Mixing C4D, Charcoal, and Cel Animation for Thom Yorke’s “Last I Heard”

Thom Yorke’s “Last I Heard” Music Video Director Saad Moosajee and Designer Zuheng Yin on using 3D and 2D to capture the Radiohead frontman’s dreams.

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke released his third solo album, ANIMA, last summer along with a short Netflix film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. He followed it up late last year with the release of a haunting video for the track “Last I Heard (…He Was Circling the Drain)”.

The dreamy black-and-white video was created at New York City-based experimental studio, Art Camp. It opens on a city in chaos and intermittently follows a spacesuit-wearing character through a dystopian landscape filled with faceless crowds, enormous fires and floating cars and debris.

Directed by Art Camp & Saad Moosajee, the video was inspired by Yorke and Radiohead artist Stanley Donwood’s imaginations and contains over 3,000 hand-illustrated and textured frames made using a combination of Cinema 4D, Houdini, charcoal, dust, paint primer and cel animation.

The approach is similar to the one Moosajee and Art Camp took when creating the video for Mitski’s, “A Pearl”. Only this time, an array of artists combined additional techniques and tools, including volumetric lighting, crowd simulation, powder texturing, charcoal washing and VDB. Yorke released the video with an immersive installation during a three-day event in Los Angeles hosted by ANIMA Technologies in October.

“In some ways, the direction for this was looser than what we got for “A Pearl”, Moosajee explains. “Thom told us about some images from his dreams and about how this would relate to the world of ANIMA, which is quite dark, and “Last I Heard” was written with London in mind.” So the brief was focused on creating a video with the look of an old black-and-white film that captured the feeling of anxiety and loneliness that often goes with big cities, like London or New York.

An Ever-Changing Process

Using some of Donwood’s Radiohead artwork, black-and-white photography and old NASA photos for reference, the team expanded on Yorke’s vision, giving each person an opportunity to contribute creatively across different mediums. Though they had only about two and a half months from start to finish, the team felt it was important to experiment and see what worked, so they switched up the process and remade the video over and over again before feeling like they got it right.

3D designer and animator Zuheng Yin worked closely with Moosajee to define the look of the video. “For a music video like this, we felt it was important to attract people from the beginning,” he explains, “Monochrome, film grain, and texture that felt human worked quite well in the context of showing Thom’s world. The visual language became more and more unique by layering our craft.”

To ensure a sense of realism and the look of an old film, the team opted to anchor much of their process in 3D. But, to make things “less perfect,” they used volumetrics and VDB in Cinema 4D, Octane and Houdini to create a layered atmosphere and light the world on fire. “I would often place lights behind animating pyro and fog containers so you would get natural flicker, diffusion and a sort of time-lapse sun effect,” Moosajee recalls. For a grainier look, the team made sure renders were never fully clean and contained noise in the images and volumes, while not being so grainy that they messed up the animation.

Though it looks like a film, nothing was practically shot for the video. Instead, the team designed and modeled the characters in C4D themselves, using motion capture to make characters’ movements look natural. Houdini based crowd simulations were populated with characters modeled in 3D by the team and outfitted using Marvelous Designer, so they would all be visually unique.

To build up the world further, the crowds were placed into custom-designed sets that were often interspersed with traffic simulations.

“Traffic is a big part of every city, and I imagined that the traffic structures inside of the ANIMA universe would follow real-world behavior, but would be just a little off,” Zuheng says. After creating a simulation with real-world behavior inside of Cinema 4D, he distorted it by pulling the road off the ground, deleting the traffic guides and silhouetting the moving cars to accentuate the negative space between vehicles and the city behind them.

Combining Mediums for Maximum Effect

To get the look they wanted for “Last I Heard (…He Was Circling the Drain)”, the team opted for a highly textural approach, using charcoal, paints, ink and powders. “We would print out 3D renders, sprinkle crushed powder over them, and brush on a mix of charcoal and water,” Moosajee explains. In certain scenes, for extra grittiness and texture, they first brushed on oil paint primer before using the charcoal wash. The effect added to the painted feel of the video, with the goal being to give every scene its own unique style based on what was happening in the shot.

From a directing and animating standpoint, Moosajee found the team’s constant reinvention of the pipeline an interesting challenge that worked because everyone was very dedicated and flexible. “One week we’d go, ‘Okay the video is going to be stylized 3D with detailed 2D’. Then the next week we’d say, ‘no the video’s going to be 3D and should feel like film photography with accents of 2D.’”

