Nickelodeon to ‘Just Add Magic’ internationally

Nickelodeon has acquired the international pay TV rights to Amazon Prime’s live-action series Just Add Magic from producer and distributor Sinking Ship Entertainment excluding the Americas and China. The 50 x 22-minute show started airing on Nickelodeon in the UK first, late last year and all other territories will follow throughout this year.

Aimed at kids between six to 11 year old, Just Add Magic is based on the Cindy Callaghan book of the same name and follows the adventures of three friends after they discover a recipe book full of magic recipes.

When Just Add Magic first launched, the show set a record for US Prime Video streams and hours watched, making its premiere weekend the most successful at the time for an Amazon Original Kids series. Amazon has since halted commissioning original kids programming.

In addition to the three existing seasons, a spin-off season entitled Just Add Magic: Mystery City is launching in early 2020 on Amazon followed by Nickelodeon later this year.

Coronavirus seems to have given rise to a new gaming trend

In the wake of the Coronavirus epidemic, doomsday games are topping the charts. Apps like Plague Inc. and Rebel Inc. top China’s iOS download chart recently.

What is Coronavirus ?

On 31 December 2019, WHO was alerted to several cases of pneumonia in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. The virus did not match any other known virus. This raised concern because when a virus is new, we do not know how it affects people.

One week later, on 7 January, Chinese authorities confirmed that they had identified a new virus. The new virus is a Coronavirus, which is a family of viruses that include the common cold, and viruses such as SARS and MERS. This new virus was temporarily named “2019-nCoV.”

Apparently according to CCN  report Chinese citizens are avoiding the SARS-like Coronavirus by playing doomsday games at home. They have extracted the data from mobile app analyst firm Sensor Tower, Chinese gamers are suddenly flocking to two mobile games from developer Ndemic Creations: Plague Inc. and Rebel Inc.

The developers behind Plague Inc took to Twitter to share some information, telling its players: “We’re getting a lot of questions about the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak- the World Health Organization has some great information.”

The scare of the epidemic has taken over the internet. Some user says, “This outbreak reminds me so much of Plague Inc. In fact, I feel like I’m in plague inc, and that kinda scares me.” Not only that another user named Sara said

Plague Inc. – a human annihilation strategy sim – jumped to the top of the Chinese iOS download chart on Wednesday.

In a rather unsettling parallel to real-world events, Plague Inc. tasks players with developing a pathogen. From there, they must spread it by avoiding treatment through mutations and upgrading the pathogen’s attributes.

Interestingly, Plague Inc. allows the player to control the spread of misinformation about the pathogen. It’s all rather apt given accusations that the Chinese authorities may be understating the Coronavirus epidemic. Or, at the very least, failing to quell fears as spurious rumors spread through the lack of a steady stream of correct information.

Rebel Inc., a geopolitical sim, sees players guide a failed nation back to its feet while warding off insurgent forces. The mobile game surged up the charts from 27th to fifth in the space of two days.

With the rising number of Coronavirus affected people WHO has been working with Chinese authorities and global experts from the day we were informed, to learn more about the virus, how it affects the people who are sick with it, how they can be treated, and what countries can do to respond.

Because this is a Coronavirus, which usually causes respiratory illness, WHO has advice to people on how to protect themselves and those around them from getting the disease.

Supari Studios has been nominated at the Digiday Video Awards

Supari Studios’ The Mind Behind, a three-episode documentary series with animation and post production by Post Office Studios is nominated in the Best Brand Film Series category at the Digiday Video Awards.

In collaboration with Red Bull Media House, the series delves deep into the minds of some of the most talented artists and athletes – rapper Emiway Bantai, chef Thomas Zacharias from The Bombay Canteen, and off-road racer CS Santosh – and explores how they react to extraordinary situations unique to their profession.

Told through a mix of live-action and animation, each episode has a run-time of 8-10 minutes, and offers a never-before-seen peek into the inner workings of the professional at the top of their game.

