Netflix announces one-tier upgrade at zero cost for Basic and Standard plans

Netflix has announced to offer free one-tier upgrades to a more expensive plan for the first 30 days of one’s subscription, through another new promo.

Only available to new Netflix subscribers, the offer is applicable to the basic Rs. 499 and standard Rs. 649 plans, which means one who chooses the Basic plan, will be upgraded to Standard plan for the first 30 days at no additional cost. And if a subscriber picks the Standard plan, he/she will get access to a month of the Premium plan, which costs Rs. 799 per month.

The Netflix plan upgrade from Basic to Standard allows access to high-definition (HD) video resolution and simultaneous viewing on two screens, which is otherwise limited to standard-definition (SD) and one screen only. An upgrade from Standard to Premium entails similar ultra-high-definition (UHD) video resolution, up to 4K, and access to watch on four screens simultaneously.

As per a Gadgets 360 report, a Netflix spokesperson shared, “We’re looking at different marketing promotions in India to attract new members and give them a great Netflix experience.”

After the free period, Netflix will give the option of continuing on the upgraded plan by paying the original plan cost. If not, the subscriber will be demoted to the plan that they originally chose. Offering  members a taste of the additional features one tier up, the streaming giant is hoping to lure users to enjoy premium content by paying more going forward.

The streaming platform has previously tested free plan upgrades in other markets, and it’s currently running the offer in countries outside of India as well.

This means Avatar 2 will be the first major Hollywood title to start filming again in the wake of the industry-wide production shutdown in March due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The production has also released some concept photos of the sequel, which will explore the oceans of Pandora. Avatar 2 is the sequel to Cameron’s 2009 3D hit movie and it will go to the theaters on 17 December 2021.

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ just debuted in ‘Fortnite’

During Covid-19 pandemic online games, especially, have seen an influx of new players and when it comes to online games, Fortnite Battle Royale is simply unavoidable. The latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Tenet debuted in Fortnite recently. Although very little about the film is actually known, Tenet is described as a movie set within the world of international espionage, and the first trailer and marketing material for the movie has played up a concept in which time moves forward and backward — hence the palindrome title. The new trailer expands on John David Washington’s main character as he learns to warp time, with the stake of the world and its future in his hands.

Fortnite is known for its in-game live concerts, taking advantage of it many musical artists are not only taking to Fortnite to hold virtual concerts, they’re even debuting songs on the platform. Travis Scott’s Fortnite concert was quite an extraordinary spectacle. He debuted his new single called ‘Astronomical’ in the virtual space too. From the looks of it, world premiers in Fortnite are here to stay.Prior to Nolan’s Tenet trailer premiering in Epic Games’ massive virtual universe, Disney and director J.J. Abrams teamed up with Epic to debut a scene from Star Wars: The Rise of SkywalkerAbrams was on hand to introduce the clip, appearing as a tinier virtual version of himself on top of a stage where players could see him talk to host Geoff Keighley. The scene was later alluded to in  The Rise of Skywalker’s opening crawl. After the trailer premiered, Keighley also announced that a classic Nolan movie will screen in Fortnite for fans some time this summer.

Tenate  is still slated for 17 July, according to new marketing material that appeared on Twitter after the trailer debuted. Nolan’s Tenet isn’t just one of Warner Bros.’ biggest movies of the year — it’s also become a litmus test as to whether Hollywood studios could start releasing their films after facing a series of delays brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mulan, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, and Wonder Woman 1984 are all set to follow Tenet.

‘Tuca & Bertie’ is renewed for season two having picked up by Adult Swim

Tuca & Bertie has been renewed for a second season as Adult Swim has revived the series that initially streamed on Netflix.

The animated series was a hilarious and wonderful examination of adult relationships, coupled with whimsical visuals with a feel-good factor. The show received critical acclaim being referred to as one of the best shows of 2019.

But in July 2019, the series was discontinued after the very first season, sparking controversy over Netflix’s inability to market the show to a wider audience.

Yesterday, 22 May, creator Lisa Hanawalt herself (the cartoonist behind BoJack Horseman’s visual style) took to Twitter to announce that the show would be returning with a new home- Cartoon Network’s late-night programming block Adult Swim and will premiere in 2021.

Tuca & Bertie starred comedians Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong as two mismatched bird best friends with a supporting cast including Steven Yeun, John Early, Richard E. Grant and Reggie Watts.

Tuca & Bertie follows “the friendship between two 30-year-old bird-women who live in the same apartment building – Tuca, a cocky, care-free toucan; and Bertie, an anxious, daydreaming songbird.

The move marks a reverse of the more “traditional” model of Netflix picking up canceled network shows, though Tuca & Bertie isn’t the first to pull the reverse-Netflix. Hanawalt also served as the executive producer alongside Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Noel Bright, Steven A. Cohen, and Haddish.

Toon Club bags its 29th international award for animated short created by children

Toon Club, a pioneering organisation dedicated to teaching children the art of animation and visual storytelling in India won its 29th international award this month. Morphing Tales won the Senior Jury Award at Corti A Ponte, Italy.

Five Toon Club films Clean & Green, Out of the Frame, The Great Chase, Monster Land and Morphing Tales were officially selected and screened online on 4 and 5 May 2020. Children studying in Italian schools voted for the best films. “We’re super excited that our sand animation film Morphing Tales was well appreciated,” mentioned Toon Club founder and principal Tehzeeb Khurana.