What they eventually settled on was developing specific media combinations and software pipelines on a shot-by-shot basis, so the balance was always changing in the video. “Our animators and designers enjoyed the back and forth because we were all exploring different ways to build the world together,” Moosajee recalls. “I really think you need to give your team agency to contribute to the style whenever you can because that’s when people do their best work.

DreamWorks Animation names Jenny Marchick as head of feature development

DreamWorks Animation has brought on board Jenny Marchick as the head of feature development.

Marchick, who previously served as Sony Pictures Animation creative SVP, will spearhead building of DreamWorks’ slate of animated films. DreamWorks is producing two to three films a year that are distributed by Universal. To keep up that pace, the company is looking to expand its pipeline.

Starting today, 3 February, Marchick will be responsible for finding and developing projects as well as identifying key talents. She will lead a team which will develop a wide range of films drawing from known IP and books as well as original ideas. Marchick will also supervise the creative direction and production of the studio’s active development slate.

DreamWorks’ Features chief creative officer Kristin Lowe said in a statement, “Marchick’s extensive experience in animation and enthusiasm for storytelling make her the perfect addition to the DreamWorks Animation team. Her instincts and talents are extraordinary as well as her notable contacts with world-class talent in the animation community.”

While at SPA, Marchick looked after the creative direction and production of Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, among other projects. Before that, she worked as a development executive in the live-action sphere, including on movies such as Beverly Hills Chihuahua and The Proposal, by Disney and Mandeville Films, and Date Night and Knight and Day, made by 20th Century Fox.

DreamWorks’ upcoming films include Trolls World Tour and The Croods 2 in 2020, along with The Boss Baby 2, Spirit Riding Free and The Bad Guys in 2021.

Budget 2020 highlights initiatives under ‘New Economy’

It has been a leap of faith for the media and entertainment industry, which is now transcending towards digital. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a host of initiatives under ‘New Economy’. Some of the steps include the creation of National Mission on Quantum Technologies and applications with an outlay of proposed Rs 8,000 crore proposed. Roll out of a policy to enable the private sector to build Data Centre parks throughout the country. “It will enable our firms to skilfully incorporate data in every step of their value chains,” FM said. Further, the government plans for Fibre to the Home (FTTH) connections through Bharatnet which will link 100,000-gram panchayats this year. It has proposed to provide Rs 6,000 crore to Bharatnet programme in 2020-21.

A tax-relief was announced including simplified tax processes. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman slashed the personal income tax rate for individuals for fiscal year 2020-21. Under the new regime, taxpayers will pay 10 per cent for income between 5 to 7.5 lakh, 15per cent for income between 7.5 to 10 lakh , 20 per cent for income between 10 to 12.5 lakh and 25 per cent for incomes between 12.5 to 15 lakh. However, to avail this scheme, which is optional, therefore, taxpayers will have to let go of exemptions. A taxpayer charter was proposed as well. An International bullion exchange to be set up at the IFSC in GIFT was also announced. Apart from modifying the definition of an NRI, non taxpaying NRIs would be taxed in India if not paying taxes elsewhere.

Disney and Marvel drop new teasers at Super Bowl

Marvel Studios have unveiled a brand new teaser for its upcoming three Disney+ series at their Big Super Bowl advertising spot. Though much footage wasn’t revealed, the teaser includes clips from the Falcon and Winter Soldier, Loki and WandaVision.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier saw Anthony Mackie’s Sam ‘Falcon’ Wilson pick up Captain America’s shield and maneuver around with it. The series takes up from where Avengers: Endgame ended with Steve Rogers handing over his Captain America shield to Sam, as Steve Rogers’ best friends try to navigate a world devoid of him. The show brings back Mackie’s Wilson and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky ‘Winter Soldier’ Barnes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The teaser also showed a glimpse of Zemo’s return, the villain made famous in Captain America: Civil War (2016).

WandaVisions footage showed off scenes of Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany’s Vision interacting with each other in a house. The show was previously teased at Disney’s D23 convention and will focus on their relationship. Loki had the least amount of screen time, but showed actor Tom Hiddleston back in the role.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is one of two big Marvel series hitting Disney+ this year. The company previously announced that WandaVision would receive a 2020 release date, earlier than its original 2021 release date. Both WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier will tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel fans are eagerly waiting for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as Marvel’s first big Disney+ series. Since the launch of Disney+, the integration between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the TV shows will be very crucial going forward. Kevin Feige, the MCU Boss, now looks after all of Marvel Entertainment both cinematically and television. Prior to the Disney+ launch, Jeph Loeb supervised the various Marvel shows on various Disney networks, and streaming services like Hulu and Netflix, which changed late last year. Besides these three, Hawkeye, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Moonknight are slated in the coming years.

Apart from the Disney+ series, Marvel also launched another teaser of Black Widow at the new Super Bowl TV spot, which aired on 2 February. Black Widow marks the beginning of Phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will show Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff after the events of Captain America : Civil War (2016). 

The new trailer also gives fans a closer look at David Harbour as the fatherly character Alexei Shostakov, also known as the Red Guardian, as well as Rachel Weisz as the character Melina. 

Disney has also launched the trailer of the live-action adaptation of Mulan at their Super Bowl spot. The official synopsis goes:  When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honoured warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested at every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father. 

Mulan features a celebrated international cast including – Yifei Liu as Mulan, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. The film is directed by Niki Caro from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek based on the narrative poem ‘The Ballad of Mulan’.

Monster Entertainment to launch new slate at Kidscreen

Dublin based distributor, Monster Entertainment will launch a slate of new programming at Kidscreen in Miami next month. Koyaa and The Annoying Objects, 13 x 3.5 mins for four to eight year olds, is a fantastic, energetic stop motion animation series from Slovenia and was commissioned by RTV Slovenia. Koyaa lives on a rocky ledge high above the clouds in a mountain cottage with his best friend Mr Raven. Their days are bursting with action and wacky adventure! Ordinary objects keep coming to life around Koyaa, causing all kinds of trouble. Koyaa has been licensed to Noorplay for VOD.

Tommy & Robbie, a 52 x 4 mins for ages three to seven years, is commissioned by Nickelodeon Latin America. It revolves around two crazy cuddly creatures with extremely opposite personalities living and doing everything together and features an unlikely friendship of one lazy and one very active and eager friend, creating some hilarious scenes.

New programming, screened for the first time will also feature:

Urban Tails, 52 x 2 mins, for four to six year olds has been sold to Azoomee and HMH’s Curious WorldProduced by Ireland’s Pink Kong, in each episode a different urban animal introduces itself in a hip-hop video. The series was commissioned by RTE and financed by Screen Ireland and S. 481, the Irish tax incentive.

Cocoland, a 26 x 5 mins series, for three to six year olds, has been sold to HMH’s Curious World and Kidoodle. Coming from Costa Rica’s Rocket Cartoons, the series is set in a beautiful town in the Caribbean where our group of friends learn soft skills such as empathy

Wow! Wow! Rolling Friends, a 26 x 11 mins for three to six year olds is from Korea’s Flying Pig. The series is set in a magical world where everything is made out of bricks. Everyday problems are solved by creativity and constructing something which helps solve the problem. This series has been sold to Discovery MENA.

Wackyland Monsterland, 26 x 11 mins, for six to 11 year olds, was commissioned by Nickelodeon Latin America. Produced by Brazil’s 44 Toons, the series main character, Otto, must try to find a way of living a normal-ish life in Wackyland, which can change randomly into Monsterland, and vice versa.

Monster will also be searching for pre-sales to close out the financing for Farmer Mo, 26 x 7 mins for three to six year olds, which has already been pre-sold to YLE and SVT. This is the next series from Ireland’s Wiggleywoo, the producers of The Day Henry Met…..which Monster has sold in 178 countries. Ceska Televize is the latest broadcaster to pick up all four seasons of Henry and De Agostini in Italy have joined the growing international publishing programme.

India’s first comic app, Kross Komics gets 200k downloads in just six weeks

India’s first of its kind destination for comic lovers, Kross Komics is the newest way of storytelling which diversifies your imagination, giving you an all-new experience of the comic world. After being out on Google Playstore for just six weeks, the app has already garnered 200,000 downloads.

Talking to AnimationXpress, Kross Komics president and CEO Hyunwoo Thomas Kim said, “When I came to India five years ago, I went to a local book store and was surprised to see comics being targeted only to kids. And, that was the beginning of my journey of bringing comics for Indian adults.”

Kim assembled the team last year and finally launched India’s first webtoon app at the Comic Con on 7 December 2019. The target market for the app is generally between 15 to 24 year old youths, particularly females.

The first batch of comics includes 40 titles, all from Korea, but by the end of 2020, the Kross Komics team plans to get on board 100 titles from Korea, China and Japan. The app covers around nine genres covering horror, romantic, comedy, action, thriller, sci-fi, mystery, and drama, available in English and Hindi.

“Siddharth is a comic fan and so are his team members. His job here is to work on getting local Indian artists on board. I can bring expertise and experience of creating webtoon and what he can bring passionate individual artists. Then we can combine the passion, artwork and the expertise to create something that does not exist yet in India,” Kim added.

