Qualcomm’s new processor Snapdragon 865 Plus boosts performance by 10 per cent for gaming and AI applications

Qualcomm has announced a refreshed version of its flagship Snapdragon 865 processor called the Snapdragon 865 Plus, which is designed to boost performance by almost 10 per cent for gaming and AI applications.One of the first phones to use the chip will be the upcoming Asus ROG Phone 3. ASUS  announced  that the ROG Phone 3 will come equipped with the 865 Plus, while Lenovo said its Legion sub-brand is working on a 5G mobile gaming device that will use the chipset.

There are three key improvements of the Snapdragon 865 Plus from the stock standard 865:

  • The Kryo 585 CPU has had its clock speed boosted up to a maximum of 3.1GHz, which is 10 percent higher than the standard 865
  • The Adreno 650 GPU offers 10 per cent faster graphics rendering
  • Newly added compatibility for Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6900 connectivity suite, which the company says supports Wi-Fi speeds up to 3.6Gbps

    And like the Snapdragon 865, the new chip taps into the 5G networks that are rolling out across the globe. It pairs with the x55 modem that’s capable of up to 7.5 Gbps download speeds. The continued advance of 5G is more critical than ever now that the coronavirus has radically changed our world. People are stuck at home and are maintaining their distance from each other, forcing them to rely on home broadband service — something 5G could amp up. The next-generation cellular technology, which boasts anywhere from 10 to 100 times the speed of 4G and rapid-fire responsiveness, could improve everything from simple video conferencing to telemedicine and advanced augmented and virtual reality. Gaming is one area that’s expected to benefit from 5G’s responsiveness and fast speeds.