Apart from this achievement, Something Fishy is a finalist at the 15th Busan International Children and Youth Film Festival’s (BIKY) competition section, Ready~Action!. Three others have qualified in the non-competition program, Reborn the BIKY: Clean & Green, Pika Boo, Out of the Frame. Two films Side Efx and Out of the Frame are among the 90 officially selected animated films of 317 submissions from 35 countries at 11th VAFI & RAFI- International Children and Youth Animation Film Festival, Croatia 2020.

“While India has been extremely strong in pedagogical education, we have been by and large languishing in the Arts domain. The missing A for Arts in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) is now made central to understanding varied disciplines and is gathering STEAM!” added Khurana.

The winning film was created in 2017 by a group of seven kids between the age group 10-11 years. Toon Club is proud to be the pioneer in integrating Animation, seamlessly with the pedagogical curriculum in some of the leading schools of Mumbai.

Toon Club, which began in 2003, gives children a platform to tell their own stories. Khurana designs the curriculum and conducts sessions mostly by herself, with support from staff and assistant faculty, and a backend technical team. Toon Club also invites artists and animators from NID and IDC to take sessions on specialised animation techniques.

Still from ‘Morphing Tales’

Most of the kids had school and online classes till recently, said Khurana. “In their free time, they are pursuing their hobbies. I see many of them posting their artworks/comics on Instagram. Though we refrain from teaching softwares and apps at Toon Club, we do suggest apps that kids can download at home and play around with. Our students are adept in apps like procreate, stykz, animation desk and others.

As the organisation cannot conduct their regular workshops, the team is currently in discussion to hold workshops online in collaboration with a leading international studio. This is part of their effort to foster cultural bonds, an exchange program for students from both the countries.

#WorldTurtleDay: Top five animated turtles to celebrate the day

Celebrated every year on May 23,  World Turtle Day is aimed at drawing attention and knowledge about turtles and tortoises, and increasing awareness about the measures that should be taken to help them survive and thrive in their natural environment against the vicissitudes of the ecosystem.

One of the oldest species known to mankind, turtles are also considered auspicious in India. Folks cosplay  as turtles to raise awareness about the dangers meted out to their natural habitat as a result of human activity as well as natural causes. In popular culture, especially movies and animation, turtles have been depicted in many ways.

On World Turtle Day 2020, here are our top five turtle characters that won our hearts :-

Squirtle

Pokemon Go Has Made Me A Better Person | Pokemon, Cute pokemon ...

Squirtle Squirtle! What it rhymes with is just anyone’s guess. And that’s what this adorable little Pokemon derives its inspiration from. Squirtle is a small Pokémon that resembles a light blue turtle. While it typically walks on its two short legs, it has been shown to run on all fours in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It has large, purplish or reddish eyes and a slightly hooked upper lip. Each of its hands and feet have three pointed digits. The end of its long tail curls inward. Its body is encased by a tough shell that forms and hardens after birth. This shell is brown on the top, pale yellow on the bottom, and has a thick white ridge between the two halves. The anime has shown that it can be found living on secluded islands with other members of its evolutionary line. In the past, Skull Bash was its signature move.

Crush

Turtle-talking with Crush | Tentative Equinox

Crush is a sea turtle who speaks in the manner of a surfer dude. He helps Marlin and Dory get to Sydney Harbour to rescue Nemo. His nicknames for Marlin and Dory are “Jellyman” and “Little Blue”, respectively. After he transports Marlin and Dory to their destination to find Nemo, Marlin asks Crush how old he is to which he replies, “150, dude, and still young!” Probably. the best way to describe Crush is a surfer punk who loves and cares for his son, Squirt.

When it comes to traveling the ocean’s currents, no one has as much fun as Crush. The 150-year-old sea turtle is young at heart with a laid-back surfer dude attitude that lets him go with the flow. But Crush is no drifter; he loves nothing more than the thrill of riding the rollicking East Australian Current (EAC) with his offspring. When Crush encounters Marlin and Dory, he’s more than happy to help them find their way, provided they can hold on for the wildest ride of their lives.

Speed

CV-37 | The Swan Princess, desk wallpapers

Mr. Lorenzo Trudgealong “Speed” is a turtle the supporting character of The Swan Princess. Odette, Derek, Jean-Bob and Puffin’s friend. He is wise but lazy at most times due to his slow nature. Even though he is slow on land, he is a fast swimmer, thus earning him the name, Speed. He says or does things slowly. He also has a bit of a sarcastic, witty streak to him, particularly towards Jean-Bob.

Gamera

What was the name of the turtle monster in Godzilla? - Quora

Gamera is a Kaiju created by the Daiei Motion Picture Company and now owned by Kadokawa Pictures. The original 1965 Gamera was released to rival the success of Toho Studios’ Godzilla during the “monster boom” of the 1960s. The character has gained fame and notoriety as a Japanese icon in his own right.

Michelangelo

Michelangelo - Ninja Turtles - TMNT Characters - Nick.com

Physically the smallest of the Turtles and the least mature, Mikey is easily distracted and enthusiastic about… well, pretty much everything. He’s also extremely creative. He has a thousand ideas, and every now and then, one of them will be brilliant. This combination of creativity and lack of focus gives him a kind of “flow” that the other Turtles cannot match. He’s a social mutant and more than the others, pines to be part of the real world.

“Mikey here. I’m definitely the funnest of all my brothers. I love video games, skateboarding, pranking my brothers and duh, pizza!! Who does NOT like New York City Style Pizza? I mean, THEY’RE THE BEST!!! Speaking of pizza… I’m hungry.”
