3d Interaction with live action

Ok here’s the story:
Doing some training vids where there’s going to be things happening in the background that interact with the speaker in the foreground (who is simply going be filmed infront of a green screen).

Is there any resources out there, hints, tips, tricks or inspiration out there of 2d and 3d interaction with live action that anyone could recommend pretty please?:scorching:bomb::rip::happydevi

is that legal?

Hi,

I want to practice some fx on existing footages say from existing video clips or movies for non commercial use. It could end up on my reel but I’ll supply a before and after as well as credits. If I use it for a non commercial purpose is it acceptable and allowed? Or am I taking the risk of being sued or being asked to remove an fx piece I did from my reel.

*edit*
Just to clerify, I’m not saying I’ll take a piece from a huge mega VFX movie and add a small fx and cliam I did the shot, I’m saying I’ll take a short clip from a old or a regular movie that has no fx in it at all and add something. IE shot extention, cg building, sky replacement, etc.

Starting VFX – priority software list?

Hi there,

I’ve been a pro multimedia designer for about a decade, done some 3d work, mediocre/good standard, some motion graphics. Just to give a general scope. So i’m going into visual effects design and need to focus my attention on software (there’s a LOT out there and each one is a long time to master, so can’t waste time).

So. From what i can tell, being a VFX artist could be generalised as being a compositor who combines provided assets but who ALSO could provide (should?) their own assets i.e. 3d models/particle renders.

Questions:

To that end i’m going to try and get my explosions nailed. So should i know fumefx + afterburn like the back of my hand?? or will explosion fx nearly always come in as green screen plates?

Should i really discard 3ds max for maya? surely a model is a model, and a render is a render? (seeing as mental ray would be mental ray whether it’s used for any app)… which leads me to…

Should i know mental ray really well? or vray? or renderman? etc.

Finally, i know a bit of AE, should i really graduate to nuke?

Please help! really need to know this stuff!

🙂

Correct/Better technique?

Hi,

I’m trying my hand at removing a background character from a scene. At the moment i’m painting over the frames in photoshop and then simple replacing old frames for the new one’s. Is this the way to do it as i don’t have a ‘clean plate’ that i could put behind the character?

Thanks

new to compositing

Hello everyone! My name is Andre. I am new to the site. I am currently teaching myself nuke and taking courses from fxphd. Which studios use nuke? The only ones that I know of are Digital Domain, ILM, Weta and Blue Sky Studios.

Thanks!

Camera track

Hello, I am learning camera tracking, but have a problem if u can help. I track the footage, then solve it etc, then set the origin etc, but when i put a test object into the shot, it appears way below the plane, as you can see in the screenshot, is this normal? Also regarding alligning the plane, how do u know it is at the right angle etc, lik when i rotate it can look right at variuos angles in view it from. The screenshot is just an example to show the test objects keep apperaing below the grind plane. I

Compositing question

Is there a site where they offer free 3d models and elements to composite? or do i need to learn a 3d program and shoot all the footage myself??
Thanks Much :hippy:

Online Editing

we use Nuke for our composting works and FCP for presenting it to client. we have a little trouble of converting DPX files to quicktime before importing to FCP which we believe is a double work. we are thinking of getting a third party plug-in to enable FCP to handle image series. or a software for online purposes.
we don’t have high end stuff like Flame or Flint at the moment, we are thinking of a cheaper alternative to handle intermediate online presentation. something like Piranha. any suggestions would be much appreciated as we don’t have experiences with Pirhana or third plug in parties for FCP in this regard.
what do you suggest?

Tip for reducing smoke a video

I have this shot that has a lot of smoke floating in it in some parts of the picture. Any tips on how to reduce it a little?

Hi, Beginner here.

Hi,
I’m new to these forums. I read a lot about which software to use and whatnot for vfx. Honestly, I just started delving into the vfx world and I was wondering about where to start.

For starters, I downloaded the learning edition of fusion and I am so eager to learn. I also am a member of lynda.com and am currently studying Maya for 3d.

I was just wondering where I can find tutorials for Fusion and how you pros started out in the vfx world. Like what process you went through to get yourself in it. What software you learned first and all that.

I started with AE a few months ago but kept reading in forums that AE isn’t used much in the industry cause it is layer based. So I just recently downloaded Fusion and am eager to learn.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post. Any information would help out a lot. 🙂
