Compositing Improvement Help

Hey guys – actually I would appreciate some critiques on one of my relatively simple stills. If anyone got some improvements in terms of compositing I would be glad to hear it. Hopefully the resolution is okay and there is no major thing missing which helps the render integrate better – oh yeah obviously its the cube in the front I’m talking about ^^

thanks so far – paul 🙂

I need some serious help

Let me introduce myself — I’m a student in the Cinema Production program at USC, and I need help. I understand the general rules of forum communities and how outsiders barging in for some quick cheap advice on absurd problems can be annoying. To the Mods and frequent users: if this post is in the wrong place, I apologize. However, I am in genuine need of help.

I’m currently exploring the feasibility of a short film concept that I hope to pursue as my senior project here at USC. The film would be short – 5 to 7 minutes – but would require extensive 3D character and effects animation mixed in with live action plates to work. As a student production, the budget will be relatively small; however, my producer and I are prepared to make targeted investments in CG effects to achieve our desired level of quality.

I’ve attached a rough, 1-page outline that hits the various beats in the film (the script is significantly better, but this gets the point across). The following is a link to a recently released short film that demonstrates the level of quality I’m hoping to achieve:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOZkL…eature=channel

The film is Carl Rinsch’s “The Gift”, produced by RSA for Phillips’ Parallel Lines promotion. I’m particularly interested in the high level of realism produced with the robot character models, as similar models and animations are critical to my film. My film would take place almost entirely in a forest and involve robotic creatures of various shapes and sizes. The screen time wouldn’t be as extensive as "The Gift", and there certainly wouldn’t be any shots without background plates, but the effects would be similarly complex.

In the various aspects of physical production I know how to cut corners and drastically reduce costs. The same goes for most of post-production. However, when it comes to the complex CG effects I’ll need for the film, I am lost.

We will hopefully have an effects budget of at least $10,000. Is this enough? Laughably too little? Are there ways to stretch this budget? Are there certain people, companies, strategies — anything, really — that can get a film of comparable visual quality to "The Gift" made with this budget? I have no limit of time, hard work, favors, trades, and other demeaning acts I can use towards this goal; but cash is hard to come by.

I would immensely appreciate any help this community could provide. Really.

Question about after effects and nuke

hey,

I began to learn after effects on video copilot, lovely site, i learned a lot. But i am kinda searching for good e-books about compositing, and after effects. I don’t have time to read them all, so does anyone know a good e-book?

Also a totally different question;

i am learning after effects now, but i want to learn nuke swell. But would it be confusing to learn them both at the same time? Or is it better to learn after effects first and then begin with nuke?

Sorry for my bad English… And thanks in advance 🙂

Visual Effects Career

Alright, I am sorry for this post but I thought maybe some of you guys can help me get a more realistic view on being a visual effects artist.

What are the benifits of being a visual effects artist and what are the chances at being sucessful? I am sorry for saying this wrong but I dont want to work as a freelancer but instead work in a actual studio.

I plan on going to a vfx school and get a degree which is going to cost a lot! But I don’t want to pay that much for a degree and end up freelancing my whole life.

So, is visual effects work mainly just a freelance job or can you get hired at an actual studio if you have a bachelors degree and talent?

Again sorry if I offended any or if it didn’t make sense. I am just confused. 😛

short term course vs degree? 1yr vs 2yr

hello ppl….I’m karthik, from India….i’ve done my bacheolars in commnication but always had a softcorner towards VFX and post production of movies…
Now ‘ve decided to take up VFX as my career i’ve lot of things goin through my mind, may be this is the right place to pose them
1.I’ve a degree so not looking for one more in Vfx but want to learn from a good institute in India or abroad,

if u can suggest some good ones in India….

by my research i got to know VFS offers one yr power packed course(expensive),
so is lostboys (46 weeks)(lesser than VFS),
escape studios around 12 weeks(costly for such a short time but even its power paked),
Academy of Art(if ur a graduate then u can have second bacheolars for two yrs –lesser then VFS)
n most other are offering degree course which i cant do now…
so a maximum of 2yrs is wat ‘m looking at…..so among these which one is worth the money?? and has placement opportunities….being an international student ‘ve look into stay, fee as well for placement so post ur suggestions
(looking for both students and industry insiders suggestions pls help)

2. My experience in this field is nill in the sense ‘d done basics of animation like ball bounce, walk cycle , dog fight etc and nothing related to Vfx till now…but standards here are low so planning to study in a good inst…
so do u want me to learn few things regarding this in India b4 flying abroad since most in those classes have yrs of experience in the field..
"m still very new to this field so should i jump into these schools right away ? can i cope up?? or do some course over here then plan of going to these schools???

3. How far does the knowledge of art helps u in this field??

4.I’m learning MEL on my own…so far will that be helpful??

hoping to get some replys:thumbsup:
