‘Tom & Jerry’ animator passes away at the age of 95

No matter where you grew as a kid, Tom & Jerry was a huge part of growing up. It was and still is everybody’s favourite. The man who created those illustrations and brought us our beloved Tom, Jerry, Popeye, passed away on 16 April. Gene Deitch was 95.

The artist passed away Thursday night in Prague, where he lived with his wife and fellow animator Zdenka Najmanova. The news was shared with the Czech News Agency (CTK) by Garamond publishing house owner Petr Himel. The label published Deitch’s memoirs, For the Love of Prague, in 2018.

Deitch was born in Chicago on 8 August 1924. After graduating, he began working as a draftsman for North American Aviation. He was drafted and entered pilot training, but was discharged due to pneumonia in 1944. Deitch re-entered the commercial art world, contributing cover and interior illustrations to jazz magazine The Record Changer.

He worked at iconic mid-century studio UPA before becoming creative director of Terrytoons (under 20th Century Fox), creating characters like Sidney the Elephant, Gaston Le Crayon, Clint Clobber and Terr’ble Thompson.

Deitch set up his own New York studio, Gene Deitch Associates, which primarily produced commercials. With the promise of funding for his theatrical short concept Munro, Deitch relocated to Prague in communist Czechoslovakia in late 1959.

Munro won the Oscar for Animated Short Film in 1961, becoming the cartoon produced outside the U.S. to earn the honor. Deitch worked with the film’s backers Rembrandt Films through the ’60s to produce Popeye TV cartoons with King Features and a dozen Tom and Jerry shorts for MGM. Deitch co-produced and directed a series of King Features’ Krazy Kat shorts for TV with William Snyder, with whom he also created his original kids’ series The Bluffers and directed Alice of Wonderland in Paris (1966).

One Piece Anime to take a break amidst coronavirus pandemic

Having recently celebrated its 20th Anniversary, One piece  has seldom taken time off for its weekly release schedule. Unfortunately in the wake of this pandemic, Toei Animation has announced that production on the One Piece anime will be suspended for the foreseeable future. After a report surfaced earlier this week noting that this might be the case, it was officially confirmed through an official statement from Toei Animation themselves.

Toei Animation’s statement reads, “Due to the state of emergency in Japan caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have carefully considered the safety measures for the spread and have decided to suspend the simulcast and Japanese broadcasting of both “One Piece” & our new series, “Digimon Adventure:” for the time being. Updates on the return of both series will be provided as soon as we know. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time. Please stay safe and healthy.”

Considering that the weekly schedule of the anime would likely to be impossible to maintain, this hiatus was unfortunately expected. This probably won’t be the last anime to be suspended at this time, but it’s definitely going to upset fans given that the anime is now covering the second act of the Wano Country arc.

Fans would indeed understand that the team behind One Piece and those at Toei Animation have to be kept safe and healthy throughout this time as well. Even though this hiatus will definitely hurt, it’s for the best as it means that less people are at the risk of transmission of the COVID-19 disease.

IBF requests economic relief package for the broadcast sector

The Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) has urged the government for support to deal with the economic crises in the television broadcast sector due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

The organisation has written a letter to information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar mentioning a number of requests.

N.P.Singh

IBF president N P Singh commented on the present scenario, “The outbreak of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown have posed several challenges for the Television Broadcast Sector. With complete cessation of production of television shows, cancellations of live sporting events and scheduled advertisements, advertisement bookings nosediving by 50 per cent; delays in payments by advertising agencies/advertisers and distribution platform operators, the Broadcast sector is facing the brunt of the slowdown”.

Here are the requests IBF made in the letter :

  • Regulatory moratorium for the sector for at least next 18 months.
  • Phased resumption of production activities.
  • Extension of moratorium period for GST payment.
  • Mandating digital payments of subscription and advertising dues to broadcasters.
  • Advisory to DPOs in respect of release of payment of subscription fees for the period upto 29 Feb 2020
  •  Waiver of processing fee and temporary live uplinking fee for live sporting events for a period of one year from the resumption of normal business activities.
  • Increase in time period of one year to two years for operationalisation of new channels which have been granted permission.
  • Suspension of requirement of Performance Bank Guarantees in respect of channels sought to be launched for a period of one year.
  • Waiver of Carriage Fee due to Prasar Bharati for three months (April, May and June) for FTA channels on Prasar Bharati’s Free Dish Platform.
  • Deferment of payment due to Prasar Bharati for Free Dish carriage by 31 March 2020 will be deferred until July 2020.
  • All pending refunds even exceeding Rs. 5 Lacs should be urgently processed.
  • The 1st instalment of advance tax (due on 15 June 2020) should be done away with and taxpayers be allowed to pay the 2nd instalment (due on 15 September 2020) directly without any interest liability
  • The due date for deposit of TDS for the months of March and April 2020 should be extended to 31 May 2020 without any interest liability.
  • Extension /waiver of permission for FX payments for foreign satellite transponder hiring.
  • Lower rate of TDS from 10 per cent to two per cent on subscription revenues
  • Payment of stamp duty on agreements should be deferred upto expiry of ninety (90) days’ from the date of lifting of nation-wide lockdown.
  • Allow discharge of GST reverse charge obligation through GST input credit rather than paying in cash.
  • Extend all existing stay of income tax demand for next six months without any new hearing.

