DreamWorks Animation’s animated feature film The Croods 2 will be rewritten by Kevin and Dan Hageman. The Hageman brothers are known to have come up with the story for Warner Bros’ blockbuster The Lego Movie and now they will pen the story for this DWA’s sequel project too.
The film was supposed to be released on 22 December, 2017 by 20th Century Fox, but the studio recently put The Story of Ferdin in its place after DWA was sold to NBCUniversal. As The Croods 2 is now no longer under the distribution of 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures will soon announce a release date for the film. The film is expected to release in 2018.
As for the new screenwriters are concerned, the Hageman brothers’ past credits include coming up with stories for The Lego Movie, Hotel Transylvania and the upcoming Lego Ninjago Movie. The writing duo are also working with the director Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix series Trollhunters, the family-friendly event series that’s scheduled for a December streaming.
The Croods 2 is a sequel to DreamWorks Animation’s 2013 film The Croods which grossed $587.2 million worldwide. During that time, it became the second highest-grossing original DWA film behind Kung Fu Panda. Also, it became the highest-grossing 2013 film distributed by 20th Century Fox for that year. So now with 20th Century Fox moving out of the picture, The Croods 2 may have to try its luck at the box office with the new distributor.
Based on the prehistoric animated story of the franchise, a television series titled Dawn of the Croods, aired on 24 December, 2015 on Netflix. With these new writers coming in, we can expect the storyline and the screenplay to undergo changes and emerge with a fresh perspective.
