THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX.

The promise of Wes Anderson’s new film, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, seems a little hard to deliver on BUT……it’s like, c’mon!!!!! Roald Dahl, George Clooney, Jarvis Cocker, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, and Owen Wilson all signed on so why can’t you? Like, you don’t always have to be so stuffy. KIMMEL’S SCREENTESTS.

Adam Kimmel’s lookbook for Fall / Winter 2009 puts Factory alum Gerard Malanga behind the lens to recreate Warhol’s famously awkward screentests from so many decades ago. Stacked from top to bottom with familiar and talented faces, all methods of artistic expression get screentime as Kunle Martins, Matthew Barney, Francesco Clemente, and Glenn O’Brien – to name a few – sit on the hot seat in heavily shadowed awkwardness. Valentino: The Last Emperor

I guess I sorta slept on this past festival season so I might be behind on this one– but it looks like a must see.

Valentino: The Last Emperor is a feature-length film on the legendary designer Valentino Garavani in the wake of his exit in 2008 from the company he founded in Rome more than 45 years ago. Produced and directed by Matt Tyrnauer, Special Correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine, the film is an intimate, engaging and very funny fly-on-the-wall exploration of the singular world of one of Italy’s richest and most famous men. The film documents the colorful and dramatic closing act of Valentino’s celebrated career, tells the story of his extraordinary life and work, and also explores the larger themes affecting the fashion business today. But at the heart of the film is the unique relationship between Valentino and his business partner and companion of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti.”

Still Run. a film by Shilo.

Shilo recently completed Still Run, a music video for the Australian band BrotherSister from their latest album The Wunder Tales. After we listened to the record, we fell in love with the graceful beauty of the song and lyrics and knew we wanted to make a film that explored the idea of perseverance through change and adversity. The music for Still Run offers a haunting, multilayered, atmospheric mix with a steady, moving beat with but the lyrics say it all: “I still run, I still run, I still wander. In our day, everyday, we would wander. And I want to go, were nobody moves. Are you hearing something, don’t let me see you move.

Chanel No. 5 by Jean-Pierre Jeunet

The NYTimes blog, The Moment, has a great post taking you through the history of the Chanel No. 5 short film series that began back in 1960 with Richard Avendon and Vicky Hilber, progressed through the 70s with Catherine Deneuve and culminated with Baz Luhrmann’s Nicole Kidman epic. Always coupling a fantastic director with an iconic beauty, Jeunet’s take is no different with his muse, Audrey Tautou, featured in the latest film. Go directly to Jeunet’s film HERE or to the Moment’s Chanel tribute HERE.

LEGS: Bravery

LEGS are back with another off-the-wall web-film for Diesel. You may remember them from last fall when they launched with a web campaign that included ‘Pete the Meat Puppet’. This one, for Diesel/L’Oreal’s new fragrance Only the Brave, is three films that play at once to create a fourth.

The three films in this triptych deal with themes of heart, mind and nerve. The centerpiece of mind narrates the other more abstract, non-linear pieces. Legs managed to mash-up a wide range of film vernacular in the process. The obvious quotations of Lynch and expanded-cinema pioneer, Brakhage are backed up by an array of other references including Jurgen Leth, Jarmusch, Sam Raimi, Dario Argento and the graveyard scene in Easy Rider.

Though this didn’t have the budget of the piece featured in my last post, it is still another great example of the freedom directors are being given within the realm of online-content creation. Legs was given a great opportunity to flex their writing and directing chops with an assumed creative freedom that would likely be unmatched in an on-air environment.
