“Kissey’s newest single is 3 tense minutes into an tactile aural landscape, someplace uncanny and unexpected. Cascading dissonance and distortion wrap around tangled waves of bass, and hints of sci fi futurism trickle throughout the tripped-out layering of her vocals. With a sound this cinematic, it makes sense that ‘Melting Pot’ made its way to the big screen this year, as featured in the Sundance-winning film ‘Dear White People.’
‘Melting Pot’ brings a modern take on Dark Wave, but it’s stylistically unhinged, with a driving 4/4 structure and an extra-large helping of abstraction. Sounds and voices clash, bleed and coalesce with each other just as the lyrics suggest (“Let’s melt together, let us be one”). It’s rough and gritty yet filled with delicate, calculated nuances. Drum patterns shift underneath your feet, and nighttime lyrics float through Kissey’s bold, challenging sound design, in a way that you can’t help but let her “crawl into your skin.”
