First Red HDRx Footage

Hey Guy’s,

The first footage from the new HDR mode on Red is out (in mov format not HDR). You can check it out here:
http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=653788

It would be super great for keying and tracking. However, as it get’s rid of the 24p motion blur (Or, there is a mode to get near to it) the footage could just not sit as good as normal. Despite the ease of pulling the key. Though the difference could be negligible to the amount of moblur you’d loose in the process of a key anyway.

What are your thoughts and opinions on this?

Storage setup for large data volumes.

Anyone of you guys out there that could recommend a storage set-up for working with 4k .dpx files? Right now I have a server with 72.5mb/s download speed and 15mb/s upload speed. I also have two RAID0 SATA drives internally on my workstation. In the near future I will be working compositing allot of shots for a film. I think upgrading to some form off NAS,DAS,SAS RAID is the way to go. I just don’t know which one to go with. And I should also add that I don’t have endless means, but a rather tight budget.

Hyperthread MacPro

Is there a way to hyperthread a MacPro. I am running a dual quad core intel Mac. I want to boost it from 8 cores to 16 threads

Ptex implementation

The Foundry have released news that Ptex will soon be implemented within Mari after Disney decided to make their proprietary painting technology available commercially. From what I can gather Autodesk are also going to be using Ptex within Mudbox following the recent Siggraph presentation from Pixar.
Personally I can’t wait for these releases and to finally remove the annoying task of UV mapping complex geometry!

Anyone have any news on releases or related material?

Which PC amongst these would be good for me ?

Hi all,
hope you guys are doing great …. at my last post i got some great replies and advices whether my old laptop wd be enough for my new vfx project. I had been giving it some thoughts now and tried to find some good desktops, some refrubished with the money I have.

I wan to run these programs, may 2-3 at the same time :

Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
3d Max
Maya
After effects
Syflex
VRay
Houdini
Realflow
Renderman

Now I should ideally be looking at this beast :
SYX OVERCLOCKABLE I7 GAMING PC
http://www.circuitcity.com/applicati…4&Sku=SYX-1052

But unfortunately I do not have that kind of money. I do not know how much would it cost to custom make that kind of desktop and who can make it for me in cheap cost. Some imputs regarding that would be appreciated too.

I was looking into these desktops lately :

1) HP Factory Refurbished Pavilion Elite HPE-170T Desktop – 8GB DDR3, 750GB HDD, Core i7-860~3.46GHz Quad-Core WIFI

http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-Factory-Refur…pt=Desktop_PCs

2) HP – Factory-Refurbished Pavilion Desktop / Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor / 7GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Fac…&skuId=1014586

3) Gateway – Desktop / Intel® Core™ i7 Processor / 8GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+…&skuId=9974337

4) Lenovo – Ideacentre Desktop / Intel® Core™ i7 Processor / 8GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Lenovo+-…&skuId=9979887

These are all that I could find … i will add some if i find some later. Please advice me which one would be good within $900 range ( max). Also some advice on the approx. cost and assemblers regarding a specific configuration or for the above SYX OVERCLOCKABLE I7 GAMING PC would be really appreciated. I would be looking for some real helpful feedbacks. Thank you:o

I Need a BEAST Computer…Hows this look?

Ok…so I am in need of a BEAST computer. I know quite a lot about computers, but I am here looking for a little help. I am enrolling in film school and looking to upgrade to a nice computer. I do graphic design, motion graphics, post video production (special effects/edit film), and also 3d rendering.

The laptop I work from handles my graphic designing part of work fine. When it comes to rendering some 3d work and some of my After Effects projects with HD footage, it tends to crash and stutter way too much. I know I should probably go Mac, but at the moment I do not have the money. I am looking to spend $1,500 – $2,000 on the CPU not including the monitor and what not. I plan on doing dual monitors both at a nice size. The computer I am looking at right now is this – http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati…054&CatId=4928

I know this is a gaming pc, but I feel like going in this lane would be the right choice. I want my computer to not stutter when working on MASSIVE projects in After Effects or 3DS Max. Any advice people? I want atleast 8GB ram, DDR3, and a very good graphics card. Also, is Windows 7 legit? I’m working on vista on my laptop.

Thanks in advance for the help! :thanks:

what motion capture device should a company consider and how to use 3dmax with them?

The company i’m working for is considering buying a character motion capture device, what specifications should i look at when searching for such device and how do you use it with 3dmax?

I need to know the specs of the available hardware, what specs are important and how to work with it in 3dmax

I have no experience using motion capture so i would also appreciate any links to overviews/tutorials/articles

Apple iMac 27”and FCS3 and After Effects

Hello!

At first I’m sorry for my english guys…

I’m interested in buying 27” imac (new gen) and I would like to know how is this hardware usable for practical work. I work as professional editor and director – usually on documentary and promotional videos. I’m able to use after effects.

For my work I need just classical editing tools like Final Cut, but I’m also doing "my stuff" – movies. I need it basically for compositing, some 3D stuff is done by external co-worker. I’m just "putting layers together".

I’m not planning to use Smoke or Nuke, because it’s out of my financial capacity, but maybe one day.
Lot of people said to me, that I should buy Mac Pro, which is quite expensive here in Czech Republic, I want to know if 27 inch iMac is realistically usable machine for serious work with FCS and if its powerful enough for coloring, motion or AE.

THanks for answer
