Just tried to extract this explosion – thought it would be easy coz "it’s just a blue background?!" but it didn’t turn out that way and after much twiddling this is the best i’ve come up with. Can anyone pass judgement – point me in a better diretion to tackle it. Should i post a picture of my nuke script (would it help?)

I have been watching this site and interested in VFX for a long time. I know there are many different paths and skillsets in this field, and sayinf VFX is kind of insulting because its a much broader field.
I am kind of looking for the different fields out there and possible help on where to go. I have an old copy of AE, and I recently bought Shake (even though its no longer being updated). I have a really good background in 3D modeling and texturing, but want to know what is a good place to start.
Thanks for any advice in teaching an old dog new tricks.

I just started doing VFX two months back. I have done Digital Animation from Centennial College Toronto. I know a little Compositing using Combustion and After Effects. I can work on Linux. I have a graphic design porfolio. I have been using Photoshop since 9th grade so I do figure out ways to achieve small effects/enhaance look of footage in After Effects and Combustion.
I want to make a rotoscope showreel is it possible to complete it before Feb 2010? I have around one month 🙁 Its apprentice opening so maybe they will take me without a professional showreel.. Plus that place where the studio is, is really clean it wuld be ideal for me since I have asthma…
I know maya. & basic knowledge in After effects.
I want to be a VFX artist. But I have some doubt abot VFX, SFX & FX artist. Can any experience artist clarify my doubt.
Another ques. is Can VFX artist need to know Compositing soft?
For VFX , SFX wihch software needed & which part?
And I also interested in Maya Dynamics, Fluids, Realflow. So, what position suit for me.
