Confused career changer needs advice – please.

Hello Everyone,

My Wife, children and I have just emigrated to Australia from the UK. A new country, a new career.

I’m about to give up 15 years I.T contracting to pursue my creative vocation. I’m going to be an VFX Compositor, come hell or high water. I’ve always hated every morning I’ve had to get up and go to work. It can’t go on any longer.

After an intensive few weeks search on google, I think I’ve narrowed down what applications I need to focus on. Maya, Nuke and After Effects. Am I right? Should I be considering something else?

The reason for the confusion is one of the few courses I’ve found is at Sydney TAFE. It’s a Maya course in 3D Animation and Visual Effects. But to get to the Visual Effects bit, you have to complete the 3D Animation course first. 3D Animation seems like a great skill to acquire but is it necessary? Do compositors need this skill? I’m not getting any younger and I don’t want to waste time.

I need to know where best to focus my efforts.

Other than this TAFE course the only other relevent training I could find that’s currently active is level 1 and 2 After Effects courses. So due to the lack of available training I’ve decided to go the self teach route and do some online tutorial stuff at fxphd, The Gnomon and Motionworks. Anyone know of anywhere else I should be looking?

One more thing, I’m going to be buying a powerful laptop. I feel I should be getting a Mac, but the new Macbook Pro 17 doesn’t have USB 3.0, so it looks like another Sony Vaio (I’ve had three). Unless someone on this forum tells me otherwise and forget USB 3.0 go for the Mac.

I tried emailing some post production houses like Weta Digital for example, for advice and guidance on what I should be studying, but not one of them has replied. To be honest I didn’t really expect a reply. My Wife says I should phone but I feel I’d get the same response as my emails.

A bit long winded I know but if you bothered to read through and reply, I thank you, and your advice is very, very much appreciated.

Cheers in advance.

Color Grade Example

Hey guys,

I’m constantly trying to improve my color grading skills and I just decided to ask here at vfxtalk…

It would be great to receive some feedback from colorists in the industry to the following Grade …. its only a still frame out of an upcoming shortfilm where I might do the grading on…

What kind of a look would you give such a scene and is there anything you would have done in the secondaries to "relight" the shot and make it even more balanced and interesting ? – would you reduce the saturation even more ?

The goal if to make it as filmlike as possible but not by just crushing the blacks and overtint the shot to green/blue as lots of beginners are doing it :>…

cheers,

yaku

Object package for compositing?

I just shot a bunch of interviews against a plain (but well lit) background. There’s a lot of empty room on the shots, so I plan to fill them with photographic objects like plants or lamps.

I’m new to compositing, so I’m looking for a recommendation of a good pack of stock objects/photos ready for compositing (alpha channel) that I could buy!

Thanks

Downloadable node trees (Nuke)

Is there a market for pre-built node trees (nuke)?
I’m just starting out, and at this point, I would pay for some..

motion tracking after effects

hey,

a noob question,

I understand motion tracking, what it stands for and what it does. What I don’t understand is the logic behind tracking points. Where the heck do i need to place them if i want to track a shot?

:thanks:seba

Freelance WIRE REMOVAL WORK – How to charge ?

I have 2 different shots from a company I’m freelancing for. They look simple and they are 44 and 36 sec. All i have to do is basically remove some wires.

How to charge for such work ?

Breakdowns

Why are breakdowns so necessary? Shouldn’t a simple before and after be enough? Who really cares that you show the certain channel or the color correction etc.

NUKE PARTICLES

Does anybody know where I can find a free tutorial for Nuke particles?

I know I could do it in fusion or AE, but I have to learn to do it in Nuke.

I saw the other posts about this subject, but nobody new a tutorial or even that Nuke 6.1 can work with particles, wich is not true. You can find a node in the "etc" list called "particle system".

Anyone can help me, please??
Thanks a lot,

Best regards
