Framestore talks about BAFTA nomination for ‘His Dark Material’

Framestore was nominated for the Special, Visual and Graphic Effects BAFTA for its work on His Dark Materials.
The Oscar, BAFTA and Emmy-winning studio was involved in the show from pre-production onwards, helping to bring to life the world inhabited by Lyra, Pan, Iorek and Mrs Coulter. Framestore worked on some 2,000 shots, creating everything from stunning environments to 50+ photoreal dæmons and the panserbjørne that inhabit Bad Wolf’s epic adaptation of the Philip Pullman classic.

The vast, complex and deeply imaginative landscape of Philip’s novels requires a world class but quintessentially British band of creatives to bring them to life.

Framestore global managing director film Fiona Walkinshaw said: “We’re all incredibly proud of His Dark Materials, and it’s a tremendous boost to see the team’s hard work recognised by BAFTA – particularly for those who are currently delivering season two.

Framestore creatives worked hand-in-glove with the show’s producers, cast and crew throughout the entire process. She added, “I think the collaborative nature of the work really shows when you see how seamlessly live action mixes with pure CG. I’d like to offer my thanks and congratulations to everyone who worked on season one – particularly VFX Supervisor Russell Dodgson, who led Framestore’s work with such determination and passion.”

Winners of the 2020 British Academy Television Craft Awards will be announced on Friday 17 July.

Hong Kong Disneyland might reopen soon, even before Walt Disney World, Florida

As things ease up around the world, Disney might reopen another theme park very soon.

Having six different major cities around the world, Disney has currently only reopened Shanghai Disneyland. Walt Disney World in Florida, is set to reopen officially on 11 July and now it seems that Hong Kong Disneyland might resume very soon.

Hong Kong Disneyland was the second Disney park to shut down, a day after Shanghai Disneyland closed. As per Deadline reports, a popular Hong Kong theme park, Ocean Park, is set to reopen on 13 June, and the report further states that Hong Kong Disneyland would follow soon. Suggestions are that the second Disney park could be opening up in the next couple of weeks. Official announcement, however, is yet to be made.

There were indications of Hong Kong Disneyland resuming operations over the last few weeks. Being the smallest Disney park in the world, Hong Kong would possibly have the fastest turn around to reopening once the decision is taken.

If one Ocean Park is reopening in a few days, it would be quite likely that Hong Kong Disneyland will actually become the second park to reopen before Walt Disney World opens next month. The other Disney theme parks around the world have not indicated when they might reopen.

All parks will resume with limited capacity and necessary items like face masks, temperature screenings, for a while before the parks achieve something resembling normal.

‘Punyakoti’ selected as a finalist for the New York Animation Film Awards (NYAFA)

Punyakoti, the first ever Sanskrit animation film has another laurel to its credit. The animated film has been shortlisted as a finalist for the New York Animation Film Awards (NYAFA).

Directed by Ravi Shankar Venkateshwaran, Punyakoti launched on Netflix on 31 March 2020 and is presently streaming on the platform. However, the journey was not an easy one for the makers. The film got continuously deferred since April 2019, and got its first exclusive screening for the crowd-funders in October 2019 before landing on the streaming service.

Speaking about the nomination to AnimationXpress, Shankar said, “I’m really happy at the selection. It is a strange feeling when global platforms are taking notice of the innovative work we have done, but the Indian animation fraternity has turned away from even acknowledging something like this has happened. I have written multiple times to the Indian Government but have not even received any recognition.”

Clearly there was not enough buzz around the film in the Indian animation industry as much as it should be. In one of his previous interviews, Shankar revealed to us, that he was still waving off his loans which he took to make Punyakoti see the light of the day.

Produced by Puppetica Media, Punyakoti is inspired by a popular folk song in Kannada, with an imaginary take on the circumstances that led to the encounter between a truth-speaking cow and a tiger in a village that is facing an impending drought.

The script of the film is from a children’s picture book by the same name, written by Shankar himself. The movie follows a five act structure and is modelled along the lines of any international quality production in terms of creative and structural finesse.

The 80-90 minutes animated film has a unique style that’s inspired by Indian folk-art with a mix of traditional and digital animation techniques with more emphasis on the storytelling than on the technical prowess. The team had invested a lot of time and dedication to bring out a style that draws upon the Indian temple art and puppetry- the forms and style which follows the proportion and aesthetics of Indian folk-art and sculpture.

Earlier, Punyakoti won three awards at Animation Xpress’ ANN Awards in August 2019, for ‘Best Animation Digital Film’, ‘Best Voice Over Artist’ (Revathy) and ‘Best Screenplay’.

India’s gaming scene is likely to keep growing post the pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has stilled sports stadiums and arenas into silence, with players kept in lockdown. But the quarantine culture has seen a surge in online gaming, esports, and sports simulation for stay-at-home fans. Esports—a digital media format where virtual game-play is streamed as video content, just like football matches, with players raking in millions has seen a surge in pandemic. Not only that due to the time of social distancing, self-quarantine, and containment, watching other people playing online games from computers and TV screens has surged. The global pandemic has opened avenues to not just play games but also consume them as a mode of entertainment.