Post Office Studios lead designer and animator for the series Adarsh Panicker said, “Our creative team used a blend of Cel animation and 2D animation to tell these stories, each film, having its own unique art and animation style designed to fit seamlessly into the treatment and tone of the live-action shots.”

The episodes focus on a single theme – the way our minds work – and take on a filmmaking treatment most suited to capturing that featured character’s internal journey. This diverse treatment is tied together by one common thread: the fascinating capacity of the human mind to achieve remarkable things.

The other nominations include brands such as Ellen Digital Network and VH1.

Recently Animationxpress had an interaction with the GE:Rayne team captain Saloni ‘Meow16k’ Pawar who started her self-motivated gaming journey at the age of 15.

GE:Rayne team captain Saloni ‘Meow16k’ Pawar

Having started playing games for recreational purposes in between her studies, she eventually realised that there is a whole new world of gaming community where tournaments are held, greeting sessions follow and more importantly where the community comes together to congratulate the new and the best players in the regional platforms. Learning about gaming sparked her interest into taking up gaming as a profession.

Being a streamer, she realised that “not even a single streaming player is into the limelight so why not we be the first one? Initially I was not great at the game but I wanted to become better and better and that zeal pushed me to keep trying things to be at the number one position. Since last two years, I have been planning to be at this level and now after the tournaments were announced, so was the team, I never thought of leading an all girls team and become a professional in this segment. I initially thought of having a mixed team of boys and girls but God had other plans for me.”

What makes a team strong? Is it the bonding? The 20 year old captain of all girl team shared the backstory as to how they became a unit as GE: Rayne. Like any other game-buddy story, these girls connected over gaming.

Even though they were well-acquainted with each other for over three to four years, they had never thought of becoming a team.

“There has always been a mindset that maybe we will all have ego issue. May be they won’t be able to fit in with each other. We used to play together but we never thought of being in a unit and then actually went for all-girls line up. During that time, the Legion of Valkeries tournament was announced and two girls from the team were interested and asked me to play. I said yeah, why not?,”she added.

Ever since then, the journey for GE: Rayne started as they all liked the fact that they could play as a team so they not only participated in another tournament but also qualified for the same .

Despite securing the second positions at finals of LoV, they couldn’t
achieve the first place which left them broken and disappointed.

Ruefully so, they felt they could have done better with some practice.

“We did not even think that it was an achievement to come second as we were all disappointed about the round that we lost because of some silly mistake and it has revolving around our head and it was disappointing us,” shared she.

While they were in Thailand, they couldn’t connect with the community until the time they came to India. Elaborating on her experience, she noted, “We did not even realise actually that everyone was proud of us and we actually thought maybe we could have done better and maybe we could have won and made India more proud! As we came here, people were all chilled and were so happy and so proud. We realise that we have done something nice by securing the second position. This boosted us a lot, to be very honest. That time, we thought we are better players and we can do better and from then on, we have been putting more efforts as a team.”

Apart from tournaments, they started bonding over matches where they met and played games in the same gaming café. She added, “We had literally bonded while talking both in-game and off-game. No matter what happens in real life or gaming commercial life, we try to stay as transparent with each other and it has all happened after we decided to come together as a unit.”

Life is not a bed of roses as there are challenges everywhere. One of the inspiring and memorable gaming experiences for the team which she recalls was the second qualifier for the WESG where they wanted to win the game anyhow.

“Because it was a very renowned tournament qualifier and if we would have qualified then we would have been considered the best amongst the top players. So we wanted to win it anyhow no matter what. We really tried hard. It was a best of three events. First match we lost and we all were losing hope. Even I didn’t think I could get better. But towards the end, everyone performed so well and we ended up winning that qualifier and that was the best moment. And since then we started calling ourselves the comeback queens and we always have been doing our best in the times we seem to be losing.”

We also get to know that Pawar enjoys playing DOTA2 and Apex Legends as well and she wants to become “a professional streamer someday like one of the best streamers of the particular regions.”
