Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ is slated for for July Release

Christopher Nolan’s time-bending thriller will release on 17 July 2020.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that Tenet is still on the charts for a theatrical release this summer, given that theaters are back open for business.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff spoke about the studio’s commitment to the cinematic experience, as she described Tenet as a “tentpole title” that is slated for the big screen once it is permissible for audiences to resume social activity and the lockdown is lifted.

“We are committed to — and are excited about — releasing Tenet in theaters this summer or whenever theaters reopen. We remain supportive of the theatrical experience and our exhibition partners, and are confident that our tentpole titles, including Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984, are exactly the type of films that will have people eager to return to theaters,” she told the outlet.

In the last few months, Warner Bros. has made changes to its release schedule as a result of the COVID-19 global crisis, but Christopher Nolan’s time-bending thriller has managed to hold on to its July 17 release slot, making it potentially one of the first big blockbuster-hopefuls to be released this summer.

With the halting of cinema chains around the world, film studios have been compelled to review their plans on whether to postpone the release of their upcoming titles or shift some of these releases to VOD (video on demand).

Movies like Scoob! have been cancelled in favour of a VOD debut while In the heights movie has been postponed to next year. The Batman has been pushed to 1 Octoer 2021 and Wonder Woman 1984 is salted for release on 14 August 2020. The Flash has moved forward to 3 June 2022, while Shazam 2 has been postponed from April 1, 2022 to November 4, 2022. Plus, David Chase’s The Sopranos prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, has been moved from 25 September 2020 to 12 March 2021.

‘Doreamon’ and ‘Chhota Bheem’ rule the screen amidst lockdown

With schools closed early due to the growing horrifying scenario in the entire world, it has been a task for parents to keep the kids occupied at home and make them aware of the current situation. There are no second thoughts that screen time has increased in every household, making it easy for all to pass the time. The pandemic has forced the content creators to provide the audience with new, fresh content and make their mark in the growing competitive digital world.

Television, which was losing its charm because of the OTT crowd, now has a new profound place in everybody’s schedule. Be it the repeat telecast of the old loved Ramanayan, Mahabharata or Shaktiman. With the adults enjoying their childhood shows again, kids are busy with their favourite Doreamon and Chhota Bheem, suggests study from research insights by Thinking Hats Consumer Insights.

Boy watching television and girl using digital tablet in living room at home

Thinking Hats conducted a digital survey across four diverse geographies including Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Lucknow. The team came to the conclusion that during covid-19 lockdown, watching TV contributes to the highest spent time among other activities. Average 3.6 hours are spent daily watching TV against 1.4 hours earlier, before lockdown.

Playing games on mobile phones ranks third amongst other activities. Currently, time spent has gone up to average 1.6 hours, which was 43 mins earlier. Content consumption on OTT platforms has increased by 29 mins during the lockdown, with time spent on social media doubling to an hour as compared to 30 minutes before lockdown.

While watching TV alone, kids channels were watched the most (81 per cent) followed by Hindi Gec (37 per cent), Infotainment channels (29 per cent) and Hindi Movies (18 per cent). Hungama (31 per cent), Sab TV (30 per cent) and Cartoon Network (28 per cent) are kids’ most liked channels, during the quarantine.

Doreamon (26 per cent), Taraak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma (26 per cent) and Chhota Bheem (19 per cent) are the top three TV shows that kids like watching the most. With the insights received, we can see that content on TV is most liked or viewed by parents and kids alike, comprising 97 per cent of the consumption, followed by art/ craft content (two per cent), infotainment (one per cent) and movies (one per cent).

According to the survey by Thinking Hats, 64 per cent parents are finding it very difficult to keep their child engaged during the lockdown. 85 per cent parents from Mumbai and Bengaluru are highly concerned about their kids engagement in various activities, whereas 75 per cent parents of kids between age group six to nine are concerned about the activity engagement too. Apart from the screen time, parents are trying to indulge kids in other activities like playing indoor games, creating art and craft items and reading books.

Netflix will stream all episodes of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ 15 May onwards

Netflix has announced that it has taken up all the seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender that will begin streaming on the platform on 15 May in the U.S.

The popular animated show, Avatar: The Last Airbender, follows the adventures of Aang, the show’s namesake Avatar, as he masters the elements of water, earth, fire, and air and helps stop the Fire Nation’s war against the world. It originally aired on Nickelodeon from February 2005 to July 2008.

It’s not the first time that Netflix has shown interest in this property. In fact,  the streaming giant is currently working on a live-action adaptation of the show (which is expected to be better than the M. Night Shyamalan movie version). In addition to that, Netflix’s The Dragon Prince, was co-created by Avatar: The Last Airbender screenwriter Aaron Ehasz.

Netflix has been upping its investment in animation and children’s content to compete with other popular streaming platforms for kids such as Disney Plus and YouTube. The authorities also hinted at more animated projects in the Q1 earnings call.

Earlier this year, Netflix had acquired rights to stream 21 Studio Ghibli movies outside North America. In the US, these legendary films will be streaming on WarnerMedia’s new streaming service HBO Max, which launches on 27 May.

Esports is officially coming to ‘Call of Duty: Mobile’ with $1 mn prize pool

Call of Duty: Mobile is hosting its first esports tournament, Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship 2020, in collaboration with Sony Mobile. The tournament will begin on 30 April and it has a total prize pool of over $1 million.

The free-to-play, mobile Call of Duty spinoff became a breakout hit last year, racking up a staggering 100 million downloads in its first week of availability. And while mobile titles are far from a major force in esports, other big games have made similar forays into the field, including PUBG Mobile and Supercell titles like Clash Royale and Brawl Stars.

