Vivian Wang
Classically trained pianist and music graduate, Vivian Wang had to unlearn much of her formal t raining when she started The Observatory with Leslie Low in 2001. A former TV Presenter for arts and travel documentaries as well as a film music supervisor, Vivian now pursues music full time. Vivian performs on synths, keyboards and percussion in avant rock group, The Observatory. Vivian has performed with Japanese composer and sound artist Otomo Yoshihide and is one-half of ARCN TEMPL. The duo has produced two albums to date. Their first, Emanations of a New World (2010), was released on US label Utech Records. A more recent release came about from their collaboration with local poet and musician X’HO. Lucifugous (2013) is a work that brings to mind influences of Coil, Current 93, Nurse with Wound and David Tibet. Under the moniker ARCN TEMPL, Vivian also indulges her passion for theatre and film as a music composer and sound designer, collaborating prolifically in well received productions such as Dr i f t (Drama Box), The Spirits Play (TETC), Herstory (Drama Box) and A True Calling (EX Theatre). She also freelances as a features writer and a professional voiceover artist.

Cheryl Ong
A Singaporean percussionist who is currently active in music performance and education. Her recent performances include ‘Time travel: tune in’ (network installation work), ‘Playfreely’ (open jam presented by The Observatory), ‘Tribal Gathering: an alternative ensemble’ (presented by the Substation). She has also been involved in several collaborative projects such as ‘Folly of a Garden’ (Arts Fission Dance company), ‘Lao Jiu The musical’ (The Theatre Practice), ‘The Three Big Bullies’ (Paper Monkey Theatre). In January 2013, she became part of the Chinese Ethno Fusion trio SA (仨). They have showcased their music at multiple venues such as the Esplanade, The Substation and Sultan Jazz Club. SA was very honoured to be recipients of the NOISE Singapore music award (2013) and have recently released their debut album. Cheryl heads percussion ensemble ‘A Bigger Bang’ and is part of ‘The Percussion Assembly’. She also freelances for the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. Her early mentors include Mr. Quek Ling Kiong, Mr. Tan Loke Chuah and Mr. Goh Kok Boon. A recipient of the National Arts Council Arts Bursary (Overseas), Cheryl graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing with a degree in Chinese Percussion. During her stint in China, she studied under Professor Wang Jian Hua and was involved in several ensemble and orchestral projects. In 2007, she won the CCTV competition for Traditional Chinese Instruments (overseas category). An exchange year at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Copenhagen proved to be an eyeopener for Cheryl as she started broadening her knowledge on Western percussion instruments and repertoire. She studied under specialists such as Professor Gert Mortensen, Johan Bridger and Christian Schioler. She was also part of percussion ensemble ‘Percurama’ during her stay and was involved in the recording of Per Nørgård’s ‘A Light Hour’.
