Made against a production budget of $180 million, The Legend of Tarzan has earned just $64.86 million at the global office till date. The movie has earned $45.65 million domestically and $19.3 million at the foreign box office.
The movie opened in the US on 1 July, 2016 and had the privilege of the extended weekend due to the Independence Day holiday on Monday 4 July. Till Sunday 3 July, the movie had earned $38,5 at the US market. However, the Monday holiday didn’t prove that beneficial to boost its revenue as it just added another around $7 million.
Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow’s The Legend of Tarzan bowed at the second position in North America from 3,561 theatres.
Considering its competitors Disney’s Finding Dory has topped the list by earning $550 million globally. And therefore, this animated feature is at the first place at the US box office list.
The movie has also faced competition from Disney’s The BFG and Universal Pictures’ The Purge: Election Year. BFG has earned only $22.3 million while, Election Year has garnered $34.7 million domestically. So both these movies also have a long way to go in order to recover their production budgets.
But, the fact lies that Disney’s BFG and Warner Bros.’ The Legend of Tarzan are having a clash of pulling each other’s audience as both the films constitute of live-action animation and visual effects. Moreover, both the films are epic stories that are retold in a new avatar.
Comparing it to the animated feature named Tarzan created by Disney in 1999, the animated film collected $448 million worldwide back then. It was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures for a limited release on June 16, 1999 followed by a wide release on June 18, 1999.
