George R. R. Martin has personified the creation of a fictional world. With multiple characters, each with an in depth backstory and some commendable connection to the storyline, Martin has managed to link everything to let the plot proceed and take a new turn in each season. Game of Thrones is undoubtedly a classic piece of art, storytelling and intense drama.
Building characters, stories and relations can be all within the power of the writer’s mind but when it comes to building palaces, kingdoms, thrones, war grounds, landscapes and backgrounds, the VFX team comes into play.
Rising Sun Pictures (RSP) released a VFX breakdown reel showing the creation of one of the most thrilling sequence of Season 6. The devastating decision of Cersei giving a go-ahead to unleash a cache of wildfire on the Great Sept of Baelor, which while not entirely a surprise, was certainly a visually enthralling sequence of the entire season six finale. It showcased almost every major player from King’s Landing, including Margaery Tyrell, go up in flames.
Various elements like building of palaces, vintage structures, statues, mountains, sea, greenlands and the sky have been created using CGI and VFX. Crowd multiplication and set extensions are two things that RSP has played with throughout the sequence in order to bring out the intensity of the drama.
As far as the fire is concerned, it leads one to believe the irony ‘Destruction is beautiful’. The whole sequence of destruction due to the fire has been created quite meticulously as it brings down huge structures and turns them into fumes. So, you may wish to disagree the fact but somewhere this destruction is entertaining.
Game of Thrones is best watched then told and this VFX breakdown stands true to this practice.
