using of PNG in movies?

film scanned to proRES…Help

HI all,

Ok, I have a 5 minute short that was filmed on 35 mil and was transfered (scanned) to a quicktime ProRES 4.2.2
It was filmed & scanned in Prague/FAMU, from a film student. They gave him 2 choices for the transfer to be in, and he picked Quicktime.(wrong choice I bet)
He gave me the edited version that he said is an exact duplicate in QT properties.

Frame Size = 1920 x 1080
Compressor = Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
Quality = Most (5.00)

From what I understand, film scans are 10bit dpx files. So I don’t know if I should treat this as a "Video" 8 bit or a "Film " 10 bit log?

I am doing color grading on it and from what I hear, 10 bit would give better headroom and better results.
Did we loose any chance to using it as a 10 bit by using a Quicktime?
Is there any way to convert it to 10 bit?
I am so confused….

Should I have converted to exr before offline?

Hey guys, so I shot all the footage for my thesis this last weekend using a RED. It is going to be a spec commercial and some shots have vfx and some don’t. I transcoded all the .r3d’s to MXF’s to work in avid for offline. I’m still sorting through shots and creating my subclips…still not near radio edit.

Final delivery will be rec 709, not planning on doing film out.

Question is: before transcoding all .r3d’s into mxf’s for offline…should I have exported the vfx shots into half float linear exr’s for use in vfx and transcode those exr’s into mxf’s for offline? Or is it ok I’f I just stick to the way I’m working and switch the .r3d for whatever image sequence I export from nuke as long as it has the same name as the original .r3d?

The EDL will still work since it just looks at the name of the file and timecode data. (exr’s can store timecode data right?)

i have a whole movie ..that in every cut and stabilize the edit people..done something wrong.and we have 2-3 frame vibration on cuts on both sides..:rip:
how can this be fixed.!? i mean can pixel clean stabilize operation do it.!? 🙁

is it any better or grain reducing if i scan my 35mm in 4k, and do all color corrections and effects then downscale it to 2k for printing.!?

DaVinci software only

now that DaVinci resolve is now at 995$ (full version, software only, on mac),
do you think it will start a new price war for DI systems?

if you have already a decent mac you just by the software and maybe a small panel (like tangent wave) and can do now full DI work.

anybody work on DaVinci? whats your feeling about it? do you think it will loose its "pro" status, just because now everybody can have it on its system?

is it a good move to bring DI forward (and to more studios/vendors)?