Kross Komics Indian representative Siddharth Raikar will look after the marketing strategies to make the app reach a larger number of audience. “Marketing for a category which is till date known only for kids and making it known to adults is a big challenge, but we will be tackling that. Eventually we will be looking at getting local artists onboard with original stories having Indian context.”

Kim started off in India as a producer and has worked with big names from the Bollywood industry. The third phase for the company is to produce the popular local comic titles into films. “If all three phases take off, we will have a very effective content ecosystem,” he mentioned.

After interacting with Indian youth and thorough research, Kim thinks that India is a perfect market for this app as the youth here is not yet exposed to webtoons. Another reason to bring the app to India according to Kim is to make an ecosystem for the artists, where they are respected and recognised as professionals.

What inspires you to design creatures?

Well, my first source of inspiration is the love for animal kingdom. From photography to documentaries, everything regarding creatures motivate me.

Tell us about journey as a creature artist. I’m an Italian 3D artist currently living in Thailand with my wife and soulmate Silvia, who also works with me as a key artist. Interestingly enough, I owned a bookstore before fully committing myself to CG. While I was selling books, my passion for computer graphics kept growing and growing. Unlike today, online resources were scarce back then, so I read every CG magazine I could get my hands on, cover to cover. At the same time, I began learning 2D and 3D software myself. I still remember Rhino 1.0 being my starting point, then later moving to Maya. I’m entirely self-taught. At some point in the early 2000s, together with my wife I decided to sell the bookstore and pursue a professional career as a 3D artist, so I started building my portfolio and looking for freelance jobs.

What softwares do you mainly make use of?

My primary 3D software is Maya, I use Zbrush and Mudbox for sculpting and texturing and Shave and a Haircut for grooming. Arnold and Redshift as renderer.

What are the current trends that you are witnessing in the CG ecosystem?

This is a complex question. I can see the use of CG is growing in every field, but there are also many people approaching to this world hence the competition is becoming fierce and will be tougher in the future. The big vfx companies kind of dominate the market, some of them use to mass training their employees in a way that the risk of saturation is pretty real.

Tell us a bit about your body of work.

As mentioned I’ve started my CG career in the early 2000. After building my portfolio I started looking for freelance jobs, I always preferred the freedom of being able to manage myself working as freelancer. One of my fondest memories is working as an external grooming artist for the Discovery Channel on a show titled Discovering Ardi.

It was about the sensational discovery of a 4.4 million-year-old skeleton of Ardipithecus ramus. Being involved in bringing this extinct primal ape back to life on the screen was an amazing experience, overall. In the years I’ve been lucky enough to have received many recognition. My first CGSociety and 3dtotal awards back in 2006 was thrilling, and so was seeing my works printed in magazines and books. This type of recognitions always motivated me to keep improving and helped me through tough times. Even though animals were always my first choice, I modeled pretty much everything. In the first years, I did a lot hard-surface modelling. As a third-party, I collaborated with various industries, working with clients such as Volkswagen, Hyundai, Siemens and Savstar Paris amongst others. Between projects, I decided to start building a model library. I started selling models online in 2005, today I have about 400 assets available for purchase directly through my website. I’ve been – and actually still- involved in films, commercials and documentaries as creature artist.

What would you like to say to the budding artists who want to design creatures as photorealistic as yours?

Most importantly, the ability to train yourself. You need to learn how to make good use of your eyes, understand how to observe and develop an attention for details. Experience comes with time, so this is a long and sometimes even tedious process. But one day, you will look back at your older works and think to yourself: “I can’t believe how much I’ve improved!” This type of comparison is the only way to effectively measure your progress. My advice is to find your own niche and style, It’s ok to start replicating other artists at the beginning and for practice, but once you feel ready try to differentiate and find your own path and follow your passion. This will drive you far, otherwise the risk is to become another copycat.

About the studio: Monky Ink Blots is a small scale startup one-man studio, owned by comic artist Ahmed Sikander that provides creative visualisation, graphic design and illustration services to clients as well as a platform to showcase his personal projects like paper-based products or comics.

Location: Bandra, Mumbai, Maharashtra

Projects: Comic illustrations for Inside India- children’s activity book series, comics for Lawtoons 2, storyboards and character designs for an explanatory video of NERL, caricatures for wedding invites, social media, and brand-related projects and many others.

What are the challenges faced by Indian comic artists? How do you overcome those?

There are a lot of factors to this both creatively and commercially, but I feel one of them is how to blend the script with the visuals to tell the story clearly. I feel studying a lot of storyboard artists and how they panel each from to show the flow of a movie would really help.