“Moreover, while we welcome the compliance and statutory relaxations granted by the Government in its latest notification of 15 April, the Broadcast Sector is seeking a stimulus package from the Government in the form of economic relief and regulatory flexibility so that all Broadcasters especially the smaller businesses can be helped to get back on track. IBF has also requested the Government for reduction in GST rate on Digital services (B2C), automatic refund of input credit and immediate processing and issuance of Lower withholding order (LTDS),” added he.

IBF suggests that the broadcasting sector has been affected badly on both the demand and supply side which has not only led to cash flow problems but has also resulted in existential crisis for many of IBF’s members. IBF members’ cash flow difficulties are further compounded because payments from Bureau of Outreach and Communication (BOC) and other State Government Advertising Agencies/Advertisers running in several hundreds of crores have not been received and IBF has sought MIB’s intervention in expediting these payments.

The Government has notified “Print and Electronic Media including broadcasting, DTH and cable services” as one of the “Essential Services” during the lockdown period.  However, with employees unable to go to work because of commute restrictions and production schedules halted for programming across the sector, providing uninterrupted entertainment and news to the viewers is posing a challenge to broadcasters.

Singh further stated, “IBF has submitted a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on prevention/safety measures for organised, safe and sustainable re-start of Content Production, Media Operations, Transmission and General Office Operations in the TV Broadcast Sector to the PMO, Niti Aayog and MIB. The SOP will help the sector to move quickly towards normalcy and we certainly hope that the Government would consider it favourably”.

The directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has not percolated to the District level officers, as a result, the employees involved in the day to-today operations of the broadcasting industry are facing problems in commuting to their workplace.  This needs to be urgently looked at by the respective State Governments to ease out the operations after strictly following the Standard Operating Procedures as envisaged in the IBF Submission to the Government and also other stringent measures undertaken by the Central and State Governments.

Three Cosmos-Maya shows find home in Disney India this summer

With Disney India premiering 100 hours of fresh content, three of the shows on the list – Guddu, Bapu and Gadget Guru Ganesha, are produced by Cosmos-Maya. With these three shows, Disney India is capitalising on the Cosmos-Maya’s diverse offerings.

With the addition of these IP’s, the Singapore and India based animation studio, Cosmos-Maya will now have 20 of its own produced series IP’s airing worldwide now. The three shows will also be launching digitally on a leading OTT platform soon.

‘Bapu’

This comes soon after two other Cosmos-Maya IPs, Titoo and Lambuji Tinguji were greenlit by Turner India for their channels Cartoon Network and Pogo.

Commenting on the shows taken up by Disney India, Cosmos-Maya CEO Anish Mehta said, “We are very happy with this development and our heartfelt thanks goes out to Disney India. Both parties have tasted great success with the very popular show Selfie With Bajrangi, and just like Bajrangi, these three shows are also in line with Cosmos-Maya’s USP of ‘Novelty with Relatability’. Our concerted efforts to bring joy and cheer to our young viewers have neared fruition and we are excited. For a studio the size of Cosmos-Maya, it was no small task to keep operations running, but crisis or no crisis, the show must go on. We have kept production operations running remotely from home to ensure that children are kept engaged and entertained at home.”

‘Guddu’

Guddu chronicles the exploits of the anthropomorphic circus lion Guddu, a spin-off character from the very popular Motu Patlu franchise. The show pushes the envelope of 3D animation quality with never seen before visuals.

Bapu, the first of its kind IP inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, tells the story of a wise elder of a contemporary neighborhood in the modern world. Bapu and his three monkeys always endeavour to help kids face their problems, right wrongs and add a positive spin to adversity.

Both Guddu and Bapu have been directed by Suhas Kadav, who is also the director of the Motu Patlu franchise.

Gadget Guru Ganesha is a slice of life buddy comedy set on a quintessential Indian family and beautifully encapsulates the nuances of Indian culture in an entertaining format. It is directed by Dheeraj Berry, the director of Selfie With Bajrangi.
