Intuos4 Question

If anyone here uses the Intuos 4 maybe you can help me.

Im finding that in photoshop the pressure i use on my pen is affecting brush flow (i think is the word… >.> blanking out. If i go light the line is very thin, the harder i press the larger it gets to maximum brush size) though i seem to remember this affecting opacity when i first bought it, which i prefered.

AM i just remebering BS or is there a way to set that?

final cut studio – yay or nay?

Hey guys, buyin a macbook pro done to the teeth. I’m wondering if I should get final cut installed with it. Ido have the money, but obviously don’t wanna waste it 😛 ill be using nuke, maya, houdini, syntheyes, and posssibly after effects. Is final cut worth having plus these? I’ve never used it. Also any suggstions on mice?

Hardware when working with RED footage + a little dilemma.

HI guys Im in a bit over my head here and I could really use your advice.
The thing is Im just breaking into the whole vfx industry and just been offered my first real freelance assignment. Its a commercial shot with a red camera at 4k. I know i have the know-how to pull this of but im not so sure if my computer can, im especially worried about outputting it all.

My computer is a AMD Athlon 64 dual core with 3 gigs of ram and a ATI radeon 3200 HD card… Yeah know but as newly graduated its all i can afford.

I know i can work i 1080p and that you can call on a low resolution sample of the 4k red footage, but do you think my computer could handle it? I don’t want to accept any assignment I cant pull of but then again it would suck if all thats keeping me from really breaking in to the industry is the hardware. And if i don’t get any money I cant buy new equipment etc etc.

So what is your advice? Can my computer deal with red footage? Is there any work around? Or should i just decline?

One more question – Best mnouse type for macbook pro

Okay so I know there is no "Best" but I mean out of these two:

A. Apples Magic Track Pad – This really intrigues me, seem easy, quick, and more efficient than a mouse (Obviously will be used for VFX)
B. Apples Magic Mouse – This mouse seems kinda cool for what it is.

Im looking for something that will be efficient with my laptop, and easy to use. I hate a laptops trackpad. Too small and annoying.

Id prefer input from anyone whose ever tried them, but wouldnt mind others’ aswell.

Macbook Pro – PC Question

One more thing. Ive never used a mac before so i need some help with this answer.

If i have after effects, maya, etc on my macbook, and then have an editing studio at home (likely end up being that the pc is not quite as fast as the macbook but can handle it very well and is more comfortable) Will the save project files form a mac work on my pc and vice versa?

I ask cuz my macbook pro im thinkin about buying is going to have a solid state hardrive so its fast as all hell, but it will be small, and not be able to hold alot, however i have a 1.5 TB hardrive in my desktop now, and want to use it as storage, and for small edits in between.

Compatible?

Much obliged!

Graphics Card Pondering

Hey guys, so im starting a post graduate course at Seneca with thier VFT program.
I have a pretty beast computer (quad core i7 processors, 12gb ddr3 ram, 1.5tb harddrive, and a 5770 hd liquid cooled video card)
However this is a gaming card.
My computer runs the editing rather well, i havent had any big issues yet, but i have had to turn off openGL in after effects. Im wondering what the most recommeneded top 3 video cards are (under 2.5 – 3grand xD ) that i should use. Im also trying to find out if my computers ram is upgradable and i dont wanna take off the side :p

Im also buying a 15" Macbook Pro 2.66ghz for traveling and in class. Ill likely max the ram in this to 8gb.

Any recommendations for things to do? After fees i have about $6737.00 left to buy myself some gear.

Thanks!

Critical System for Nuke and AE5

Hi
I need help on building a workstation for a very specific need.

I need to composite 2K DPX 10-bit log files that have been datacined (scanned from 35mm) with CGI (delivered to me as EXR 2K). Other than plug-ins, I don’t plan to use anything else on this station.

One workstation is all we can afford, and it’s an indie project. But it has be able to composite in 2K, and I expect the workload to be as heavy as possible – CGI, smoke, blur, what-not. I DON’T want a ready made solution.

After researching this for a week, I have come across these issues:
1. Do I need 4/6/12 cores? i7 or Xeon?
2. Is 12GB RAM enough or should I go for 24GB?
3. Do I need a Quadro FX (4800 or 5800) or can I make do with a lesser graphics card?
4. I’ve read elsewhere that I need a RAID 0 Cache for real-time viewing, but how? Can I make do with eSATA, USB 2.0 or SATA II or III? Will this work:
a. Main drive: 128GB SSD for OS and software
b. RAID 0 500GBx2 for Cache 7,200rpm
c. Media Drive 2TB 7,200rpm (for source files)
d. Output Drive 4x1TB RAID 5 for rendered files
5. Can I save money if I have a render farm of cheap Quad CPUs?
6. Can I work with and HP2840zx 24" monitor for viewing 2K (along with HP’s calibration kit and a Blackmagic Decklink HD Pro)? How many monitors will I need? If I need two, can the GUI monitor be an Apple 30"?

The aim is to save money where high-performance is not needed so I can spend it elsewhere. We have just enough money to set up a workstation that will perform fast enough to get the job done in real-time (I mean working in real-time, rendering not included).

I hope I have made sense. It is very confusing and terrifying to spend a lot of money when one has no clue how to proceed. Any help will be welcome. If I have left out anything, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