Indian Gaming League founder and director Yash Pariani,

In conversation with AnimationXpress, esports platform Indian Gaming League (IGL) founder and director Yash Pariani, shared that, “there has been a huge surge in the number of players as well as the viewers. We have experienced approximately between 300 to 400per cent rise in the number of players every month. Along with such a high rise in the number of participants, the total watch- time of the live streaming of our games on our YouTube channel has grown over 1000 per cent in the last quarter.”

A lot of people have made gaming as a way of social interaction during the period of isolation. During this period he has noticed that the mindset of the people regarding esports has started changing be it consumption, participation or understanding the concept of esports. “A lot of adult population has engaged in esports unlike a few years ago when video games were supposed to be just leisure for teenagers,” he added.

Additionally, in the past three months, the graph for the number of users has skyrocketed. He believes that the number of users is expected to grow even more post-pandemic. Although their chances of a dip in the number of hours an average person is engaged in esports once the lockdown is over, the overall number of users is expected to grow.

Currently, IGL is hosting over 10 tournaments every day for quite a few games, including at least  2 PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile and Ludo King tournament every day. The remaining games like Smashing 4, 8 Ball pool, Fortnite, and others are each hosted over multiple days in a week.

Apart from daily tournaments, they recently hosted an International Charity tournament for three games in collaboration with RoundTable International with a total prize pool of Rs. 90,000. All the entry fee collected from these tournaments was donated toward those who suffered due to COVID-19.

Since many are taking esports as a career option and the social isolation has jump-started the esports game in India, therefore, post-pandemic, he believes the number of users engaging in esports is expected to keep growing. “Especially with all the A-listers entering the esport scene, we can finally expect India’s Gaming scenario to almost be at par with developed countries like USA or China”. It will be interesting for fans and enthusiasts to witness esports and gaming landscape transforming into mainstream and to become at par with USA and China.

Reliance Jio has now partnered with Disney+ Hotstar streaming service and has announced to offer one-year free complimentary Disney+ Hotstar VIP membership to its prepaid users. However, not all Jio users are eligible to get the benefits of this offer. The offer is available for Jio prepaid users opting for various monthly, annual packs as well as data add-on vouchers.

The offer can be availed by Jio prepaid customers opting for specific monthly pack, annual pack, and add on data packs. This is a strategy to bring more consumers on board. The Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription provides exclusive Hotstar specials, unlimited live sporting action, latest Bollywood films, superhero movies, animated films and much more content.

Jio says the partnership will provide a huge benefit to both Jio and Disney+ Hotstar users, though revolutionary video-on-demand content being made available on a superlative digital platform.

This is not the first time that Reliance Jio has partnered with streaming service to provide complimentary offer. Some JioFiber plans come with Amazon Prime Video subscription. Also, Jio isn’t, the first telecom operator to bring such an offer as in April, Airtel had introduced an erringly similar offer that bundled free one-year of Disney+ Hotstar VIP on Rs. 401 recharge plan. Jio’s offer comes as a counter to Airtel.

‘The Promised Neverland’ manga confirms its finale next week

Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu’s The Promised Neverland is officially set to come to an end in the next issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. Shirai and Demizu began their final story arc for The Promised Neverland some time ago, but have managed to keep readers guessing regarding exactly when or how the manga would reach its conclusion.

Written by Shirai and illustrated by Demizu, The Promised Neverland has been serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump since August of 2016. The manga follows a group of children living in Grace Field House, a lavish orphanage. While their life initially seems ideal, they soon discover that they are actually being raised as cattle, and are destined to be killed and sold to ‘higher’ species. Upon learning this, they begin to plan their escape.

An anime adaptation of The Promised Neverland premiered on Fuji TV in Japan in January of 2019, with an English version arriving on Cartoon Network/Adult Swim’s Toonami block a few months later in April.

A second season was set to arrive in October of this year, but has been pushed back to January of 2021 as a result of the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. But, a live-action film adaptation of The Promised Neverland is still set to arrive this December.

As per a report by Deadline, major studios across the UK including Arborfield/Longcross Studios and Maidstone Studios are hoping to reopen in the coming weeks. Arborfield Studios was one of the first studios that shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Managing director Bob Terry has begun working on reopening Arborfield and sister studio Longcross. Terry is conducting several meetings over the next two weeks to finalize safety procedures. The Witcher season 2 had paused production due to the COVID-19 pandemic back in the month of March. The show’s cast and crew members have not issued any statement about resuming production yet.

The Witcher is a Polish-American fantasy drama series produced by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. It is based on the book series of the same name by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. Set on a fictional, medieval-inspired landmass known as “the Continent”, The Witcher explores the legend of Geralt of Rivia and princess Ciri, who are linked by destiny to each other. It stars Henry Cavill, Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra. The show initially follows the three main protagonists at different points of time, exploring formative events that shaped their characters, before eventually merging into a single timeline.

The first season consisted of eight episodes and was released on Netflix in its entirety on December 20, 2019. It is based on The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, which are collections of short stories that precede the main Witcher saga. Before the first season had been released, Netflix announced a second eight-episode season, to be released in 2021; production was scheduled to commence in London in early 2020.The showrunner, Lauren S. Hissrich, previously revealed that the second season will focus on the backstories of Nilfgaardians Fringilla and Cahir. The season will also introduce various new characters including Vesemir and a monster from The Witcher 3. The Witcher season 2 is expected to premiere in 2021.
