years old again, typing BASIC into a DEC10?

Discuss! 🙂

Viewer texture update on playback

Is there some secret switch to force viewer textures to update every frame when doing previews? with caching or otherwise? going through the scanline renderer is slow and it’s like I’m in play lock on flame all the time – not really useful when trying to match to live action.

Selecting Boujou Tracks in nuke

Hi,

We can select the tracking points in Nuke camera tracker and extracting the tracks in NUke 6.1 , but when we import from boujou this is not working, is it any way to select the tracking points and extract from the boujou cam tracking points

multiplane.!

hi
i’m trying to make a life panoramic back ground to be able to pan on it.!!
like the tutorial on foundry site.but:
1-i have footages instead of stills:rolleyes:
2-i took them unevenly but from on point(i mean they’re not horizontally or vertically sharply after each other):D
3- the film size and camera is si-2k highest (2048*1152):rip:
4-i tried the alignment with camera focal length on card systems like the multiplane tutorial but::happydevi
i have some problems on matching the footages correctly.. and they seem needy to be stretched..and distorted.