What message would you like to give to the comics enthusiasts?

Keep at creating a lot of visual content, understand the medium you are working on and as you progress, you will get better and better at it! “KEEP AT IT!”

“Overwhelmed at the response of Ahmedabad Comic Con…hope to enter Kolkata, Chennai and Pune by 2021”: Jatin Varma

Comic Con is rightly termed as the #BestWeekendOfTheYear, delivering unlimited fun, adventure, fervour to 1.2 million visitors at ‘India’s Greatest Pop Culture Experience’ for the past nine years. Comic Con India is the place for everyone to ‘Engage, Explore and Experience’ the best that modern pop-culture, literature, and films have to offer from India and the world. 

After Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, Ahmedabad witnessed its first ever edition of Comic Con at Gujarat University Convention and Exhibition Centre, Memnagar, Ahmedabad on 1 and 2 February. 

The first edition of Ahmedabad Comic Con was no less than a paradise for the city’s fandom community to witness and live the pop-culture extravaganza. Organised in association with Vodafone, the venue was packed with a massive gathering of passionate fans hovering around the stage, experiential zones and the exhibitor area to get their hands on artwork from their favorite illustrators and merchandises.

Excited on the first event, Comic Con India founder Jatin Varma earlier told AnimationXpress, “I have been super excited to host Ahmedabad’s first ever Comic Con! All our key partners have been lined up for the show and I hope it was a great experience for the fans in the city!”

The key highlights of Ahmedabad Comic Con were :

  • American comic book artist of Archie’s digest fame Dan Parent took the eager fans eager through his work on the comics and shares experience of creating the cover of the special Archie in the Incredible Comic Con India edition.  
  • Team Bakarmax launched its latest titles like Aap ki Poojita to Pitch Please and more!
  • Creator and publisher Vivek Goel launched Holy Cow Publishing’s latest – Age of Immortals and Shaitan
  • Professional and emerging cosplayers stole the show with their diverse and creative costumes for India’s biggest cosplay contest in Ahmedabad and the first round of Indian Championship of Cosplay 2019 Ahmedabad Qualifier 
  • Abhijeet Kini launched his brand new comic books – Ek Din Ka Hero, Fun Tales of India
  • Bullseye Press team’s latest comic series, Inferno became one of the crowd-pullers
  • Illusionist Karan Singh wowed the audience with his unique act at the main Arena Stage 
  • Sharleen Khan cosplaying as Yennefer from Witcher won the Ahmedabad Comic Con Cosplay Contest, with Akshay Churi cosplaying as Evil God Awakening Zinogre also qualifying from the city for the Indian Championship of Cosplay 2020 on the first day. 

Ahmedabad Comic Con also housed retail stalls by key exhibitors like The Souled Store, Funko by Wizplex, Planet Superheroes, Toki Doki, Printoctopus, XP Pen, Red Wolf Apparel and EFG Store all of them were a big hit with fans  who thronged the stalls to take home a memory of their Comic Con experience.

Excited about the success and response at Ahmedabad Comic Con, Varma added, “After establishing four successful properties, we have finally unveiled this brand new property and were absolutely overwhelmed to see the response that we were able to garner. By organising a pop culture convention in a city that swears by its vibrant social and cultural life, we were indeed able to connect with a majority and so far have managed to live up to all their expectations. I am quite overwhelmed with the response generated from the fans in Ahmedabad, which indicates that people in this country are finally identifying themselves with this pop culture. They are not just embracing the west-dominated movies, comics and games but are giving equal emphasis to Indian pop culture foundation, which is a great progress. Already waiting for the next edition with more surprises, performances, gaming, anime and cosplay showcase.”

The event also saw an exciting line-up of experiential zones like the Maruti Suzuki Arena Zone, Vodafone zone, Doritos, WWE, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman and Scoob by Warner Bros India and The Gaming Zone by E-Sports Club.

Talking about the much eventful year of Comic Con in 2019, Varma recalled in a candid chat with us, “2019 was a great year for us as we were able to grow the shows further not just in terms of size and scale, but visitors as well. From the organiser’s perspective, a key takeaway from us throughout the Comic Cons in different cities, was that fans wanted more experiences at the show as well as more entertainment oriented activities at our main stage. As we head into the 10th year of Comic Con India, these will be some of the key areas that we’ll be working upon.”

Varma also had a sweet surprise for us as well as pop-culture enthusiasts about further extension in more cities. Said he, “Yes [we want to enter more cities] for sure. We hope to enter Kolkata, Chennai and Pune by 2021.”
