Gatorade Derek Jeter Made in New York

Gatorade recently marked the retirement of Yankees baseballer Derek Jeter with “Made In New York”, a commercial set in the Bronx. Filmed on July 23, in 97-degree heat, the commercial shows Jeter walking to Yankee Stadium, interacting with those he meets, to the sounds of Frank Sinatra’s My Way. Jeter’s final game was held on September 28 in Boston.

Everyone in the ad was hired by Gatorade, but almost everyone was kept in the dark regarding the subject matter of the ad and its main character. None of the lines were scripted. The commercial was shot in reverse, chronologically. The Yankees gave Gatorade one hour, from 11 a.m. to noon, for all shots done inside Yankee Stadium. The two pinstriped teammates were the assistant director of the shoot and TBWA/Chiat/Day creative director Renato Fernandez. Fernandez shaved his facial hair and got a haircut the morning of the shot to conform to the Yankees’ facial hair policy, but his face never appears on camera.