To participate in the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship 2020, players need to be ranked Veteran or higher in Multiplayer and be at least 18 years of age. Considering that the tournament begins on April 30, players still have time to reach Veteran rank by playing matches in the Ranked Mode. Activision will be announcing additional details about the tournament soon.

Call of Duty: Mobile’s twitter account teased: “Esports is officially coming to Call of Duty: Mobile! Check back soon for more news and specifics. For now, practice up and get ready.”

Call of Duty: Mobile is currently running the Crescent Moon event, which adds new cosmetic items along with Gun Game Team Fight mode.

Rewards will be earned for registration, progression through the qualifier and an additional reward if you eventually qualify. These rewards are changed every weekend so, even if you’ve already qualified, it’d be worthwhile to check back to seek out any other rewards.

Details on Stage 2 are to be shared at a later date through Activision’s official site.

Netflix earns 15.77 mn subscribers in Q1; expects to provide quality content in 2020-2021 despite COVID disruption

Netflix has witnessed a massive increase in its subscriber growth 15.77 million paid subscribers in the first quarter (Q1) of 2020. Contributing to this 23 per cent jump in subscriber growth in comparison to that of last year, is the worldwide lockdown imposed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. It earlier expected the subscriber growth to be 7 million.

The streaming giant has also seen a 110 per cent increase in time spent with a 50.71 per cent increase in engagement rate and 54.80 per cent increase in active user count (according to Bobble AI report).

However, Netflix is practical enough to expect a decline in viewing and growth in the near future when the lockdown will be lifted with progress against COVID-19.

“Like other home entertainment services, we’re seeing temporarily higher viewing and increased membership growth… We expect viewing to decline and membership growth to decelerate as home confinement ends, which we hope is soon,” it mentioned in the letter to its shareholders.

Having added so many new subscribers, technically Netflix was supposed to exceed its revenue and EPS expectations as well. But that wasn’t the case. According to the company, the impact of the strengthening U.S. dollar versus other foreign currencies, and a $218 million charge for pausing productions, along with a hardship fund commitment, put a dent in the service’s bottom line. “In our case, this is offset by a sharply stronger US dollar, depressing our international revenue, resulting in revenue-as-forecast,” the letter informed.

It further added, “Our internal forecast and guidance is for 7.5 million global paid net additions in Q2. Given the uncertainty on home confinement timing, this is mostly guesswork. The actual Q2 numbers could end up well below or well above that, depending on many factors including when people can go back to their social lives in various countries and how much people take a break from television after the lockdown.”

Reed Hastings

Some of the lockdown growth will turn out to be pull-forward from the multi-year organic growth trend, resulting in slower growth after the lockdown is lifted country-by-country. Intuitively, the person who didn’t join Netflix during the entire confinement is not likely to join soon after the confinement.

Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings later said in an earnings call that the long-term implication is still tough to predict as the world is grappling with uncertainty. But he also added that they are certain about the increase in “internet entertainment’s” in people’s lives, which will be gradually more important in the next five years.

“The things we are certain of is the Internet is growing. It’s a bigger part of people’s lives, thankfully. And people want entertainment. They want to be able to escape and connect, whether times are difficult or joyous. That’s pulling up. We’ve had an increase in subscriber growth in March. It’s essentially a pull forward of the rest of the year. So our guess is that subs will be light in Q3 and Q4 relative to prior years because of that. But we don’t use the words guess and guesswork lightly. We use them because it’s a bunch of us feeling the wind, and it’s hard to say. But again, will Internet entertainment be more and more important over the next five years? Nothing has changed in that,” said Hastings.

Along with subscriber numbers, Netflix also published its Q1 revenue which was $5.77 billion, while net income stood at $709 million with EPS of $1.57. The company’s stock was still down nearly 3 per cent in early trading on 22 April.

However, with productions around the world being temporarily paused, the streaming powerhouse is going to have to keep up with lack of fresh content in the near future when it doesn’t have any new shows to roll out. Owing to this situation, it may not have any new shows in the later half of the year.

In response to this crisis, naturally there will be less cash spending this year as some content projects are pushed out. This will shift out some cash spending on content to future years. Netflix hopes this dynamic may result in more lumpiness in its path to sustained free cash flow profitability.

Commenting on the impact of production stoppage, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos noted, “The one thing that’s not widely understood is that we work really far out, relative to the industry, because we launch our shows with all episodes at once, and we’re working far out all over the world. So our 2020 slate of series and films are largely shot, and we are in post production remotely in locations all over the world. So, and we’re actually pretty deep into our 2021 slate. So we’re not anticipating big moving things around. And to give you some examples, The Crown, in its fourth season; our big fourth quarter animated release, Over the Moon. These are shot productions in our in the finishing stages right now to release later this year as planned. So we don’t anticipate moving the schedule around much and certainly not in 2020.”

Ted Sarandos

For Q2, Netflix is looking forward to releasing all its originally planned shows and films with some language dubbing impacts on a few titles. They’re also finding ways to bolster its programming this year – including the recent acquisition of Paramount’s and Media Rights Capital’s The Lovebirds, a comedy starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, for Q2 and Legendary Pictures’ Enola Holmes starring Millie Bobby Brown, Helena Bonham Carter, Henry Cavill, and Sam Claflin, for Q3 2020. So, while it’s certainly impacted by the global production pause, it expects to continue to be able to provide a wide variety of new titles and quality throughout 2020 and 2021.

Still, the streaming giant remains equally uncertain about when production will resume. But it has emphasised that it will look for the ability to test for the virus, work with production partners and local governments. It will also try to learn from its current experiences in Iceland and South Korea where productions are still on and will apply the same to other geographies, as Sarandos shared.
