London based Territory have created a 50 second trailer to promote the long awaited Steam release of Heroes & Generals, one of the biggest and most successful free to play ‘mass participation’ games online.

A massively scaled multiplayer game developed by Reto-Moto, Heroes & Generals is a FPS based on World War II, that allows players to experience a variety of tactical and strategic roles, playing under either an Axis or Allied command. Gamers can choose to play as frontline infantry or tank gunners, as fighter pilots or paratroopers, or generals in command campaigns.

Territory was briefed to create a trailer to mark the milestone launch, and reflect the human side of conflict, in which men band together, fighting alongside their friends to overcome the enemy.

The live-action trailer focuses on the feel and atmosphere of the game, rather than the gameplay itself. The team devised, scripted, storyboarded, directed, shot and post-produced the film, enhancing it with a contemporary cinematic graphic treatment that references authentic gameplay details, including uniforms, weaponry, vehicles and environments.

‘Our aim was to create a cinematic narrative with the highest live-action production values possible for the budget, to capture the raw emotional tension, excitement and action of a combat situation from a first person perspective’ says David Sheldon-Hicks, Creative Director. ‘With our experience of developing cinematic narratives and cut-scenes to motivate and support gameplay, we had a good grasp of the look and feel we wanted, and having control of every stage of the creative process helped us create something that we all feel proud and excited about’.

This latest trailer builds on Territory’s reputation for creating dynamic motion graphic interfaces, cinematics, cut-scenes and trailers for computer game titles including of Honor, Forza, Killzone 3, Killzone: Mercenary and Little Big Planet.

The one-day green-screen shoot included a cast of 10 actors using stunt wires and hand-to-hand combat techniques, a crew of 20, authentic wardrobe, armoury and set design, and was shot at 240fps on the Sony F55 and Furio dolly.

The pre-production work included scene writing, storyboarding, previs and casting.

The post work included 3D modeling, explosion simulation, editing, keying, rotoscoping, compositing, grading, logo design and animation, and sound design*.
